You're wrong. Phobia means fear but it also means intolerance and yes Poles are intolerant. They are intolerant of many people, which is typical of eastern Europeans. They should never have allowed Poland into the EU!!

Two Russians living in Warsaw. Never hiding our nationality. Met exclusively great people, Poles, Ukrainians, and Belorussians. Never had any issues because of our ethnicity ationality with people, more of that, people usually are supportive and compassionate when they hear where we are from, as they understand difference between crazy regime and regular people, who also suffer from it. Yes, I learned that. I believe the same people we call "Gutsul". They speak a language closer to Russian than even Ukrainian (or Slovak). At least I can understand them better. I did meet few in Slovakia an Ukraine and never seen one who did not speak perfectly Russian. But it's a different tongue (and very interesting sense of humor). @@mourdebars yes, you're right. What I described was specifically Red Rus'. It is there that pierogi ruskie come from. So south-eastern Poland and western Ukraine. Black Rus' is in the Belarus-Lithuanian border, and White Rus' is a larger reagion from central Belarus to Smolensk. So some parts of Russia are in Rus' but Russia and Rus' are not synonymous, which is quite a common misconception.

Ukraine has been shelling Russian Ukrainians in the East. That’s what’s been happening whether you like it or not. 14 000 people gone on both sides before 2022. Ukraine targeted civilians and not the military infrastructure. Has been doing so for ten years. The reason for that was that they were rebels. Poles are not on the right side here.

Ukraine was shelling separatists. I'm not saying they're innocent but Russia clearly started this by annexing Crimea. We might not be the biggest fans of Ukraine but Russia is simply worse and would have done worse to us if they got a chance. Like they did in the past.

Finland, Poland, Estonia, even Czechia we all did our homework when it comes to Russia. We are not delusional about it like Italians or Serbs.

There is a bigger picture as well. Maybe your reasons are justified. Maybe not. Maybe 80% of "us" (now wearing my Russian hat, not the American and not the Hungarian) do support what you say (I am carefully avoiding the word "war", notice that!). Or maybe not. It is not that hard to figure out, one way or the other: more communication! Besides, with more communication you would have more chance to convince "us" that "we" are dead wrong. The opposite is also true: hell knows, maybe I convince you, that there is nothing better than Russia. I, too, need one thing to do that: meet with you. Now step back and decide for yourself: who did cut off all communication and make the travel for people as hard as possible both ways? As far as I see: the sanctions (esp. the travel sanctions) are incredibly easy to break. I travel back and forth, have no or little restrictions and observe. The poor lady who made this clip was suffering merely due her inexperience, not because it is impossible. You may remember the idiotic logic like "travel is luxury, why not prohibit Russians to travel?". Same logic was expressed multiple times by Zelensky himself and Ursula. (Do we "LOVE" them both!). Than the story behind the confiscation of cars. This is illegal, by the way. If you go back you see the roots: the people around Victoria Nuland. She is the undersecretary of State and a known neo-con. Why did Biden chose a hawkish neo-con to be his undersecretary of State escapes me. Some Russians and Ukrainians don't know their history. They don't know what they did to the Circassians, Tatars, the Siberian Turkic people, or the Japanese people after WWII. They were sinking civilian evacuation ships for fun. Russian Far East is full of people with partial Ukrainian ancestry, because Ukrainians were the vanguards for Imperial Russian colonization...and now they're being sent to Ukraine to fight many Ukrainians who have partial Russian ancestry. The Ukrainian faction was a influential political force in Soviet Union after Stalin, yet Ukrainians now claim they were under Russian cultural and political occupation and play the victim card.

US suspended all visa issuance in Russia, so Russians have to travel to an other country. She did not know, she could be (much) better off to travel to Belgrade, Serbia or to Ankara (Turkiye). The consular agreement between USA and Russia allows that. Instead, she felt being forced to travel to a country with 400+ years of political controversy. Little poor lady knew, the things are not as tough, as in imagination. And there is no need to travel to Warszawa if same thing can be done in Belgrade. The same goes the "other" way and if you notice in the comments Polish people are split on the topic. On my side I was never treated badly in Poland and the more I travel there, the more I like. I travel there very often because in order to reach Kaliningrad I have no choice, but transit through Poland. I did not feel any sympathy of Polish people towards my license plates (USA). Many are straight grimacing at them, sometimes even the border guards. When they learn that I am either Russian or Hungarian things improve dramatically. So my experience with Poland: the least popular country is probably US of A. But it never goes really bad, just you feel the shoulders being turned and see the grimace. Remember: if I drive my car, the word "USA" is literally written on my forehead. Even if the things are a bit different.

