ADD/ADHD | What Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?

Here’s everything you need to know about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. Get the transcript at www.understood.org/en/article...
Thomas E. Brown, PhD, discusses ADHD diagnosis, ADHD symptoms, available ADHD treatment options, and ADHD medication. As our expert says, ADD/ADHD is not a behavior problem. It has far more to do with the brain’s management system. Remember, ADHD has nothing to do with how smart a person is.

Not me getting emotional watching this. I'm an adult with ADHD and it's something I feel so embarrassed about. I've gone back to school as an adult and I feel like every time I bring up my ADHD people look at me like I'm making an excuse. My ability to have a conversation about my schoolwork makes me seem like a savant. When I walk into the classroom my working memory goes out the window. I hate that I can explain everything in pristine detail, but can never write it down because my mind is moving too fast.

I don't probably have AHDH but I have bibolar and there is a lot in common between these. I'm sometimes ADHD depends on a day (without meds). There is few tricks you can use to get boring stuff done. Firstly I use chopping technique, make the task as small of a piece as possible so you can go forward with it without forgetting it midway or loosing focus. Think about a question you can aswer to get forward in your task. Math is easy when you have clearly something you can start with. Like company's profit, 500 000€, write it down, go next. When there is a question, think one part of a time how you get to the answer, make sub questions. You can't hold everything in your mind same time. One small bit you can. Secondly have conversations about the subject. That will make you more interested in the subject. Also find a way to make subject interesting. We can do interesting tasks well.

Being out of high school now it’s become a goal of mine to be sophisticated and a lot of the people I look up too have that and a great memory to go along with it, I’m just so hesitant on taking aderral because for one I don’t want to have to depend on medication and what if you become addicted? Hollow, empty, angry, procrastination, not finishing what you started, lack of interest in anything, memory loss, forgetfulness. Thank You!

I was diagnosed with depression 8 years ago and have tried more than 8 different types of medication and none of it worked, was thinking I was just dumb, lazy or something. I've never thought about ADHD before since I don't act like the stereotypical ADHD person being hyperactive but looking into it lately it is surprising how well I fit into all of the symptoms. Watching this video made me cry last night, finally feel like I understand what's going on with me and why my life has been such a mess, perfect explanation of it, thank you :)

It feels like a tedious and continues task to get up and going after every time the world starts tearing down again. And my environment doesn’t seem to be build to utilize the positives; to understand, support and accept the weaknesses that come along with the positives. It’s so hard to even understand myself. I’m in therapy, had ADHD group sessions, found my peers. But still, The world crumbles and I stumble, The world neglects and I reflect, But I can’t seem to get the pieces right.

I love that a video about ADHD is 28 minutes long Edit: I have no idea what to say, but I cannot thank this video enough. I'm not even kidding, it is responsible for my diagnosis. There was a night in August last year where I listened to this video in the background and just listened in awe, realising that practically everything this doctor said, was something relatable. I had suspected it was ADHD well before but we didn't have absolute proof. In September I got my actual diagnosis and was provided with medication (But this is not the only solution to ADHD! Some people find that alternate methods work just as well, everyone is different), and ever since, it has been life changing. I've been getting the support and arrangements needed in school, I can finally relax a little bit and not be so hard on myself for who I am, it's just incredible, and it wouldn't've happened if not for this video. So huge thanks to Understood for uploading, and to Dr Thomas E. Brown!

I agree completely! It’s so hard to describe what ADHD is like to someone who doesn’t have it. My wife and I both work in mental health and even when she knows everything about it from the textbooks and working with her patients at, she doesn’t know what it’s like to live with it. I also think the fact that we can’t describe what ADHD is really like makes it harder for the ones who need the medication‘s to talk with their providers about it because a lot of us know that people like to abuse and amphetamines and Ritalin and will pretty much describe everything that we know from experience and it’s hard for the clinicians to tell the difference.

I feel you. I have the same issues. I actually switched to audiobooks because it takes me so long to read a book due to reading the same paragraph multiple times, or having to go back several pages to read something again to get context for something later because I either forgot what happened, or...... shit.... oh yeah, completely missed something. Even with audio books, I find myself rewinding upwards of a half hour because I zoned out and missed a bunch of shit. I have been independent of my medication for 5 years now. I am a full time student and working full time. For the first time in my life I have maintained a 3.8 GPA and am set to graduate next year. Just wish I hadn't waited so long to return to school sometimes. My biggest issue that I am dealing with while being unmedicated is like he said, putting things off until it's more of an emergency. My procrastination has gotten so bad, but I am able to complete all of my coursework in about 12 hours and submit within an hour of the deadline no problem. My biggest fear is if I continue staying off my medication, that I will not be able to enter my career field and be successful (computer programming). Programming deals with deadlines, and I am incapable of completing things prior to a deadline in my current form. Perhaps I should find a doc and get back on my medication, but I have gone so far and proven so many doctors wrong who told me I would never be able to function without it. The doctors were simultaneously correct, and incorrect. I can function fine, I just have a hard time with time management. In fact, I have no sense of time. 5 minutes can pass, and it will feel like 5 hours. 3 hours will pass, and it will feel like only seconds has passed. I only know the days of the week by whether or not I work, or whether something is due and I need to knock it out in an hour......... It's frustrating, but sometimes I feel like a superhero at the same time. Now that I've finished this comment, I need to rewind about 5 minutes.... I think. [edited to make the comment less word vomit] [edit again, I completely forgot that months will pass without me realizing it as well... But I think that may have to do with aging.... Though I'm only 30, so time shouldn't be moving that fast yet...]

