Vocal ANALYSIS of my FAVORITE YOUTUBE VIDEO! Sara Bareilles singing "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"

Written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" as performed by Sara Bareilles is one of my all time favorite videos on KZread. It's written about, you guessed it, the yellow brick road in Wizard of Oz, and I'm here for that! Written about giving up a life of opulence for one of simplicity in a rural setting, this song hits all my feels, and Sara's performance gives me the chills.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Sara Bareilles perform one of her all time favorite songs "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".

I know, man. She's obviously extremely popular and successful and she still feels terribly underrated as if she's just some rando that had a couple catchy pop hits. This came into one of my randomized Spotify playlists about 6 months ago, and I listened to it about 50 times in a week. And not to mention she's playing the piano the whole time she's singing this. That's not easy at all. Trust me, I can sing badly and play piano badly, but when I tried this one, I had to choose which one I wanted to butcher. I couldn't do them both. And she did them both amazingly.

One of my favourite performances on KZread. Her piano accompaniment to her own vocal is impeccable. Elton John said this one of the best ever covers of any of his songs, and her delivery really makes us realise what a superbly poetic lyric Bernie Taupin wrote. Another eye-watering performance at the piano is her own song, She Used To Be Mine, performed live on the Graham Norton show.

Oh. My. God. So, I found you a few months ago, in a kinda backwards way. I had just been to a show that Sleep Token opened and I was immediately enamored. I fell down their rabbit hole, which led me to Will and his Hypnosis cover and that video led me to you. I have always felt like a freak for my reactions to music. My friends would look at me like a complete freak when we would be listening to something powerful, not even necessarily sad, and I would have tears streaming down my face. Took me a while to get to this video, because I’m a metal and rock fan first, but good music is good music, regardless of genre. She hit Road before the second chorus, and I was damn near sobbing. Then I look at you and you’re barely holding it in. That made me tear up more! Thank you for the comradery. Your channel is the most warm and refreshing thing I’ve experienced in a long time. Wondering if you would ever do Brandi Carlisle, she has such a great voice and unique. Awesome video can't wait to see more.

That is what music should do to people: touch them emotionally and overflow the senses. Sara is indeed amazing and this performance of this song double so. The audience is dead silent almost afraid to breathe. All your explanations are very interesting and helps me better listen to artists and will probably help me listen better to my own singing as well. For vocalize have you checked out The Manhattan Transfer ? They are a vocal jazz quartet that actually did a whole album of Jazz charts they added words to. Good stuff.

Sara Bareilles also does a remarkable cover of Coldplays Yellow, the instrumentation is minmal, its all about her voice. The way she sings it puts a very different emphasis on the song for me. The video on youtube seems to have a low framerate, but the sound is pretty good.

For Sara, I'd go with her live performances on Live From Here (a public radio show, but they've got videos on KZread). Someone Who Loves Me and Saint Honesty are particularly great. Also on that show (you'll thank me later) watch the videos with Rachael Price. One more with Sara. If you want to get absolute shivers down your spine, watch the Kennedy Center video of her singing "Once Upon Another Time". She sings a Capella... alone... for about half the song and you could literally hear a pin drop if one had been. This is a MUST listen, even if you don't react to it.

Lol, I think every Sara fan has requested the Ben Folds Kennedy Center performance. Duet of Leonard with Lily Collins of "Suzanne" I believe, is wondrous. Of course Cohen's entire live in London concert is magnificent. Leonard himself said he preferred KD Lang's Hallelujah of the many covers. She did it at the Vancouver Olympics and it was amazing, but some think her Junos performance was better. Toss up. The staging at the Olympics was epic though.

Thanks you Elizabeth for picking on of my favourite KZread performances. Sara Bareilles is one of the most talented musicians of her generation. She is obviously an amazing vocalist, but the emotion she relates whilst performing, sets her apart from most of the rest. She is also a gifted composer and a musician. I think it would be great if you feature her more on the channel and a good start to that could be any of the songs in the musical she wrote (Waitress) that even got her a Tony.