​@@anata5127 You mean Warszawa, or USA (because I wrote about it)? I can't say much about Warszawa because I rarely, if ever transit through the capital. Cities like Torun or Krakow are nice. Even a little town like Braniewo. As far as USA... the beauty is in the eye of beholder. We eventually left it, but once in a while we visit "our" country as tourists. We are much more often in Poland and Russia than in USA lately and don't regret it. But no way I would renounce my US citizenship ever.

Warsaw is very specific, it is not for everyone. She came here in the winter, and Warsaw is not nice in the winter. Secondly she came with a lot of preconceptions and thirdly she seems completely unapologetic/ignorant about her own country aggressions. Does she know what her country has to do with the way Warsaw looks like right now? Didn't think so.

Instead of blaming us blame your own government. There is a reason for all this, relations with russia had gotten better for decades, then Putin ruined it in one single day, taking all that relations development down the drain.

Sorry, but you're wrong about the barszcz. There always was barszcz and barszcz ukraiński here in Poland. Both soups are DIFFERENT. Normal barszcz (also called Polski or red one) is a soup based mostly on beet and its consistency is diluted to the point it's drinkable, while Ukrainian is something you probably know and think about your borschtsch HOWEVER it was called Ukrainian always since the ancient times here.

By definition phobia is an irrational, unrealistic and persistent anxiety disorder. By that definition Poland (and other neighbours) are NOT Russophobic - because their fears and anxieties are not unrealistic or irrational - rather they are rational and realistic given the historical and current behavior of Russia towards their neighbours. Why would you be surprised that Poles don't like Russians and you don't feel welcome? Face it, rightly or wrongly, fairly or unfairly - people express their views because in their minds you represent all that is bad about Russia.

The most interesting thing is that this was recognized even in the Soviet Union itself during the period of democratization of the regime in 1989, if I remember exactly.

A phobia is an anxiety disorder, defined by a persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation - but this just precausions, we didn't forgot or alter our history lessons to fit our desires. It's just reality.

I was working in Siberia in 2013. I had to leave when my visa expired and flew out of Surgut without my interpreter. Checking in turned into a big problem when you don’t speak the same language. The person behind me didn’t speak English but knew what I needed to do. He physically went with me upstairs to check my bag, got my stub then took me back to get my boarding pass. It is nice to get help from strangers when traveling in a foreign country.

Ruskie pierogi are not name after Russia, but after Ruś.

If you want to be taken seriously, don't use the word "russophobic", not even jokingly. It is used exclusively in Russian propaganda and heavily associated with it. Also, having negative opinion of Russia is not the same as having negative opinion of Russian people (ie. being "russophobic"!). So you are drawing wrong conclusions from the statistics you referred. That said, many Russians support their government's policies or feel indifferent about it, so it's not like "russophobia" is totally unfounded. Personally I have a slightly negative attitude towards any random Russian, until he/she proves my prejudices wrong. I wasn't always like this. I was totally neutral about Russians before the EXTRA SPECIAL MILITARY OPERATION TURBO EDITION. Things changed..

It seems to me that a significant part of my compatriots do not display Russophobic attitudes against Russians themselves, including those who live in Poland (though of course there will always be one or another asshole nationalist or racist). But a significant number of my compatriots are also allergic to Russia as a state - authoritarian, not honoring treaties, aggressive and defiant, and at the same time remaining outside the norms of basic civilizational comforts for its citizens. So is Poland Russophobic? Yes, Russophobic towards Putin's Russia, just as it was Russophobic towards the Tsars and Bolsheviks who oppressed us.

We are not russophobic, we are russorealistic.

Lmao. Rossija is the way Greeks called Rus'. They just didn't have letter U, so they used O and added IA in the end like they did with any other countries name. As Pole I'd say that Poland is rather Rusorealistic than Rusophobic. Our history with Russia is full of hostility, and the latest declarations of the Russian authorities are cause for concern due to the war of agression in Ukraine. I'm only talking about the context of international relations. When it comes to interpersonal relations, I wouldn't expect such antipathies, I personally know several Russians and I have a very good opinion of them, but it's probably because they emigrated to Poland as a sign of opposition to Putin's policies. I assume that Russians really can be good and intelligent people, it's just a pity that lately they have had so little opportunity to prove it. Really such a pity because I think that Russian culture has a lot to offer to the civilized world, I am personally a big fan of Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy.