Even at 62, I'll NEVER forget the first time I took a stimulant. It was as if my brain re-booted for the first time. It wasn't a prescribed medicine & the use of illegal stimulants in an effort to stay "booted" certainly didn't do me any favors. It was after an honest talk with a good Dr that I finally had a legal & fairly safe way of treating this. I believe the rise in stimulant use may be caused by folks self-medicating as I did & the addiction is more to the feeling of thinking clearly than the actual drug, at least at first. Anyone else relate?

'it makes it look like it's a problem with willpower' I CRIED when he said that. My mother used to tell me 'you just lack willpower, try developing it'. I still don't know if I have ADHD and probably won't be even diagnosed, 'cause I live in a country where it's not considered a disease. I lived my whole life in a cage of my own mind, feeling like I am an incomplete human with this defective brain. Always tried to 'just focus' and push myself, thinking maybe it's all in my head, but it never worked. Man I am so tired

  • @bradblask

    @bradblask

You are not alone and there's nothing 'wrong' with you. ADHD can be maddening but it can be managed. Your brain is not defective it just functions differently than other's. Medication has helped me considerably. I understand that may be hard for you to get where you are but don't lose hope. I know exactly what you mean when you say "I'm so tired", I could never count the number of times in my life that I've said out loud to myself "Please just shut the f*** up!" when my mind seems to be filled with noise that I can't make stop. It can be exhausting but don't give up man. Do the things that you are good at and do your best at the things you're not and keep looking for help. The fact that you are here means that you are working to improve your situation and that matters.

I’m sorry. I’m a mom and both my sons 17&19 both have ADHD and it’s pretty bad. As a parent I can tell you it’s hard. It’s a fine line. I want to be understanding but also hold them accountable for their behavior. I’ve seen parents blame all on adhd because it’s easy and others who just “no excuse” because they want to teach kids to learn not to “blame the adhd” It’s just so hard for a parent. I try my best to understand my sons and love them and show lots of mercy. It’s a view from a parent. Try to (if you can) send educational videos to your dad. That helps a lot.....

ADHD.... God bless those that have it. Educators never understood us. They always told me to just focus and not try doing multiple tasks at the same time. Now I'm 70. I love reading books and watching movies at the same time. I work in chemistry and material science. I love working on several projects at the same time. I develop other products during the down time, while waiting for my current projects to finish mixing and or running thermal or aging tests and or adhesion testing. Thats my ADHD. I drove my co-workers,parents,step parents, teachers, and my wonderful German, highly organize, and virtually perfect wife crazy all my life. But I love being ADHD. I learned everything from how to... water purification, explosives, armor, horse shampoo, pie baking, nuclear radiation shielding, industrial coatings, and a dozen other interests that no one would believe or understand. When you are so called diagnosed with ADHD celebrate! You are going to drive so called normal people crazy all your life, but you are a rare and really cool person, with very few friends if any. Live with it.

ADHD is the ultimate COMBO to destroying your grades. Can't maintain a consistent study schedule. Only studies when a sense of emergency awakes, usually it being the night before the exam or any actual task. Then you can't get the answers right because you have awful short term memory and forgot everything that you studied the night before. Knowing that if you studied bits for 1-2 weeks you would probably have done better, but couldn't do it because of ADHD. nice

ADHD is so misunderstood and people stereotype it as like a hyper kid on a sugar rush. It hurts so much when you’re told “just do it “ and you say you can’t help it. They will never understand that we really try and want to do it or whatever it is, but it’s literally against our conscious will. I appreciate how real this video explained ADHD in ways I don’t think I could ever describe. Remember to be patient with your fellow neurodivergent humans, they are honestly doing their possible best.

Look, it’s good you’re trying to educate me on ADHD or ADD. Can you hurry this up? I got a wall to stare at.

I can't believe it, my whole life I've struggled and this man literally explained it without ever speaking to him, I'm just amazed

This... I'm 26 and have always known something wasn't the same with me as everyone else and almost every thing he said is me. I'm simultaneously relieved because nobody has ever understood me like this and frustrated because it's possible that things could have been so much easier for me if someone had caught it when I was younger and I received a formal diagnosis and treatment. I've been reading about inattentive ADHD and I have all of the signs/symptoms. So it's time I seek a formal diagnosis and treatment.

ADHD is like having 50 tabs open in your mind and you don't know where the music is coming from.

Not sure if you have adhd too and this is how it works specifically for you(IF that's how it even works at all)or if you're going on your own head cannon... but as a person with HIGH functioning adhd.. its more like a television that's ALWAYS playing in your head, except the tv basically has a mind of its own and it HAS NO off switch. and any LITTLE thing effects whats playing on it... including your own feelings. I actually had something interesting to say to add about the whole 50 tabs example thing. I was GONNA say about how this is kinda inaccurate(for me)but the more I thought about it.. the more am understanding it a bit better. yea... I guess it IS(also)like having 50 tabs opened in your mind and not knowing where the music is coming from... except I'd add that you can't even as much as CLOSE all of those tabs. . . they close.. WHENEVER they feel like it. The example that occurred to me was a bit more different than your example. . dunno... Guess I liked the tv approach a bit better(lol).

I think in the golden age of the internet and smartphones, we're all finding it hard to focus. As I watch this, I find myself, glancing at rolling news, writing this and back on the man talking about ADHD
