Postmodern Jukebox feat. Haley Reinhart "Creep" REACTION & ANALYSIS by Vocal Coach/Opera Singer

Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Haley Reinhart featured with Postmodern Jukebox for the first time, covering "Creep" by Radiohead.

Another fun fact about this, is that Haley was hesitant to record this as she had been singing all the week and thought her voice was too tired, but was convinced to at least try one take, and the rest, as they say, is history....over 100 million views and counting...

#KevinDunham ... it’s so ironically funny that I read your comment just after I hung up with my wife telling her almost the exact same thing! I had a lot of musical schooling throughout my life since I was a small boy in my personal life, and all the way up through high school and jazz band on several different instruments including guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, violin/cello, dulcimer, brass instruments along with vocalization training music theory etc., but it’s been 30+ years since those days, and I have forgotten a lot of the terminology for some of those things that I learned back then. She reminds me of those exact same terminologies that I want to use, but as I said, have slipped my mind. You nailed it on the head though; in saying that SHE nails on the head what we are thinking! I think it's some sort of involuntary sympathetic vocal chords contractions or something. Probably singers feel it more intensely and can explain it better, but even I, who is not a singer, feel how my vocal chords tighten and relax with the music when I hear a really really good singer as if her singing touches me on a very physical level. It's actually can get a bit tiresome after awhile, but also very exciting a lot of the times, but only when listening to very good singers that I really like and feel.

Dec. 1, 2023.. I saw her last night in Senatobia Ms. at the Heindl Center for the Performing Arts. It is a small venue probably 300 people. Haley performed like we were at Madison Square Gardens. Her voice is magical and engaging, from holding ultra high bars to getting down with the gravely lows in that pure smokey and guttural way that she does. Scott Bradlee never gets enough love in these video reactions (glad you did). Picking the genre and then arranging it all (and performing - he's on the piano). Plus, he always picks the right talents for the song (not just the singers, but all of the musicians). From Haley, to Puddle Pity Party, to Morgan James to Gunhild Carling. I mean, he incorporates tap dancers into songs (not just the physical act, but the sound of the tap dancer, into the songs).

Maybe just because it's way nearer to my own life's experiences, but if you ever find the time maybe give a quick listen to Daniel Mustard's version of this song. He makes it his own in a way that only a person that experienced hardship could... Love your channel and really enjoy your expertise just as much as your emotional and honest approach of so many different songs. You're great, stay gold ;)
I love how you start falling in love with Haley in the first 10 seconds. We've all been there before :)
Your enthusiasm just makes these videos. For we, the unwashed masses, we don't often realize what goes into a vocal performance. You explain the nuances really well and help us appreciate them on whole other level.
God I love this channel, its like having a best friend who you share songs with who also loves all the same things about it that you do and its someone you can mutually get excited about the music with.

I so love seeing a knowledgeable woman fall in love with her singing.
Hasn't premiered yet, but the facial expression feels appropriate already.
Oh my my my. That sexy rasp gave me goosebumps. This lady's talented and well trained, levels higher than most. Now I am going on a search for her performances. Elizabeth, you have the best reactions because you express your insight with every fiber of your being, you truly feel the music and vocal, completely uninhibited.
It's 2024 and I'm still in love with this performance and also this review.
I love how she starts nerding out, absolutely loving it, just seconds in.
Haley was on American Idol during the early years- and should’ve won. Her rendition of Benny and the Jets is fantastic.

I don't know how it is in the US, but in I believe Sometimes that its better for good artists that they don't win Shows Like Idol. In Germany for example the winners are pressed to do the stuff that is the most Chart promising, not what they really can do or they let the most malleable Singer win. The Public votes , I dont think that this goes without some Manipulation. So they create a lot of one Hit Wonders, but without substance. Haley is one of the best singers I ever heard, but Jazz ist no mainstream music...These Shows are mainly about Money, not only talent
I just love how intense you feel the music/singer and how your face reacts to it! Great „entertainment“ + great music. Very enjoyable 👌🏼 thank you!
The amount of geeking out you're doing is exactly what I did. Had the pleasure of seeing her do this live in Austin, TX and it was every bit as amazing. Met her after too, and she's an absolute peach of a person.
Many have been calling her a real-life siren. I found it fitting how her legs lined up perfectly with the octopus.

