Vocal Coach 1st Reaction to LEA SALONGA - 'On My Own' (Les Miserables 10th Anniversary)

Ойын-сауық

In this video, I react for the first time to Lea Salonga performing 'On My Own' from the musical 'Les Miserables'. In this video, I analyse her amazing performance, explain and demonstrate her vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great.
This is a masterful performance that took place at the Les Miserables 10th Anniversary concert, buy a real life Disney princess.

What I love about Lea is her tone. She's the only one who sang this song who's not shrill. Her voice sits perfectly in the key. The others sound like the key is a bit too high or a bit too low for them.

This is my favourite Les Mis song, and this is my favourite performance of the song. This is the performance I have always measured other performances by, and needless to say I have never found one that I prefer. If i had just one criticism of Lea Salonga's performance, it is that I could never understand how Marius could be so stupid as to not fall in love with Eponine. I mean seriously, I cannot see the pain in those eyes at the end without shedding a tear and wanting to give her a big hug.

If someone ever produced an illustrated dictionary of music, this performance would be inserted as the illustration in the margin next to the definition of "musical theater." It is simply everything that musical theater could possibly be. It is, as the Fairy Voice Mother describes it, continuous perfection. And, Lolli gives this a fresh polish with her brilliant analysis. I am not a student of voice, but I was greatly enlightened without being inundated with minutia of vocal mechanics. Lea Salonga stands alone, but Lolli's review gives full justice to this utterly perfect performance. Well done!

Lea is an amazing singer but Lolli, you are an equally amazing analyst! Your ability to breakdown the mechanics of her vocal production is truly jaw dropping. I am in awe of your talent. Apart from Lolli's analysis which is great it's so personable & darn fun with the voice comedy effects. Then I saw laid back Lilli clip. God so loveable & some of us going through tough times appreciate that comedy Lolli while getting to switch off our own concerns to the singers & music. Lea is just calm and in control. Wehay on "Piggy Lion" look but really communicates the positioning. You can tell Lolli has theatre understanding. Thank you Lolli. I can imagine you being a wonderful hypnotherapist with comedy to crack open clients in emotional pain to laugh & then transform because in laughter you cannot hold trauma for that moment. Sorry for my fan boying 😂. What a way Lea finished the song so gently

Lea has been performing in her home country of the Philippines since she was 7 years old. (She was born in 1971.) Lea did theater, albums, concerts, film and TV as a child and teenager before she was discovered for MISS SAIGON at age 17. Lea originated the lead role in MISS SAIGON at age 18 in the West End, age 20 on Broadway, and won every major theater award in both countries for her portrayals. You already mentioned that Lea is the singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan. Lea was the first Asian/non-Caucasian to play Eponine on Broadway (in 1993) and then was part of this 10th anniversary concert in 1995. Lea went into the LES MISERABLES Broadway revival in 2007 as Fantine and then played Fantine at the 25th anniversary concert in 2010. Lea is one of only 2 actors to play roles in both the 10th and 25th anniversary LES MIZ concerts (the other was Jenny Galloway), but the only one to play two different roles. I love that people with no vocal training can just watch this performance and love it, but people with vocal training have an even greater appreciation of Lea's talent. Thank you for appreciating Lea's acting in addition to her amazing singing. I really hope you'll check out more of Lea's performances. So many wonderful ones! Just a couple off the top of my head: Lea Salonga rehearsing "I'm Still Hurting", Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "The Movie In My Mind" at MISS SAIGON 25th anniversary concert, Lea and Regine Velasquez sing a musical medley, Lea and Michael Ball singing "A Little Fall of Rain" from LES MIZ 10th anniversary concert. P.S. Her name is pronounced LAY-ah.

Thank you for selecting this performance. Lea is the gold standard for all that play Éponine. She is the queen of musical theatre diction and I appreciate the restraint she uses in the final big notes. (Too many others belt the crap out of them.) Honestly, you could review the entire 10th anniversary show as a special live stream event. It's just that good. But I would suggest Colm Wilkinson - my favorite Valjean - singing "Bring Him Home" during the same concert.

You're absolutely right about getting the "permission to relax" once you've heard someone singing on pitch for a bit. I also experience this when listening to instrumental music. Excellent and wonderful critique, pinpointing exactly why Lea Salonga is one of the greats of musical theater. She has done a few duets with fellow Philippino Arnel Pineda, who is now the lead singer for Journey. If you haven't heard him, he's a vocal mimic of Steve Perry, but can do several other vocal mimicries. I think that would be interesting to see, given how in this video you noted that a person's mouth, larynx, etc. dictate a signature sound. And on the musical theater train, Ramin Karmiloo's voice is truly unmatched and I may just spend the rest of the evening going down the youtube rabbit hole on him.

Many other people have mentioned Regine Velasquez, so how about Regine and Lea's musical medley? It's pretty fantastic. I'm a huge fan of Lea and her solo performances, but also a lot of her duets. I'd also recommend (in no particular order): Lea and Michael Ball singing "A Little Fall of Rain", Lea rehearsing "I'm Still Hurting" from THE LAST FIVE YEARS, Lea singing "It's Quiet Uptown" at her concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 2022, Lea and Josh Groban singing "All I Ask of You" and "The Prayer" at his concert in Manila 2019 (there's a vid of both songs plus their banter together on stage before and in-between songs), Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "The Movie In My Mind" at the MISS SAIGON 25th Anniversary Concert in 2014, Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "I Know Him So Well" at the London Palladium.

Bought myself a couple of orchestra seat tix & a DVD of the 10th Anniversary performance & have fallen in love with Les Mix & even got to see her when she appeared about 18 years ago at a casino in northern Calif. This song, this performance in particular always has me in tears. Great analysis Lolli. I'd love to see you do a comparison between this one and Samantha Barks in the movie. Both amazing. ❤

I have watched this before, but you just blew me away...again! You are an expert and know expertise, and Lea is among the very best of the best. She is the epitome of perfection. It's not an act. It's the result of natural talent, experience from childhood, training, and lots of hard work. She has a super work ethic. On top of that, she maintains this wonderfully beautiful character. She's a genuinely good person with high ethics. Her heart is in the right place for the oppressed and underprivileged, and she doesn't hide it. One never goes wrong with her. Keep up the good work. I learn so much from you.

How is it that I can learn to be more generally observant, by listening to you deconstruct and give your insight into other people moving their gob? It is truly, and genuinely insightful.

I very much recommend you check out the 25th anniversary concert too. Among reasons, Lea’s performance this time as ‘Fantine’ and the spectacular finale featuring cast members both from the 1985 original production and the cast members from other countries productions doing a multilingual “Do You Hear The People Sing” …. Spectacular!