Not sure what you expected from Polish people given the history between these two nations and how Russians treated Poles during / post-war times. You can have fun, party, drink with them but once you start discussing politics and history it may get ugly. Everyone is welcomed and people are friendly unless you start pushing your agenda. That was my impression when visiting Poland. Also not sure what "feeling uncomfortable" means when, as you said, nothing happened. It was basically a scenario in your head.

I have polish friends here in Germany, a family! And once, when the war in 2022 started, i spoke with them a bit longer about it. And i would like to add, that yes correctly, it’s a russophobia existing because of the long history, but even more, i think, many people define russophobia as a kind of hatred, but it’s not hatred, it’s really a pure feeling of fear, that they could be invaded…

Svetlana, Poland has a bad history with Russia. Their country was partitioned in 1795 by Russia, Prussia (now Germany) and Austria. Poles remained under Russian occupation until 1918. The Polish language was banned and Poles were persecuted for speaking their language.

Dear Svetlana. I have the impression that you brought your belief about Poland as the most Russophobic country in the world from Russia. There's nothing we can do about it in Poland, although you can be sure that if you come to Poland again she will be safe. It IS true that Russians are often perceived in a negative manner. Mostly in western Europe. In slavic countries of Eastern and Southern Europe, even if there are strong anti-Russian beliefs in a lot of the population, there is more of a cultural bond, so it is easier to bypass the political aspect. But of course, if you want an easy way out, you can always denounce your heritage, Putin, etc. Self-hating Russians are pretty easily accepted.

From my experience in Poland, everyone I met had normal attitudes toward Russians. I talked with a lot of people about so many things. The only European country I visited and found anti-Russian sentiments was in Hungary, many years ago. I met people there with very strong anti-Russian sentiments. They were also a little disappointed with the United States for not saving them, under Soviet domination. This is why the situation with Orban today is so counter-intuitive. I hear he was he used to be strongly anti-Russian himself and only changed in recent years after visiting Moscow and Beijing and then receiving Russian investment and gas supply. Hungarians are a unique people in Europe but their anger toward Russia stems from brutal suppression under Soviet domination. They told me that literally every Hungarian stood against them and Russia overwhelmed them with massive military force. They tell me Russia had listening posts and microphones hidden everywhere to catch and abduct Hungarians who said anything that did not like.

As a Hungarian, I would say you are right. As other Central and Easter European nations, we had been oppressed by Russia for 45 years, so anti-Russian sentiment was exist 20-30 years ago, but it was not so strong. Orban had the sentiment change towards Russia. Because Russia is not a liberal country, it became idolized by far-rights. Hungary has become a very far-right country under Orban's regime. As a liberal Hungarian, I would say I Am not agaist Russians, I Am only agaist Putin, and his oppressive regime. I would like to see a free, and less chauvinistic Russia in the future. The avarege Russians do not understand Us, Europeans, They do not accept their historical responsibilities.

@@Goorood Same for Bulgaria. During USSR was built more than 3400 dams, 90% of thermal power plant and a nuclear powe rplant with a project for a second , starting in the mid-eighties. @@Goorood Yep, have the Russians been good for Moldova, Moldova was given by the Ottomans to Russia by the Treaty of Bucharest, 1812. In 1871 the Russians tried Russification. To be honest, Moldova was in the nasty position of being caught between Russia and Romania. You don't mention the deportations in the 1940s or the executions by the Soviets before and after German/Romanian occupation, after the Soviets finally succeeded in incorporating Moldova In 1946-1947, at least 216,000 deaths and about 350,000 cases of dystrophy were accounted by historians in the Moldavian SSR alone. In 1944-53, there were several anti-Soviet resistance groups in Moldova; however the NKVD and later MGB managed to eventually arrest, execute or deport their members. Of course everything was lovely in Moldova as the Soviets imported thousands of Russians into parts of Moldova and of course once the Soviet Empire broke up wasn't there a nasty little war where now rhere is a Russian puppet of Transnistria. Thank you for your insight but I doubt you can speak for Eastern Europe either. I have used copy and paste as my typing very slow.

@@EpizodBG Putin providing cheap resources, no they were supplied at market prices. You fail to mention that he invaded Ukraine and Europe has weaned itself of his "Cheap resources". As far as Bulgaria is concerned I am sure they became Independent of Russia when the Soviet Empire went down. Over the years from 1912 (The first Balkan War) Bulgaria has been sliced and diced. The Soviets did presumably build all those dams but at what cost to the population, I note that some hundreds of thousands of ethnic Turks were kicked or left in 1980s. As above when Bulgaria had the chance they rejected the Soviets and became Independent. It is now a member of the EU and NATO. I forgot the mention the various executions by the NKVD after 1944.