I just love watching this Lady experience some of my favourite songs/covers and seemingly have that same internal shock, awe, breathlessness chills and giddyness I get when I see someone do something exceptionally well.
Enjoying watching someone else experiencing what cuts me to the core. This performance wrings me out like a loaded sponge. It really takes a lot out of me, l can't imagine how she must feel after this. Sometimes l feel like I'm the only person alive that feels music.
As the story goes, this rendition was done while on tour when they had a few hours off and rented a studio to try out some songs. This was the first and only take! A singular talent....
Her singing literally pulls tears out of my eyes. It's just fantastic.
I can't get enough of watching people react to Haley Reinhart, especially if they never heard of her before and get completely blown away. Every single time. But your reaction might be my favourite so far, you put it to words so well and most of all, your joyful expression says it all. Like she is close to bringing you to tears with her rendition.
I adore watching you. You're so expressive and I can see the true love of music you possess
I love how you reacted to this song. It's like unwrapping a gift only to find another gift. 🥰
Her next song "Black Hole Sun" should be your second react right after this one.... You'll be shocked at what she can pull.....

I can't BELIEVE you didn't even talk about the Modulation! Most singers find it extremely difficult to pop in with no musical reference and boldly change the key to a song in that manner! I was much more amazed by that than what garnered your immediate attention. Yes, this woman is freakin'' awesome in every way, one of the best I've ever heard!

That was the 2011 season of American Idol. Her version of "Blue" that year was incredible. I'd love to see Elizabeth review that one.
I've been in a deep depression/anxiety filled funk lately. I absolutely love love love Hayley's rendition of Creep (more than Radiohead's!), and watching your expressions as you reacted made me *feel* this track more than I usually do. For just a moment, and the first time in almost two years, I felt something other than depressed... And that's thanks to you.

I was watching you at the beginning and thinking "lady hold onto to your hat, cause you ain't seen nothing yet".
Fell in love with her voice when she sang House of the Rising Sun about 10 years ago. Gave me chills
Just found Haley this morning by accident and was BLOWN AWAY!! Watched a video with this singer covering Can't Help Falling in Love and was in AWE. But no credit on the video for the music. :( So I did some searching, you'd be surprised how many people have cover Can't Help Falling in Love, and found the one. Then did another search using her name and saw a vid of her doing this song at Naperville Ribfest.. Oh my GOD! Incredible voice and an amazing performer. BTW: Always love seeing your reactions to music. You get it the same way I do. :)
I love your reaction here...there's an unabashed/innocent way that you watch this vid...my problem with most reactors is that they are so aware and more often than not, checking themselves out as they're watching the vid that seems so icky and turns me off. Thanks for this because your reaction is why I'm into watching these kinda vids...I wanna relive that moment - live vicariously through a person who is enjoying something that floored me for the first time. Seeing the pleasure Haley's voice brought you made my day...thank you:)
Elizabeth, two of the greatest gifts to mankind is listening to Haley Reinhart's extraordinary performance of Creep and watching your wonderfully animated reaction while listening to it. Just watching you listen to great music is a joy to behold. Thank you. (P.S. Love your detailed analysis too.)
Your excitement is intoxicating... I can't stop watching!😆👍❤️
Haley's Version of "can't find my way home" is amazing. The live version at Napierville is so perfect it's hard to believe it wasn't done in a studio

What's incredible about this performance is the back story. She had already performed several songs, she was ill and she performed it in one take. She's a former American Idol contestant from 2001 who finished 3rd. Also, her mother and father are professional blues and jazz musicians who she performed with. She's the only American Idol contestant who performed in the finals with her father accompanying on guitar.
I did not expect to watch this entire video. This was captivating, both the voice and the reaction breakdown

Haley auditioned for American Idol season S9 and was rejected. The show initially stated her age during S10 as 18. (probably because they had old data from S9). She was actually 20 when the S10 live shows began.
She is awesome and so is PMJ! They did "Seven Nation Army" and it's superb. Edit: I love "my choice" Tuesday so we can see artists that dont have crazy following in reaction community but deserve to be seen more👍

But the real proof of her awesomeness are not the polished videos, as great as they are, but the impromptu club performance with Irvin Mayfield Jr. on the Idols tour, these minimalist Room 5 performances she later did with Casey; and even more so the after-party songs she sometimes did on the street. Raw cellphone recordings, untouched by any sound engineer, settings nearly everybody has experienced with some friends ... but compare the result. That makes musicians question their life choices.

I'm glad it's not just me. It's like she's experiencing something on an entirely new level. Slightly reminiscent of those videos of deaf people getting cochlear implants or color-blind people getting those glasses that let them see in color. Or a baby trying ice cream for the first time. The euphoric afterglow while your mind adjusts itself to make sense of overwhelming newness.
This lady can sing.. not just sing well but sings beautifully with a lot of techniques.. Still do not know how she did not win on American Idol.. but it never stopped her today. Check out Melody Cristea singing "Nothing" an original with Liliac (Lil-EEE-ack) or another original "Mars" live in concert.

I'm glad she didn't win. The winners usually get locked into a contract with the show. So, they cannot do their own thing until it ends. It usually hinders their careers. It's the 3rd to 5th place contestants that usually go on to become bigger, because they aren't locked into a contract.
Haley is incredible. I don't understand why she hasn't had more exposure. I could listen to her sing all day.
