Kate was singing as the ghost of Catherine Earnshaw and deliberately pitched her voice at an 'ethereal' level. She had a very full range at this age - three full octaves at least.

@@harr77 Actually have to say you are very wrong on this actually. There are several old interviews with everyone from Kate to the band and production team and its pretty consistent, the character in the story being represented by the vocal choices was very important in this song.

Remember hearing a very early interview with Kate she said she never liked the sound of her own voice but acknowledged the fact that she could sing perfectly in tune, naturally. I was one of the very lucky few to see her live in London on her first (and only) tour in 1976. For me, the highlights of the evening were 'The Warm Room' and 'Oh England, my Lionheart' where it was just Kate and her piano without the band. Words would not be adequate for how incredible she sounded, it actually brought tears to your eye's.

The ghost is described as a child and a waif so its voice would be high. "As it spoke, I discerned, obscurely, a child’s face looking through the window. Terror made me cruel; and, finding it useless to attempt shaking the creature off, I pulled its wrist on to the broken pane, and rubbed it to and fro till the blood ran down and soaked the bedclothes: still it wailed, “Let me in!” and maintained its tenacious gripe, almost maddening me with fear." The full passage is below. The hook was soldered into the staple: a circumstance observed by me when awake, but forgotten. “I must stop it, nevertheless!” I muttered, knocking my knuckles through the glass, and stretching an arm out to seize the importunate branch; instead of which, my fingers closed on the fingers of a little, ice-cold hand! The intense horror of nightmare came over me: I tried to draw back my arm, but the hand clung to it, and a most melancholy voice sobbed, “Let me in-let me in!” “Who are you?” I asked, struggling, meanwhile, to disengage myself. “Catherine Linton,” it replied, shiveringly (why did I think of Linton? I had read Earnshaw twenty times for Linton)-“I’m come home: I’d lost my way on the moor!” As it spoke, I discerned, obscurely, a child’s face looking through the window. Terror made me cruel; and, finding it useless to attempt shaking the creature off, I pulled its wrist on to the broken pane, and rubbed it to and fro till the blood ran down and soaked the bedclothes: still it wailed, “Let me in!” and maintained its tenacious gripe, almost maddening me with fear. “How can I!” I said at length. “Let me go, if you want me to let you in!” The fingers relaxed, I snatched mine through the hole, hurriedly piled the books up in a pyramid against it, and stopped my ears to exclude the lamentable prayer. I seemed to keep them closed above a quarter of an hour; yet, the instant I listened again, there was the doleful cry moaning on! “Begone!” I shouted. “I’ll never let you in, not if you beg for twenty years.” “It is twenty years,” mourned the voice: “twenty years. I’ve been a waif for twenty years!” Thereat began a feeble scratching outside, and the pile of books moved as if thrust forward. I tried to jump up; but could not stir a limb; and so yelled aloud, in a frenzy of fright.

The 'vocal coach' seems to underestimate the power of Kate's voice, and is overlooking that she's singing the part of the ghost of Cathy from the novel. A young female ghost (Cathy was very young when she died in childbirth) would probably have a high-pitched ethereal voice.

Thing is cutting through any technical aspects of her voice she may or not have used what comes through is her the tonality/timbre/sound of her voice and her emotion. Not heard any person sing this song as a cover who sounds anything like Kate Bush. It is very vocally unique.

I give up on trying to sing it with my flat, boring, non-technical voice, I'll just watch her singing and will feed my soul with every flavoured note she sings in an angelic/ghostly way! Brilliant, effortless, theatrical, multitalented.

She is amazing! I've sung this song many times. It's in A maj. She has a little tremolo in her voice in the live version, but I don't think this is a signnof instability. I think this is her unique style. Like you said, she is at the beginning of her career here. She would go on to produce incredible work and her voice has matured so beautifully. Thank you for this Freya 😚

Thank you for analyzing Kate Bush, one of my favorite singers. 30 years ago, I was listening to a German radio show in which a voice specialist was analyzing various pop singers. He said Kate Bush's larynx stopped growing at some point. It's a so-called mutation disorder. It would be interesting to analyze Jon Anderson (owner of a lonely heart). I guess he is another person with that kind of mutation disorder. What do you think?

I’ve always been in love with this song and always been singing it thinking it was easy to sing, I used to sing it under the shower, while driving, whenever it came to my mind honestly. I’ve never thought it could be hard to sing till I sang it in front of my mom who studied singing and she stared at my with her mouth open. She told me I sounded exactly like Kate and that it’s one of the most difficult songs to sing. She also reminded me that when I was like 12 or so we went to the theatre and attended Puccini’s Madama Butterlfly in Torre del Lago (where we used to live at that time), the opera singer we met after the event gave me her phone number in order to call her if I ever wanted to start studying opera singing because she said I have the perfect voice for opera singing 🙈

She has a hyper feminine appearance with the hair and the dancing and the facial expressions, and the voice follows suit with the high and bright (girlish) sound. There is a seductive aspect to this but time marches on as they say, so as an older woman, she has taken this "style" and turned it into some kind of pseudo spiritual persona.
