Vocal Coach REACTION & ANALYSIS 🎧 Morissette 🎙️ Someone Like You (LIVE) 🎶

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In Dr Dan's recent video, he provides an insightful vocal analysis of Morissette's performance of the music theatre piece "Someone Like You" from Jekyll and Hyde. He praises her for her ability to provide learning opportunities through her approach to vocal track shaping, connection with lyrics, and breath management. Dr Dan also discusses how Morissette navigates the complexities of shifting from a full-bodied belt to a lighter, clean tone, describing the technique as highly skilled and well-executed.
Noting that the recording takes place in a home studio during quarantine, he emphasises that the quality of her performance remains magical despite the less-than-optimal recording environment. The video serves as part of Dr Dan's Voice Essentials channel, aimed at fostering a community focused on learning to sing.

⚠️ As a singing voice specialist, I fully acknowledge that each live performance is a snapshot in time and does not encapsulate the entire spectrum of an artist's work, nor can it predict their future evolution. I understand that a myriad of factors, both positive and negative, can influence the delivery of a live performance. I strive to appreciate and critique each live rendition for its own merits, independent of the artist's past or potential future performances. Recognising the ebb and flow of live music, I value its spontaneity, novelty, and individuality and strive to give it the thoughtful consideration it deserves.

I love Morissette's performance of this song. I've had the good fortune to hear Linda Eder in concert perform this song and Morissette doesn't pale in comparison (I believe Linda would be considered the original artist). Mori can simply "Slay" any genre she chooses. Primarily, her "connection" to the music is unmatched.

Her voice is so unique and so mesmerisingly beautiful. I love the way she can use her instrument for any occasion and any genre. From watching these beautiful broadway musicals performances you wouldn’t think she could switch her voice and knock out songs from Rock Genre to Pop Music. Her technique and control is probably one of the best I have seen. The resonance she produces in this piece was just lovely … so beautiful. She’s just AMAZING! Thanks for coming back for another great analysis of Morissette. 👏👏👏👍❤️🇦🇺

I wish that were true, that everyone in the Philippines loved Morissette. The truth is, I have been in some debates with other filipino people who don't think much of Morissette. I figure it comes down to personal taste, but why some of them don't appreciate her talent, I can't understand. I'm definitely a Morissette fan and forever will be. Personal preference is definitely a factor, but "crab mentality" is a legit thing for Filipinos and it absolutely is an issue when it comes to respect. Not everyone needs to love a specific singer, but when it's a singer of Morissette's caliber, there's no denying her talent. And yet I have seen a number of Filipino fans of other singers try to put her down to boost their own favorite, even going as far as to say she sucks and isn't very good. It's a huge bummer and a bad look on their part. There are renowned singers that I dislike, but I can at least appreciate their talent while recognizing they're not my cup of tea.

@@shoots8598 I can't tell you how many times I've interacted with Filipino fans who think the only things that matter in singing are superlatives - the most power, the highest note, etc. As though singing is some sort of glorified karaoke contest instead of a marriage of artistry and technique rooted in well-established pedagogy.

Thank you for loving Morissette. It's a sad reality that she doesn't have the recognition she deserves. Look at her YT channel, with only less than half a million subscribers, in a country with a population of more than 109 million. Perhaps one of the reasons is that there are so many talented singers in the Philippines, and many of them are many years ahead of Mori in the industry, so the fandoms are widely spread and divided among these many artists, and each fandom tends to be loyal to their favorite artist, that they will attack, bash, even hate, anyone who's seen as a threat to the popularity of their idol. And Mori is a real threat to them, that's why she has many "haters and bashers".☹️

Another Great review Dan, Thanks again! her speaking before this piece and saying that is isn't her lane specifically, but how she would use many Broadway pieces to warm up her voice, Imagine using Broadway song's to "warm up". Morissette is a vocal tactician and as you said, present's us with a "Masterclass" in so many ways it seems every time she performs, truly a testament to her innate ability to just know what exactly what to do and when exactly to deliver her vocal's in ways people never forget. I wish your statement was true, that "The entire homeland loves her". seems she is not as loved as she should be there, sadly, a quick look at the numbers tells the sad truth. many times her fanbase is widely "Global" and not so much local. I do believe she is smart enough to know this and will overcome the divide, somehow. I remember when this was released and when watching closely, I noticed as you mentioned the way she uses her mouth, jaw, lips and eyes to shape the emotions she is conveying with every delivery, I was also actually quite shocked to notice her tongue, if you watch her tongue closely, many times she "twists and contorts" it around in a fashion I had never seen before in any singer, which was just astounding to me, that she could and would do that and still be able to make the sounds, and hit the notes so pitch perfectly that even a Strobophotograph meter wouldn't budge. really incredible to see. More of her here please Thanks again.

You need to review Linda's version of Man From LaMancha--just WOW! I have heard Linda sing live and without autotune-she is impressive with her vocal range and ability. I think she is as good as Streisand, maybe even better. Morissette does this song justice and I would not expect less--beautifully done. EDIT: This song & the entire Jekyll & Hyde musical was written for Linda.

Great analysis! I love your attention to details that are so informative. What an amazing performance. I really enjoyed seeing her in the at home setting too.

It’s so cute how much you love her voice! 😂 This is the third one I’ve watched now and it’s one of my all time favourite MT songs. What an incredible talent! She shows us English speaking singers how to shape every vowel and use the articulators to perfection!! 🤌🏼 Divine!

this is why!! Morisette is the best there is!! can So Hyang do this?! perhaps! but not quite 😎😎 don't get me wrong! So is magnificent in her own right but she just lack that emotion/feeling that Mori is a master of, you just don't need lyrics when Mori sings
