Vocal ANALYSIS of System Of A Down's "Lonely Day". Time for Daron to shine!

I've been on a System of a Down kick lately, truly loving the messaging and technical prowess they bring to the music they create. More than that, every song seems vastly different, which piques my curiosity even more. So hearing that "Lonely Day" features Daron as lead vocals has me so excited, I just had to jump in right away!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to System of a Down performing "Lonely Day" for the first time.

"Hypnotize" is the logical next SOAD song to take a look at. Daron and Serj share the vocal load pretty evenly and the way they alternate singing their individual parts feels almost like they're having a conversation.

Essentially, "the loneliest day of your life" is the day after you lose a loved one. You just feel a hole in you and feel so alone. You start thinking you can't go on and that you should have died, etc. and the whole world is burning down around you, but nobody else notices because it's a personal trauma and pain you are working through. So while everything is on fire, nobody cares, but you. Also, System of a Down is another band that sets itself apart from other metal bands because they're very unique. There's an art to even their hardest and heaviest songs.

i discovered SOAD as a kid and just thought they were cool, but the older I get the more I appreciate the absolute stellar musicianship of this band, As a kid, you do not think about stuff like harmonizing vocal lines or guitar lines and that sort of thing, now, when you are older and know better how music works, you finally begin to appreciate what they are able to pull off. not a lot of bands can do that. SOAD are or rather were really something special.

Same here. That also goes for Deftones, Porcupine Tree and a few more. It's interesting how some bands back then created their own identity, which is ofc common in many bands, but to the point of making up a new unheard sonority and composition structure is quite something to be proud of. I feel we've reached an era where there are still many interesting bands mixing genres and styles, but not really coming up with something radically unique within the rock genre - and I'm not a mainstream man myself.

Darons performance, accompanied with the guitar, really cut through in such a beautiful harmony that it gets me to tear up and genuinely feel out my emotions. Fun fact: That siren-like sound at 16:07 is actually a running theme throughout Mesmerize/Hypnotize, since its a double album. In Mezmerize, that siren is heard right after Soldier Side (intro) ends, which seamlessly transistions into BYOB! In Hypnotize, Lonely Day ends with that, which also transistions into one of my personal favorites Soldier Side. This effectively bookends the album and its one of their most powerful songs thanks to Serj and Daron's haunting harmonies and lyrics. Thank you for covering this as always! Hope you'll check out Soldier Side someday, cheers.

A loneliness not only from having lost someone, but also of being disconnected from the people around you. And because you treat us so well by listening to the songs we suggest, I'll never stop suggesting Serj Tankian's debut performance of Gate 21 with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, kicking off his Elect The Dead Symphony tour, partly because it's a beautiful song, and partly because I was there and it was bloody awesome ;) (and while we're at it, have a listen to Sugar to see why the band was labelled 'heavy mental' when they burst onto the scene)

For those who aren't familiar with the full layout of their last two albums, Mesmerize & Hypnotize, that last sound in the song of the guitar fading out is a callback to the beginning of Mesmerize, with a little song called Soldier Side (Intro), the opening track. Here on Hypnotize, Lonely Day is the next to last song, and the callback reminds listeners of that little opening track from the other album, prior to the final track here, which is a reprise (Full Version) of Soldier Side. It's a really beautiful symmetry to tie both albums together. Although they were released six months apart, they are considered a Double Album. The band even issued double album packaging when Mesmerize was released, with an incomplete case with snap-on apparatus, so that when Hypnotize came out later, the two cases could be snapped together.

lol dude, daron is the main mind of soad by far, he wrote the lyrics and lines of almost every song from the band, and the mesmerize/hypnotize increase of daron's vocals is due to the fact he wished more space in the "lights". I remember, back in time, that this fact is what generated the conflicts that lead to the band's end; he even gave an interview where he said he wrote and created practically everything and he wanted more participation in his creation. If daron wasnt that important, the other 3 would just hire another guitarrist. And that is not what happend.

Another Forest fan here. I've actually first listened to the band by taking a 25hits type compilation CD from my school friend. It didn't have Forest on it, so when I've finally purchased their first three albums, my first thought on hearing it was "this is their most SOAD song". I don't know why, but for me it was just the quintessence of their pre Mesmerize/Hypnotize sound.

The siren at the end is met to transition into Soldier Side (the last song on the Hypnotize Album). Listening to "Lonely Day" and "Soldier Side" together builds the story. I honestly think the songs from the Hypnotize Album are the biggest in story telling for SOAD. It is like Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall or TOOLs Laterlaus, the album should be played from Beginning to end without break. Every song strings into each other to build a larger picture. Plus "Holy Mountains" is a great song talking about the Armenia heritage but mainly the Armenia genocide

This song is about the loss of a loved one. I saw SOAD 5 times in my life (earliest one in 1998, latest in 2017). My mother passed away in 2010, and during the latest SOAD concert I attended, they played this song. I was taken by surprise when they played it, and I didn't manage to hold back my tears. Witnessing them performing this song was so moving. It was really cathartic, even if my mother's passing happened 7 years before that moment, it all came back to me, but among the pain, sweet memories of her also popped in my head while listening to this song. The atmosphere of this song is on point, it really transcribes well what you feel at that moment in your life in my opinion. Thank you for reacting to it, and thank you to SOAD for helping people in those kind of moments with such beautiful songs.

He hits some notes that he only does on a few songs, and there is this crazy scale down he does at the end of the song. I literally listened to this song over and over trying to mimick the way he defies laws of vocals with this supporting vocal to Serj starting high and going low. You have to listen to it to understand. It took me FOREVER to get it right. Although I do not think there is an actual music video for it.

1:38 I actually had to pull up the tabs for both songs, and you were basically spot on. The chord progressions are exactly the same, and in fact, the riffs are nearly identical. They're both in 6/8 time, though SOAD used Drop C tuning, as opposed to the Animals, who used E Standard tuning, and the other difference in the riffs is that the riff for "Lonely Day" uses one less fretted note than House Of The Rising Sun. (6 fretted notes in the riffs of Lonely Day, 7 Fretted notes for House Of The Rising Sun)

Really think you’d enjoy the 2015 live concert SOAD did in Armenia! I found they leaned more into their Armenian influences during their performance and it’s just one of the coolest recorded shows I’ve seen.

I always love when you do a SOAD song. Great things combined and a perfect way to start the weekend.😊 A song I recently stumbled over again that I can really recommend you listen to is Nina Hagen's cover of Rammstein's Seemann that she did together with Apocalyptica. Low female vocals, Rammstein and electric cellos. what's not to love? 😆

I have never noticed the similarities in the intro to house of the rising sun but you are spot on! I love it

I'm so happy you picked a song with a Daron lead. I always felt that SoaD has two lead singers, both very unique. Another song from them with him taking a spotlight, but having amazing background vocals from Serj, and great harmonies between them is Lost in Hollywood. I would love to hear you react to that. From other bands, I'd really appreciate Bat Country from Avenged Sevenfold or anything Guns N' Roses.

Can't wait until you do B.Y.O.B. by them, song is a banger and definitely a different version of them from what you've heard. The video on that one is great too.
