On My Own (Lea Salonga) | Vocal Coach Reacts
Музыка
Lea Salonga was the first actress of Asian descent to play the roles of Éponine and Fantine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway...so she's kind of a living legend. In this video we break down her legendary performance of Eponine in the 10th anniversary concert of Les Miserables.

Nick Higgs The Singer 2024

She mentioned in one interview that although it wasnt a lead role ( comepared to Kim of Miss Saigon), she worked harder in playing Eponine because it's historically a "caucasian" role and getting that part is like banging your head on the wall repeatedly until it cracks open.
She has fantastic mouth movement and diction. I always appreciate a singer who can also act while singing a song. It's so much more believable and pulls you into the feeling of the song to evoke emotions. She is a true artist, very rounded.

I must admit during my first viewing of Le Mis' I was not expecting to like it as musicals are not my thing, but now this one is my absolute fav concert/musical,Lea is outstanding and she is easily my favorite vocalist in the show, does not go out of character at all and, for me,her voice is out of this world.

It is such a great musical and Lea is incredible!
This performance by Lea Salonga always brings me to tears. The emotion in her performance and her voice.
When I saw this show for the first time I didn't know a single song. I reacted to every song as you are doing here...I cried, and fell in love ....for me it is the perfect musical....and no-one sings this particular song as well as Lea... brilliant.
But have you truly cried if you haven't seen Lea and Michael Ball doing A Little Fall of Rain? 🥲
I've been a fan of Lea's forever. Thanks for reacting and commenting on this magnificent performance. Please react to more Lea performances! Just a few of my favorite Lea performances (I have tons): --Lea and Michael Ball singing "A Little Fall of Rain" from the LES MISERABLES 10th Anniversary concert (1995) --Lea singing "Via Dolorosa" with the US Military Academy Cadet Glee Club of West Point (on an album released in 2005) --Lea and Josh Groban singing "The Prayer" at his concert in Manila (February 2019) --Lea rehearsing "I'm Still Hurting" (I'm pretty sure it was a concert from January 2013) --Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "The Movie in My Mind" from the MISS SAIGON 25th Anniversary concert (2014),

OMG I cry all the time when i watch that scene
Great reaction, Nick. Love, love your technical and emotional analysis of this great performance. Good job.
I loved this review. I'm a fan of the Samantha Barks version. I love her voice and her use of limited vibrato (compared to many other singers) but like you pointed out about her motions and expressions, Lea really makes you think she's IS the character.
Lea is so amazing, nothing she does ever surprises me. But I have seen this performance several times and it still gets me every time. I don't think there is anyone on Broadway who sings better or more character-wrapped.
I love Lea! And i love your reaction! Very educational/informative. I’m sharing this video to my daughter, so she can learn the techniques you mentioned (she’s learning how to sing properly - technique, etc.). Thank you for reacting to Lea’s performance, as well as for sharing your knowledge. Bless you!
I love that you break the performance into pieces, and sort of "dumb it down" a bit so those of us who didn't grow up in musical theater can better understand. You really know what you're talking about so bravo to you! And brava to OUR Lea Salonga! Love from the Philippines!❤
never breaks character as soon as she stood up and walk up to the mic. aside from the musical perfection, you literally can feel the character's hopes and despair as she sings Eponine's heart out.
"A world that's full of happiness that I have never known". When Lea sings the lyric of known here it is one of the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. She is great in the whole song. I first heard this song in 2003 and wish I would have heard sooner. Better yet would have been to here it live. I am full of happiness every time I hear her sing.
Yes, yes, I agree with you every single word! I'm from China and I still remember the first time when I heard this song by Lea Salonga, it was when I was 17 years old. I bought a DVD of this 10 years anniversary version of Les Miserable and I fell in love with this musical instantly. Back then, my English was terrible but it doesn't affect me understanding the plot, the character's feeling through Lea's performance. Her version of this song is THE BEST of all time in my world! Also, it's very difficult for a non-native speak to pronounce so clearly, let along it's a musical performance. I know that later on she also played the character Fantine in this musical, but I still think this role Éponine fits her the most. I'm so glad to find your video. Absolutely love it! Thank you so much!
Amazing review. I love Lea. I saw Miss Saigon in London in the 90s with her as the lead. Phenomenal doesn’t even categorize her vocal abilities.
good on you for correcting her name pronunciation with text overlay!

oHh I cried again, for me, she is the best Eponine! A legend and icon, the only one who sang two singing voices for Disney and for her role in Miss Saigon, the only Filipina, Asian or a person of color to have received best performances in Olivier and Tony awards. And then I learned new things and tips again in singing (pls make no mistake, am just a singer in my home, for the love of music hahaha). It' okay to cut the music video review from time to time when you see something worth sharing because that is educational, besides, I am so enchanted and disarmed by your gorgeous face and knowledge of music, spontaneity, sincerity, humility and honesty to share your talent, you are just lovable, how can i not fall for you.. hahaha stay safe, sweet and charming,

Appreciate how much you love this phenomenal performance... several months ago, I watched another reaction, from a Broadway singer, who complained that this is such a 'old-fashioned' way of singing that wouldn't work on today's stages, that it should be belted out. Nah... perfect technique, emotion, acting? I'll take that any time. Thank you for this.

I commented this in the actual video (or one of them). I'm glad that when she sings "...a world that's full of happiness that I have never known...", she doesn't SCREECH the word "known" like so many other performers do. She makes it powerful and strong without having to sound like a banshee. It just sounds so horrible and ruins the song when they scream that word like that. This particular performance of Salonga's in the 10th Anniversary concert is my favorite version of this song. Edit: The performances on this 10th anniversary concert -- SO much better than that god-awful movie.
