Vocal ANALYSIS of Scott Weiland's Wails in Stone Temple Pilot's "Interstate Love Song"

This song is all about a broken promise to Scott Weiland's fiance as his heroin addiction persisted while recording Stone Temple Pilot's second album "Purple". It's fascinating to watch the music video and see the correlation between the silent film actor and the growing nose, and Scott's story. Let's take another dive into one of STP's most famous songs!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Stone Temple Pilots perfoirming "Interstate Love Song" for the first time.

Scott Weiland was a incredible singer. The progression of his voice from album to album was mind blowing. STP was over looked by critics cause they believed Weiland sounded like Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. I think they were deaf. Huge fan of STP and Velvet Revolver.

That musical hook you're hearing is the sheer brilliance of their bassist and principal songwriter Robert DeLeo. If you listen close to the bass you can hear these melodies and polyrhythms underneath everything driving everything forward. Scott was the cherry on top of this insanely talented group, if you're looking for more of how he can go from delicate to powerful check out the songs "Days of the Week" "Big Empty" and "Dead and Bloated". He had such a range of emotions and sounds that almost no two songs even sound like the same singer.

Stone Temple Pilots is so sad and so wonderful at the same time. So much talent, so well done and yet so self destructive. Its the story of all the Grunge bands, they were so amazing and talented and so awfully suicidal in their lifestyle. I’ve been listening to this song for 30 years, and as a composer who has written classical, jazz and alternative, I have to say that this is one of the best songs ever written. The melodies are exceptional throughout, the chord structures are extremely complex and as you stated, the changing time signatures make the song even more compelling. But what makes this song almost unequalled is something you said: oh no, it can’t be over, it’s too short. I swear on my life that I have heard at least five people literally say those words out loud over the years. Generations of people. Back in 92 I remember people saying that, and everyone around them nods in agreement. This is a 4 minute song that people from different times, different generations and different backgrounds can’t get enough of and universally want more of. What more can music be? That’s what makes it one of the best songs of all time

I REALLY wish I had no anxiety, because when I perform this song alone I can sound almost 𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 to Scott here. Am I as good as him? Not even close. I'm Self-taught. But I think this song specifically works very well with my natural range. I don't need to strain to hit any notes, I get the same natural grit, it just.... Sounds like him. There are only SLIGHT differences that I can't explain. But I couldn't ever seek lessons because I'm so scared to sing in front of other people, it's one of the most disappointing things about myself because objectively, I know I'm really good. But without being able to really show anyone, I don't know HOW good I am, where I fall short, what I need to Improve, etc....

If you're looking to reiew more grunge after you're back from leave, I can't recommend Alice in Chains' "Rooster" enough. I'd definitely suggest checking out the music video. In addition to using the studio version of the song (which I prefer to the live version), the video itself is also *very* well done. It's a song guitarist/backing vocalist Jerry Cantrell wrote about his father's experience in Vietnam and hits pretty hard.

I mean they never really set out to be grunge in the first place. But those days that's how bands got marketers if they wanted to be successful. Other non-grubge bands that sort of got looped into that were Live and Collective Soul, and then people were so mad when they didn't behave like grunge bands and make grunge music, which happened to STP to a degree as well.

STP were dismissed as "fifth-rate Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains wannabes" when they first came out and Scott was particularly maligned for his ever-evolving vocal style - accused of trying to sound just like Eddie Vedder, Kurt Cobain, or whoever else at different times but that was the beauty of Scott's talent. He was constantly following his muse to some new exploratory place. They were always my favorite band of the grunge era - in large part because they didn't stick to that one monolithic grunge sound.

I know this is from another industry, but Chef Marco Pierre White, the youngest chef to earn 3 Michelin stars and later returned it, said it best..."I was being judged by people who had less knowledge than me, so what was it truly worth? I gave Michelin inspectors too much respect, and I belittled myself." I think it absolutely applies to so called music critics. Critics put themselves in such a social hightower, they're truly out of touch.

They got bashed mostly for Core... for sounding like other bands... Plush was Pearl Jam, Sex Type Thing was Alice in Chains, etc. Riki Rachtman even took a shot at them on Headbanger's Ball when asked who he thought they sounded like and he said "Who don't they sound like?". He later, after listening to Purple, said that they didn't sound like anyone else on that album and it was really good.

So many really great songs, but this one remains my favorite. The groove is infectious, and SW's voice was so wonderful. Gravelly warmth and...I don't know. It's just awesome. The song is still a windows-down-car-concert song even now. He's very much missed.

Scott Weiland and Stone Temple Pilots are both underrated. And there’s nothing better than 90’s music videos. I always assumed they purposefully ended songs like these early and often without resolve to leave you wanting more, which in turn causes you to buy the album so you can listen to it again and again since streaming and downloads weren’t a thing.

Wow !! Loved your enthusiasm, facial expressions and analysis. Too funny how you did not want the song to end. Great stuff. While I am ignorant on the technical details and genetic mentions you describe in Weilands voice, I just know he is special. One of the best. Thank you for doing this !!

I love that you come to the same conclusion as everyone... The only thing wrong with this song is that it's too damn short!

Gosh I love the catch to the change for common time to a 1-2 and back to common time. The attention to detail you have is incredible. Now when I hear this song I can't unhear that shift in time signatures

Love your channel. I was surprised though to see you analyzing the studio version of this song when there are so many live versions. I heard your comments about the story, and the music interplay, and I agree wholeheartedly. I just really like it when you do the live versions of songs because you can analyze the "more raw" content vs. the mixology of the engineers.

Scott was crazy versatile. He had a Bowie-like ability to switch up his style to the point where his vocals are hardly recognizable as him.

@@jordan-xe2yb I disagree. Both were incredible in their own right, and it'd be unfair to sell Bowie short.

Gravel and silk-- this is how I have always characterized Weiland's voice. I think it would be amazing to hear you cover some of the women of the grunge movement! The Breeders, L7, Veruca Salt, and so on. "Cannonball" by the Breeders and "Pretend We're Dead" by L7 were two of my anthems as I graduated high school in '96.

I'm glad that you're sticking with STP. This is another of their big hits - and they truly had some wonderful big hit songs - but I do really hope you do some album dives to the stuff that didn't make the radio (like "And So I Know", "Atlanta", "Adhesive Love", and "Glide"). Such a range in sound over the years and even just within the same albums.

That's what I've grown to love about your videos. Some of these songs are ones that I grew up to and just enjoyed the song for the song. But now, decades later I get a deeper understanding to those same songs. Thank you for doing what you do, Elizabeth.

So nostalgic! This man was so simple and subtle in his musical abilities but yet it’s so complex and perfect for “grunge” this man is extremely missed in this genre

This era was such a refreshing time after a lot of the 80’s stuff that came out! Rock Hard on all this stuff! I’m very glad to have revived this stuff with my rediscovering vinyl! Especially since I now have the system of my dreams, that I didn’t at that time! Love your reactions and analysis @The Charismatic Voice
