Vitamin A, foods and immunity

Vitamin A is needed for immunity and is cheap
Vitamin A (which is retinol) and immunity
WHO report
www.who.int/emergencies/disea...
www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamin...
Vitamin A has several important functions
helping natural defence against illness and infection (immune system) work properly
helping vision in dim light
keeping skin and the lining of some parts of the body, such as the nose, healthy
Good sources of vitamin A
Good sources of vitamin A (retinol) include:
cheese
eggs
oily fish
fortified low-fat spreads
milk and yoghurt
liver and liver pâté
If you're pregnant you should avoid eating liver or liver products, (NHS, 2023)
Excess vitamin A is toxic.
Vitamin A deficiency
www.who.int/data/nutrition/nl...
What are the consequences and implications?
Night blindness is one of the first signs of vitamin A deficiency.
In its more severe forms, vitamin A deficiency contributes to blindness by making the cornea very dry, thus damaging the retina and cornea.
An estimated 250 000-500 000 children who are vitamin A-deficient become blind every year,
and half of them die within 12 months of losing their sight.
World’s leading preventable cause of childhood blindness.
Deficiency of vitamin A is associated with significant morbidity and mortality from common childhood infections,
Vitamin A deficiency also contributes to maternal mortality and other poor outcomes of pregnancy and lactation.
It also diminishes the ability to fight infections.
Even mild, subclinical deficiency can be a problem, because it may increase children's risk for respiratory and diarrhoeal infections,
decrease growth rates,
slow bone development and decrease the likelihood of survival from serious illness.
Beta carotene
Red-orange pigment, in plants and fruits,
especially carrots and colourful vegetables.
The body converts beta carotene into vitamin A
The advantage of dietary beta carotene is that the body only converts as much as it needs.
Healthy antioxidant
May prevent cognitive decline
jamanetwork.com/journals/jama...
May help lung function
thorax.bmj.com/content/61/4/320
Both may be due to preventing oxidative stress
www.medicalnewstoday.com/arti...
Foods rich in beta carotene:
Apricots, Asparagus, Broccoli, Carrots, Chives, Dandelion leaves, Grapefruit, (Chilli powder, oregano, paprika, parsley), Kale,
Onions, Peas, Peppers, Plums, Pumpkin, Spinach, Squash, Sweet potatoes.
Role of Vitamin A in the Immune System
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
Needed for mucous membrane innate immunity (respiratory and GI)
Essential for the normal function of many immune cells such as T lymphocytes
Vitamin A deficiency is associated with severe Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia in children
kzread.info?even...
Beijing, Feb, 2020
N = 122 children, (0 - 15)
52 sMPP
Severe Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia
70 nsMPP
Non-severe Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia
Serum levels of vitamins A, D, and E were measured and compared, and correlated with nsMPP and sMPP.
Results
The age was older in the sMPP samples than that in the nsMPP samples.
(7.12 vs. 4.01)
So older children suffered more severe infections.
Vitamin A deficiency was present in both the nsMPP and sMPP samples.
Vitamin A levels were significantly lower in the sMPP serum than that in the nsMPP serum.
(0.15 vs. 0.19)
Vitamin A deficiency was defined
Deficiency, less than 0.2 mg/L,
Subclinical vitamin A deficiency, 0.2-0.3 mg/L
Normal vitamin A level by 0.3-0.7 mg/L.
So, children with lower vitamin A levels suffered more severe infections.
Vitamins E and D levels were also lower in sMPP children
Vitamin E (7.4 vs. 8.22)
Vitamin D (23.08 vs. 32.07)
Both sMPP and nsMPP did not show a deficiency of vitamins E and D.

I have the diet from a Canadian textbook from the late 40s, early 50s. For pregnant women. Meat, fish, poultry. At least one egg a day. Cheese at least 3 times a week. Liver once a week. 4 cups whole milk, water 1 serving whole grain cereal for breakfast 1 slice whole wheat bread with butter for lunch 1 yellow and 1 green vegetable with butter 1 small salad, 1 cup 1 small potatoe 2 fruit, one citrus, may be tomatoe If you put on too much poundage remove the grains. They knew that grains should be limited in the diet, and for some eliminated. Now Death Canada warns not to eat liver and recommends the semi vegan , obesity causing death diet. Full of grains, sugars, seed oils, etc. In 1988 I starved myself on 1600 low fat, high fibre calories a day during my pregnancy. Felt guilty for not eating enough. Felt guilty for the 80 pounds I gained. I had been told by 3 different doctors I would never have children. No explanation why. Went on the evil Atkins diet before getting married. Stayed on it until getting pregnant. Unfortunately switched back to the Death Canada recommendations. Many years later, in desperation, went on the evil Atkins diet. Before that starving myself fat and sick on 1200 low fat, high fibre calories a day. And returned to the Death Canada recommendations when I became pregnant. Been a low carber 14 years now. Still angry at the lies. Both my girls have issues which I connect to the Death Canada food guidelines.

Mouth and nasal care is the answer. If you eat food that has sugar, the bacteria can grow and spread. So clean your mouth after eating. Listerine with high alcohol content kills a lot of the germs. Normally I wouldn't rec this but it does kill the germs. Next thing is Xylitol nasal spray in the morning and night, it also creates an environment that bacteria and viruses can't grow. I started doing this 5 days ago after 6 weeks of a cough, post nasal drip and antibiotic resistant lung infection I couldn't get rid of. Feeling 95% better already. I'm going to keep doing this as preventative care as it works so well.