@@phann860 The resources that Putin provided were at a very low price. And this was very clearly seen when they stopped, Europe went into recession and Germany began to de-industrialize. We did not "become independent" when USSR fell, our sovereignty was limited yes, but the ties with the West were never interrupted, and we determined the internal policy! Now we have Zero sovereignty, everything is decided in the american embassy, even the ruling cabinet is appointed there! We have been sliced and diced by the Western countries! Everything was built in the name of the people, so that we have water, that we have electricity, that we have roads, because before that we had 'almost nothing! When the turks began to 'raise their heads' for secession of territories, the borders were open and anyone who wanted could move to Turkey. But when they saw how badly they were treated by their 'brothers in blood' many turks returned back home. As above, we have not rejected the Soviets, in fact at the first "pro-democracy" protests, people wanted more socialism. Now we are members of NATO and the EU, but no one askd us if we wanted it or not, there was no referendum! I don't know what these "executions by the NKVD" are, maybe you mean the so called People's Court, which was held at the insistence of America and UK. The same courts existed in all countries occupied be Germany during WWII!

I love Warsaw, but of course better in the summer.

Russians can live in Poland too..I even know 1 or 2 and their Polish is not as good as mine but they manage. RUSSIA-phobic is not always RUSSIAN-phobic. Poland stands for democracy and freedom compared to Russia, Russia stands for invading neighbours and subjugating them, end of story.

The Russian authorities usually don't chase people who make critical videos in English that is for international viewers, because most of Russians don't speak English anyway so it won't have a big influence on the public opinion in Russia. Ruskie pierogi means actually ruthenian. Some overzealous producers recently renamed them to ukrainian, which is idiotic. Just yesterday, while shopping, I saw these "Ukrainian" dumplings and I said: Oh, there are no Ruthenian dumplings, so thank you! Generally, I got the impression that you consider Poles to be russophobic based on official statistics, without having encountered any manifestations of hostility towards Russians. The behavior of hotel staff in Warsaw probably corresponds to the behavior of staff in Moscow hotels towards Russians from Zamkadye.

A phobia is an exaggerated, irrational fear. Poland and Poles in the past experienced cruel and brutal relations from Russia, deportations, Gulags, prisons, genocide, Katyn Massacre. Poles have the right to feel a certain distance from Russia; of course, wonderful and aware Russians are always welcome and well treated in Poland. Slava Ukraine... The last Russian troops left Poland in 1993, so this is not history, but still living memories.

I often truly enjoy watching your videos as you travel from either within Russia or other countries. They generally are uplifting, informative and positive. I found this video to be unfortunate in its thumbnail description as after watching it twice, you clearly had a positive experience traveling there in Poland or specifically in Warsaw. In this video you actually did not encounter any polish or Ukrainian citizens that were angry or agitated with you in being a Russian citizen. In fact it was the opposite, people there were friendly and magnanimous in their interactions with you…no negativity or nastiness. Yes, there are often arrogant people we all encounter on any given day in this world as you point out either in Warsaw or Moscow too! I believe that you may have been tired or jet lagged in running around and having unfortunately forfeited non-refundable money whether it be for airlines or hotels reservations. Things like this happen from time to time and we travelers need to accept these occasions at time and keep moving forward. By the way, I never fear once for you being completely without financial resources as your fiancée will of course always have you back just as I do for my fiancée who lives in Brazil. She has nothing to fear financially speaking as I’m a phone call away from her! I would suggest that sometime in the future when you’re rested and relaxed that you rewatch this video with open minded thoughtfulness. I believe that you will find that your own internalized perspective has possibly colored your outlook of Poland and in particular while visiting Warsaw. Remember these initial feelings you had were internalized and possibly based on your own expectations or predetermined beliefs or thinking in traveling to Poland. I only heard that you encountered generally happy, warm and welcoming people either polish or Ukrainian who treated you with respect, kindness and in a hospitable manner. Your presentation in this video clearly shows this. How about the kindness of the two men who gifted you with a cheesecake…such a wonderful gesture and surprise to you! Finally, you did accomplish your mission in securing your fiancée visa…congratulations! I think if I had to make the “very circuitous trip” that you did to travel from St. Petersburg to Warsaw I would likely be a bit tired, with frayed internal feelings or emotions too! I believe that everyday Polish or Ukrainians citizens don’t hate Russians…they more than likely hate Putin, the Russian government and its military. Safe travels to you! 😊

Watching expats on you tube from North America and elsewhere who now live in Russia, it is not a bad place as the west makes it out to be. It is worth the visit. Talking with Russian friends who live in Canada who plan on moving back to Russia makes me feel that Russia is OK.

