Vitamin D, Deep sleep & Gut Bacteria w/ Dr. Stasha Gominak

Dr. Stasha Gominak discusses how vitamin D (from the sun) is needed to improve the stability of gut bacteria, which in turn help synthesize B vitamins necessary to facilitate deep sleep.

-------------------------------------Key Takeaways---------------------------------
0:00 Intro
02:29 Hundreds of Dr. Gominak’s patients, children, teenagers and young healthy females, didn’t have REM sleep.
04:42 Sleep apnea, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue were not recognized in the 1960s and 1970s, because they were not epidemic.
07:21 Vitamin D and the brain stem are major players in deep sleep.
10:03 You must be paralyzed in order to achieve the proper levels of sleep.
14:21 Why would an 8 year old have more than one sleep disorder?
16:02 There has been a major historical shift from living/working/playing outside.
17:07 Once you replace vitamin D, the body slowly changes from a vitamin D deficient body to a B deficient body.
18:08 While bears hibernate, their microbiome consumes the colonic mucus, which makes all of the B vitamins to meet the bear’s metabolic needs during hibernation. Does ours?
22:05 Why Did It Take 2 Years to Become B Deficient?
23:44 Each B vitamin has an intestinal bacterial source and a food source.
26:02 Wanted: Gut Bugs
31:39 You can fix your own bacteria with vitamin D levels above 40 and take B100 or B50 for 3 months.
32:58 The sodium linked multivitamin transport system pumps 3 vitamins, pantothenic acid, alpha lipoic acid and biotin, into our digestive system and our brain.
36:24 Dr. Gominak sees a correlation between autism and vitamin D deficiency.
38:27 The development of sexual dysmorphism and sleep.
42:34 When a child cannot get out of bed in the morning, this is may be the brain demanding that they go back to sleep to get REM.
44:03 A lack of REM sleep cheats a child of their normal development.
47:15 Children and adults normally make small subtle movements and tiny vocalizations, not talking, walking or falling out of bed.
48:27 Taking the Weston A. Price westernization theory to another level.
56:02 Breastfeeding enlarges nasal passages.
57:28 Dr. Gominak believes that vitamin D is trophic to the bacteria that we are supposed to have in our gut.
59:24 Pantothenic acid not only makes acetylcholine, it makes cortisol.
60:11 Acetylcholine is a chemical used by the vagus nerve.
01:07:46 A test result of pantothenic acid levels will parallel magnesium levels. It tells you what is in the blood, but not what is in the stores.
01:09:10 Perhaps we are completely self-healing with REM sleep.
01:12:26 Dr. Gominak’s Morning Routine
01:13:31 The ketogenic diet helps people to live longer. Being ketogenic during REM sleep helps us repair. We were probably designed to go into ketosis for at least 12 hours every night.
01:15:08 A new theory is that the tricarboxylic acid/CREB cycle, which is used when you are using fats as your energy supply, may have a different purpose. It may not be about making ATP.
0101:19:33 Dr. Gominak’s desert island herb, nutrient or supplement: Her choice is vitamin D, even on a desert island.
01:30:35 Dr. Gominak’s Elevator Pitch: We can impact our children, especially children of color. It they don’t go outside, they don’t make enough vitamin D.

The CURE for insomnia is physical ACTIVITY, NOT DRUGS. THE SUN and activity is the only remedy. Remember, she is a an Allopathic practitioner, not holistic. She herself has a sleep disorder due to lack of activity. Yet, as one ages, the will to exercise could diminish. Thats where the road meets the r u beer and we either force ourselves or take pharmaceuticals. THE basic eating of whole organic food, least greens, fruit n vegetable protein far, far surpasses the slow digestion of animal protein. Less is more.,

I suffered low energy for more than 5 years and had no idea that I was deficient in Vitamin D. Several tests were conducted and everything showed I was in perfect health, yet I couldn't stop feeling tired with extremely low energy. It was through a "miracle" that a lab tested for my vitamin D and realised it was significantly low. In fact, they were surprised I was even functioning at all. I have never joked with my Vitamin D after that day. I read more about it and realised people with darker skin need to spend more time in the sun for their bodies to metabolise vitamin D. If you live in cold weather or do not get enough sunlight, please get yourself a good Vit D supplement. Please remember, it is important to check with your doctor before taking any medication. Knowledge is power.

Darylne... I am white, of Irish descent, and had a severe vitamin D deficiency. Sorry to say, doctors don’t tell any of us about vitamin D deficiency. It is only this last year or two that the mainstream medical establishment in the US is finally starting to come clean about the fact that most human beings of any color are deficient ( and in magnesium and B vites as well). You see, if we all stay healthy, drug companies lose money. And drug companies absolutely hate that a simple non-pharmaceutical can take a huge bite out of their profits. Yes, doctors absolutely need to tell black and brown folks about vitamin D. They need to tell everyone. I have been telling my black husband of 20 years that he is deficient and he would not believe me until he finally went to the doctor and was told he was nearly depleted. He thought he was completely healthy since he’s athletic and in great shape for his age. He doesn’t drink, smoke or engage in any risky behavior. He watches me take my daily 20,000 IUs of vitamin D3 $ K2 And was too arrogant to consider that he was also deficient. He now tells all of his black friends to get checked out.