We specifically told them no to any treatments the day they said she had covid and the dr was like sorry it wasn’t in the notes. And they don’t care. They blame her cause she wasn’t eating but that’s what c diff does and once they gave her the rem it spread the infection. They are worse than worthless

My mum nearly died too in 2022 after the hospital gave her Remsidivir (protocol worldwide treatment, heard is snake venom). We kept reminding docs not to give her but at night they did. But luckily her body rejected the poison n she vomited the whole night. The next day she recovered on her own. Later she said Jesus saved her. She knew. Jesus has done it many times for her once she was brought back to life after doc confirmed her death. She is a prayer warrior.

It is almost impossible for beta carotene to get to toxic levels and the body can make the vitamin A that it needs from the beta carotene. Fasting can help a great deal with all autoimmune disorders! Some benefits of doing occasional extended fasting: High blood pressure is lowered to normal levels very quickly while fasting. Fibrosis/scarring is reversed over time, including in the heart and lungs. Fasting increases T cell production and regenerates the thymus. T cells are vital in fighting cancer, autoimmune disease and infections but as we age the thymus stops making as many of them. Fasting releases stem cells, which then can become new T cells. Fasting also releases growth hormone, which regenerates the thymus itself, which aids this process! Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria, plaques and viruses by the immune system. This will also remove any spikes, whether natural or unnatural in origin! Blood sugar and insulin are lowered when fasting, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased as fasting improves metabolic health, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy. Fasting restores your circadian rhythm to normal over time. Fasting increases nitric oxide release. Reflexes and short term memory are increased. Fasts from 36-96 h increase metabolic rate due to norepinephrine release! Telomeres are lengthened and fasting also increases anti-aging Yamanaka factors. After 72 hours or more fasted, your body recycles up to 1/3 of all immune bodies, rejuvenating your entire immune system. This helps prevent the onset of new autoimmune conditions, which develop through a leaky gut and damaged immune system. Fasting can help with MS, Depression, BPD, Autism and seizures. Thymus is regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. The thymus also plays a vital role in fighting cancer. Weight loss from daily caloric restriction has 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight lost as lean tissue while many studies show fat loss from 36 h fasts without losing any lean tissue! The obese will lose extra tissue like loose skin while fasting, but the skinny or frail will have increased growth hormone release than the obese, which helps to make more lean tissue and reduce frailness. When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell required for viruses to replicate. The hunger hormone ghrelin also lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting. What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast. Most teas and herbs are OK. Most supplements and meds will either break ketosis directly or contain a filler that will. Many meds are dangerous to take while fasting. Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone. Fasting also increases insulin sensitivity, which helps with muscle building. Fasts of 36-96 will not affect short term female fertility or affect menstrual cycle. They also may increase long term fertility, especially in women with PCOS. Fasting reduces pain and anxiety by stimulating the endocannabinoid system in a similar way to CBD oil. One day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! This reduces leptin resistance, which impairs immune function. Stomach acid is reduced over time while fasting and can allow for the healing of treatment resistant ulcers. Some patients may need continued acid reduction medication while fasting. Does the body preferentially prefer glucose as a fuel? No. Except for brief periods of very intense exercise, your body mainly burns fats in the form of free fatty acids. Your brain also prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when they are available in equal quantity to glucose. Fasting stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle damaged proteins and foreign matter such as viruses. It will can kill cancerous and senescent cells Lowering insulin via fasting virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism, fighting infection and cancer prevention! Fasting releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth. This can help a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. When not in ketosis, the brain can only burn carbohydrate, which produces a great deal of damaging ROS the brain has to deal with. Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells, destroying them. Senescent cells are responsible for many of the effects of aging and are a root cause of the development of cancer. A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row also provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD usually has 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and extremely low carbs. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. They also help with dementia and many other issues even if you take them while not fasting! Glycine and trimethylglycine can also be useful supplements while fasting that won't break ketosis and have many benefits. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness or tremors, then simply break the fast and seek advice. @@LTPottenger yes I do this sometimes but I need to be careful as have hypothyroidism which is a metabolic condition and it's important for me to have regular, balanced meals for weight control (which is excellent tbh) and I am also prone to hypoglycaemia.

Fasting helps with hypothyroidism, so does lowering the carbs. Autoimmune problems start in the gut, but can also be helped by T-reg cells. These are produced int he thymus from stem cells, and fasting dramatically accelerates this process, which generally turns off in older adults.@@catevansartist

During the pandemic I started taking a multivitamin and mineral supplement from one of the big Supermarkets and had continued up until a month ago when I read an article which suggested people experiencing bladder frequency might try stopping any supplements. I duly eliminated this particular tablet (only now taking Vit D) and surprisingly feel much much better. I suppose you can have too much of a 'good' thing and your body then has to work hard to get rid of the excess!

The problem with Beta carotene is that perhaps half the population cannot convert it effectively to retinol. Therefore it is misleading to imply that vegetable sources of vitamin A are superior, or even equal to, animal sources for many people.

Every different body is different, I can eat only meat for days on end campingweeks on end. When home my garden is full of fresh and I eat that along with fresh caught fish and rabbit. I think his point was more about find out what your lacking ( via a blood test ) and eat what you need.I never get sick in the last 20 years never had any shots since childhood 50 years ago. Point is these idiots who think they can fix everyone with 1 shot is absurd. Some day we might have that teck but right now we are far from that. My kids are all grown and chose to not take the latest and not sick, I taught them to grow and fish. Best part is we are not suffering the food costs of todays market, in 20 years I have not bought much "food" chemical grown. Personaly I think the food they make is full of garbage nobody needs and causing people to be sick.

The missing point here is not getting enough vitamin A,D or E but the bad absorption due to the other chemicals in regular foods we take everything and we think are "healthy". Things like oxalates (present in leafy greens for instance) / lectins (present in almost all grains and legumes for instance) / sugar and refined carbohydrates / alcohol and tobacco + other well 'approved' drugs / ... so worrying about getting 'too much' dose of one of those vitamins is likely not too happen.
