Visiting The Spot Where 2 People Were Killed When Queens Drive Flooded - Liverpool -

A man and woman have died after becoming trapped in their car in a flooded road in Liverpool.
It happened in Queens Drive in the Mossley Hill area shortly before 21:00 BST on Saturday night, police said.
Passers-by fought to help the pair, named locally as married couple Philip and Elaine Marco, who were stuck inside a black Mercedes in deep floodwater.
Emergency workers took them to hospital, but they were pronounced dead.
Amateur footage filmed in the area appears to show water gushing on to the road - which dips under a bridge.
Met Office data shows heavy rain at more than 32mm (1.25 inches) an hour was falling close to where it happened.
Merseyside Police said the pair's next of kin have been informed and formal identification has been made.
Det Ch Insp Mike Dalton said: "Our thoughts go out to the family of the man and woman who sadly lost their lives in this tragic incident, despite the best efforts of passing members of the public, our officers and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Services.
"We are at the early stages of an ongoing investigation to establish the circumstances.
"Road closures remain in the area and motorists are advised to avoid the road."
A Liverpool City Council spokesman said highways staff had assisted the police, adding: "Our thoughts are with those involved and their families."
The authority reiterated a plea for motorists to continue to avoid the area while the investigation takes place.
People living in the area told the BBC the road has been problematic for decades with cars and buses getting stuck in deep water there.
Fifty-four-year-old Mike Sims said he regularly got stuck in flood water when he cycled to school more than 40 years ago.
"Often when it rained it would be up to my waist and I had to get off my bike and walk," he said.
"My mother was stranded in her car in waist high water whilst dropping us of at school. Her mini van was flooded and pushed by passers-by."
He said buses also used to get trapped when it rained.
Liverpool's deputy lord mayor Richard Kemp said he had raised concerns about flooding in the area for about 20 years.
In a letter to the council, he said short-term measures had been carried out, such as flushing out the drains, but "this has never been enough".
"The major problem is that the core of the drainage system is more than 150 years old and is clearly inadequate," he said.
He called for action including a better drainage system, better lighting and an electric warning system for drivers.
Rebecca Wilson, who was in a taxi in Queens Drive around the time, told the Liverpool Echo she thought the flooding might have been caused by a burst pipe.
She described her experience as "terrifying", saying the water was "gushing down like waterfall" and that it looked like a burst dam.
Police are appealing for anyone who was in Queens Drive and saw what happened, or stopped to try and help, to come forward.
A file has been passed to the coroner.

I had people say to me, how could someone be of stupid to drive into flooded water. What people don't realise is how dark it is down there at night and how much the hill actually goes down. My heart breaks for their family, what a horrible thing to happen. Like something out of a nightmare. I actually got myself a window punch for my car keys, because you just never know. Thanks for the video. Denise x

I remember years ago when I was going to college our photographic technician saw me and gave me a lift the short distance in. I was about to lock the passenger door and he told me not to. He said he used to be a Fire man and they always told people not to lock your doors when travelling 'cos if there's an accident it's harder fir the firemen to get you out as they need to use the cutting equipment. Of course a woman driving alone needs to lock the door for safety . He also told me don't leave your handbag on the passenger seat, put it under the seat. So if you stop at the lights no one can look in and see it. Mind you this was in the 80s and now modern cars are different.

In the council vid they mentioned the sensors in the drain to measure flow of water. I think that's what they meant by in the gully's. The other sensors have to be underneath those drain covers.

All it needs is a pump, instead of the sensors dropping barriers, have them turn a water pump on. It only needs lifting to the road above into its drains. Its too low to fit drains.

We all know what people are like when the barriers come down at a train Level Crossing. You will still get motorists & pedestrians going around the barrier but at least they are doing so at their own risk. Don't expect the emergency services to risk their lives to save you, don't moan when your car insurer refuses to pay out when your car is a write off or claim compensation for loss or injuries for your own stupidity.

Surely by the time the water hit the sensors then it would be already too late to lower the barriers, the water would already be too high and people would be in danger of being drowned

Glazed brick the pipes are weep holes in the abutment walls to help with water pressure buildup behind the wall the wall wh pressure grouted 30 yea ago to fill the large voids behind the wall concrete repair carried out to the bridge soffit and then coated with a anti-carbonation coating the road surface was completely refinished at the same time I was there for 2 months on this contract never seen any flooding and it was winter

Re the gates only spanning half the road in each direction. I think the point is …if there’s a flood, the barriers block traffic heading into the perilous area with a single barrier in each direction. You could drive past them yes. You would have to make a decision to do so, you’d have to deviate to take take the oncoming lane to get past the flood gate. So to my mind, if you ignore the flood gate when it’s down, thus ignoring the warning, cross to the other side and proceed under the bridge, and end up getting in trouble, it’s your fault. 🤗 And when you think about it further, they can’t block the road completely as that could prevent an escape/ emergency vehicle assistance. So I don’t think it’s meant to be like a North Korea border wall that nobody can penetrate. It’s meant to be a warning system.