It’s well documented, yet American cancer societies refuse to make that knowledge front and center. Front and center, though, is their constant request for donations to keep their organizations running. Imagine if every single person corrected their vitamin D deficiencies. To do that in situations not calling for it could mean their job and livelihood. Im not saying its right but its not as easy as just pouring your heart about it. In fact, I had a Vitamin D level of 17 and they didn't even bother to tell me. A new functional medicine doctor mentioned it a year later. I've been challenged on how much coffee I drink when I drink NONE. I've been brought to task for staying in bed when I cannot sleep. If I got up to do things I would NEVER sleep. Of course people break sleep hygiene rules when they haven't worked. Now that I've started keto and supplements for my adrenals (including Vitamin D) I'm beginning to see some improvements in sleep. I've waited 12 years for this information and much of that was spent in futility in doctors offices. Mike, thank you for all of the information you're bringing to people.

I have a child with autism also and I see first hand how nutrition affects her behavior and if she has pains or not, her ability to focus, if she has stims or not, the amount of meltdowns she has or not, her ability to retain information. Of course they're going to want the sugary foods, it's their gut convincing them that they need those foods in their system, but balancing it out with nutritious foods is the key or finding more nutritious substitutes for the junky food they like. I will typically make my child a smoothie to increase her intake of nutrients. I do a beet, Apple, Ginger, smoothie that I find helps to calm her gut. I juice celery and let her drink celery water along with other stuff, as well as give her a organic multivitamin and a fat source such as olive oil, grapeseed oil, fish oil. Because of their pickiness and the way their body processes things children with autism are frequently deficient in vitamins, minerals etc. If her schedule allows her to it may help your sister in law if she lets her child help her prepare something. I find that when my daughters in the kitchen with me helping me she's more likely to want to taste what she helped make. I let her taste the ingredients separately if she prefers, smell, touch and label whatever ingredients we're using with a name, it not only fulfills those who have sensory issues but also helps them to feel like they have some control of something. It's hard getting them off the crunchy, sugary foods train. For instance as a sweet or candy I'll give my daughter honey sticks or dark chocolate, that way she can satiate her sweet tooth but also get some benefits nutritionally. Sometimes I will hide nutritious foods in other foods. If I'm making spaghetti and meat sauce with a gluten free pasta I'll also steam some pumpkin and puree it and mix it in with the meat sauce. Even making popsicles out of whole fruit/ vegetable juices, that I blend in a NutriBullet. Or pancakes out of bananas or with carrots in it. Or cupcakes with carrots or made out of zucchini. My daughter was very picky and still is. In her earlier years she only wanted to drink almond milk for a very long time. Because of sensory issues some kids with autism don't like how certain foods feel in their mouth or going down their throat. Something that I started using was teething tools, such as a chew stick or achieving tubes or even baby size toothbrushes, the regular ones and the ones that you put on your finger, I rub them inside of her mouth along the sides and along her gums and teeth to desensitize inside her mouth to different textures also using a reward system when she takes a bite to address to behavior aspect of not wanting to eat certain foods. Now she's eating fish, platanos, quinoa and variety of other healthy foods, she doesn't always want to but I do make sure to sit with her as she's eating those non-preferred foods. She still wants to reach for the sugary snacks and foods, I don't completely deprived her but I do try to make her main meals as nutritious as possible and give her SuperFood nutritious smoothies throughout the day. I've been there so I truly sympathize with your sister in law I know it's a tough thing to go through, but just keep on encouraging her and helping her.

Your so right about this and I was wondering the same. If I take vitamin d without magnesium I have horrible headaches .. That's with b complex as well and if I take magnesium the headaches don't appear.

Excellent!! So I'm a licensed sleep technologist, in sleep medicine for 20 years, and I've always had the understanding that we are paralyzed in REM so as not to act out our dreams. I just heard a totally different take on that today. Also, I have been deeply inspired by this video. I just finished my Master's degree in clinical nutrition with a very functional and integrative approach and very much interested in microbiome research. Thank you for helping me to see for the first time a connection between the microbiome and sleep and how I might pursue this further as a career. Awesome presentation!

A truly gifted scientist , so clearly communicated with Mike ( I think because she felt Mike was really understanding and hearing her with awe and appreciating the information she shared and the connections her mind had made with out having to to say he understood. Amazing communicator of her findings, and so relieved to share them with Mike because he let her know silently, he understood the science enough to value her and even reinforce many of her small hypothesis that built up to key or most ground breaking final hypothesis. Excellent talk with a great interviewer. Thank you both so much.

This might have nothing to do with your MS, but I had a friend, who the doctor told him, he had MS . One day it just got better. He asked himself what have I done differently. He was a heavy coke drinker and when he ran out, is when he got better. He quit his pop and it went totally away. I tried to tell this story to to another MS person. She said I live off of Pepsi. I haven't known a lot of people with MS, but ones I know either drink coke or Pepsi. I would like to see a study done on this.