You'll be tolerated in Poland as long as you don't support Russian imperialism and the war in Ukraine. If you do that publicly, I think that the Ukrainians who live here will be the first ones to teach you a lesson. And we, Poles will be right behind them. Phobia is an irrational fear, and our dislike of Russia is VERY rational. You guys have been harassing our Central and Eastern Europe for too long.

Hmmm, Swieta, it's as if you're a bit disappointed not to have experienced any noteworthy instances of blunt Russophobia in our country. To put it briefly (as there are many angles and lots of stuff to this topic): why would a guest (visitor) who is a regular individual, friendly (or minding their own business at the very least) and not causing any troubles bother us? Why should we be inhospitable by default? We're not like that. Also, good looks translate well in every country (😉) and your cheesecake story confirms that. Warsaw is a whole another animal (as in prettier) when it all gets full green in mid-spring and stays so during summer. And it offers lots of things for just about anyone, be it leisure, all sorts of activities, cultural events or shopping. If you’re into medieval stuff (as in late-medieval architecture and likewise-themed museums) then Toruń is the place to hit on your way from Warsaw to Trójmiasto (or the Tri-City: Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia). The Old and New Towns of Toruń are remarkable. If you’re a skier the place to go in winter is our part of the Tatras. The added bonus is that you can enjoy the folklore of our highlanders (or the „Górale”) there. If you and your posse can sail, you may be interested in visiting the Mazury region (or Masuria) in summer: you can rent a sailboat and sail the interconnected lakes there for a few days. In addition to having good time and getting a nice tan you’ll enjoy some gorgeous scenery there (it’s a heavily forested and non-industrialized area).

I experimented with that (and with no risk for me). There is a transit agreement between Russia and Lithuania: Lithuania MUST allow Russians transit from Kaliningrad to Moscow. If one has a car: no problem. The car navigation system is... going to be "damaged" and you land up crossing the Suwalki gap "by accident". To make sure, I asked Polish police, what would they do if my car would have Russian plates. "As long as you have Schengen visa: nothing, you will be fine". Read the fine print: Poland does not allow Russians to enter from Kaliningrad DIRECTLY (and here we have one little funny thing: they prohibit American citizens without possibility to review the decision, but the Russian citizens can appeal to the most senior border guard of the shift. I know that precisely because we made even more experiments). Anyway, this entire thing is as insane as possible and with little diligence easy to break. But 99% of the Russians are afraid and can't read English between the line. And even if they would, they have no courage to confront the Polish or Lithuanian authorities directly. But having an American and a EU passport in the pocket helps!

It was Russia(Soviet Union) who was responsible for dividing the Poland into two parts along with Germany in 1939.

17:50 about Pierogi. I don't know if you were ever been into a "Bar Mleczny" but since the arrival of refugees most of the cooks I saw were ukranian women, so the pierogi were different than used to just two years ago, now are bigger and "ukranian style".

Also, there are "Russ Pierogies " not Russian (nothing to do with Moscow )- but come from "Red Russ" after added to Poland, by "Kazimierz the Great" today Volhyn/Lwow regions. So definitely more connected with Ukraine.

@@BurninVinyl Exactly. Not even ingredients are 100% correct. You do not need vinegar. Carrots are debatable, but OK. You will need boiled eggs and some sort of meat. And fresh cucumbers as well. The bastardized "Olivier" (this is how it is called in Russia) needs some sort of sausage, but people strongly prefer chicken meat. Than it is called "Stolichny" salad. I may try salmon next time, but first time heard about it. Vinegar is never used. The quality of mayo is very important. Ideally one should make it at home. If not, buy French or from former USSR. A random from grocery store (outside of France or former USSR) won't do any good.

Yes, Krakow is much nicer. Also St. Petersburg is the nicest city in Russia and probably close to the same level as Vienna or Prague.

I was very lucky to be born in Western Europe (Belgium) but I remember the cold war (I'm 65 now) and I understand very well the reaction of central and eastern european countries who had to live under the joke of the USSR. With the current situation it is even strange that Russians are allowed to travel in EU countries, because of the hybrid war of Russia against the West, including spying, cyber attacks and disinformation.

With the bleach not only the hair may be gone ... As if she hadn't heard ab. the EU sanctions for Russia due to the Russia's brutal war of aggression against Ukraine. Of course, what Poles think about Russians, especially ab. the Russian government and its propaganda, not ab. all the Russians as a nation - it is Russorealism - not Russophobia. Phobia is defined as hatred that is irrational. The Poles are absolutely rational in their judgment about Russians based on historical facts. So, definitely not a phobia - just realism.
