FAREWELL CANDLESTICK: Visiting San Francisco's Legendary Stadium Site 10 Years Later!

Спорт

The last San Francisco 49ers game at Candlestick Park was 10 years ago.
Let's revisit the site of so many championship teams and hall of famers on the south end of San Francisco. Candlestick was one of the most storied stadiums in all of sports.
Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Will Clark, Juan Marichal, John Madden, Kruk & Kuip, Vin Scully, Terrell Owens, Frank Gore, The Beatles and so many more built their legacies right here at the former site of Candlestick Park.
From legendary 49ers and Giants games to behind the scenes tours, we'll talk about the sports history and our personal memories.
Shoutout all my friends & fam with me in these memories, you guys mean the world to me.
"Candlestick Park, located in San Francisco, California, opened in 1960 as the home stadium for the San Francisco Giants baseball team. Originally named "Candlestick Park" due to its location on Candlestick Point, it later became known simply as "The 'Stick." The park gained notoriety for its challenging weather conditions, including strong winds and fog, which made it a unique and often difficult venue for both players and spectators.
In addition to baseball, Candlestick Park also hosted football games, primarily serving as the home stadium for the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL from 1971 to 2013. The stadium witnessed several historic sporting events, including the Beatles' final full concert in 1966 and the 1989 World Series, famously interrupted by the Loma Prieta earthquake.
Candlestick Park underwent renovations and upgrades over the years, but by the late 2000s, its aging infrastructure and facilities led to discussions about building a new stadium. In 2013, both the Giants and the 49ers moved to new venues, marking the end of an era for Candlestick Park. The stadium was demolished in 2015, making way for a retail and housing development called Candlestick Point. Despite its challenges, Candlestick Park holds a significant place in the history of San Francisco sports and entertainment."

I was 7 years old and was dejected. Later that year the Giants would beat the Cubs in the 1989 NLCS 4 games to 1. After the final event held at the Stick (Paul McCartney’s concert) my wife ran down to the field and pulled up a chunk of the grass for me (a lifelong Niners fan and former season ticket holder). We brought it back to our house in Portland where we planted it in a large flower pot. The grass still lives to this day. Long live the Stick, and go Niners!

My wife arranged a tour the day after the Carolina game in 2013 to tour the stick. It was the most memorable vacation ill ever have. My kids got to sit in the seats of the greats in the locker room. My 3 month old got to crawl on the field. My wife also procured some grass from the field. Everyone on tour took turns recreating The Catch in the same spot. I got to say a proper goodbye to the place which held so many of my happy childhood memories. Wifes are great. So many great memories. I went to the last Giants game there before they moved home plate to PacBell Park. I also went to the last ever playoff game just like you when Kaepernick ran wild over the Packers. You did a hell of a job getting so many great clips from so many great sporting events that took place at the Stick. The Niners should still be playing there to this day. Levi’s will never be the Stick. It’s sad they couldn’t even build anything there and that place has stayed vacant for years. Not even any statues or landmarks. What a shame. I have a piece of asphalt from Fremont Drag Strip off Durham Rd. and a piece of concrete from Winterland Ballroom (Post and Steiner S.F.) when it was being torn down in 1985. I've also been to Pearl Harbor 35 years after Japanese planes were bombing it in 1976..been to many Civil War battlefields back east...Custer's Last Stand...and many other places thinking "wow...that actually happened right here!" It's a mindblower to see your video of what's left of Candlestick Park...all that happened there...almost like ghosts are still running around. BTW...I commented on your video when you visited Agnew State Hospital. I installed many of the 1 ft. square ceiling tiles laying all over the floor there. That brought back memories, too!

You probably are a bit young to recall Winterland Ballroom. It opened in 1928 as an ice-skating arena. Rock promoter Bill Graham began having concerts there 9/23/1966 and ended 12/31/1978 with a capacity of 5,400. There were 611 (give or take a couple) concerts there during that time. I went to 11 shows beginning in 1970. I have a complete list of all the concerts...day, year, and performers. Back in the day it was typical to see three bands (sometimes four) in one show. Almost every band except Elvis and the Beatles performed there...including Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Doors, Led Zeppelin, Cream, on and on and on! What sits there now at Post & Steiner (S.F.) are apartments. I've heard there is a plaque in the lobby commemorating the site was where Winterland stood. I happen to be in the city when the wrecking ball was knocking it down. That's how I picked up a piece of concrete from one of the walls. Lots of rock history happened there! @@vvarietyshow

Luckily, the Cow Palace survived being demolished. It opened in 1941 and has hosted thousands and thousands of concerts, events, sports, shows...you name it. The Beatles played there two times in '64 & '65 and the venue also has a very lengthy list of concerts that happened there. I HATED the 49ers growing up I was a huge Cowboys fan. The Catch Number 1 broke my 10 year old heart. It pissed me off that the Cowboys let it happen , so I stopped liking them too. And The Stick is where it happened, so I hated that place too. Who knew , decades later, I would move to Central CA, get to know the Bay Area, and become a 49ers fan. But this tribute was absolutely amazing. My hate has turned to love. The Bay Area is magical. And you brought The Stick to life. I appreciate this so much.

Went to many many giants games, only one niners, but my all time favorite memory was being up near that top concrete on opening day 93 watching Barry Bonds hit his first homer as a Giant with my dad. The lead up to that day was crazy with the Giants almost going to Florida only to be saved last minute. My dad talking all post season about how amazing it would be if we picked up Bonds but how unlikely it would be, he still had that glimmer of hope in his eye though. Then sure enough his wish came true and we somehow got tickets to see his first game and our team we almost lost. I remember it was Bond's first at bat, I could swear it seemed like the first pitch but we could never remember correctly, and he just blasted one and the place went nuts. My dad with a huge grin on his face looked down at me between high fives and said, "This is a sign of things to come." We had no idea at the time how right he was going to be about that.

I have a lot of fond memories of seeing the Giants play in 1997 aka the Worst to First season. The only time I ever saw the Giants play there. Fantastic video! My first visits to Candlestick were in the early ‘70s to watch the 49ers. Berkeley Farms had a “Junior 49er” ticket giveaway program for kids and I was lucky to win them several times. The funny thing was the section where the seats were located, you could only see about 2/3 of the field. I didn’t care, it was fun seeing John Brodie, Gene Washington and all the legendary players of the time. They were like superheroes to me with the uniforms and helmets. The only negative is that we always seemed to be playing the Rams, and Roman Gabriel and company would always beat us. Later when I grew up, I was lucky to get season tickets. Stopped being a season ticket holder when they moved to Santa Clara. So many great memories of Niners and Giants games. Wish I could share my video of the last Niners game played at the Stick - fireworks, “When the Lights Go Down in The City”…😢. Thanks so much for putting this video together!

I grew up going every home game til I enlisted after 9/11 and deployed twice to Iraq in over 8yrs in the Army. Attended Super Bowl XIX when I was 11yrs old, sat 5 rows up behind the 49ers bench on about the 44yrd line. My brother and I used to crawl on top of the dugout when the Niners ran onto the field from the locker room, and #88 Jesse Solomon was the first player to slap my hand as the squad ran by...Watchin my Dad, who we lost recently, screaming when it was Montana-to-Rice and Ronnie Lott knock RB's silly when hit em are my fondest memories...Go NINERS

Lets not forget the "OOOH Licks" that Lott delivered every time he stepped on this ground. Or Kaepernick rushing around defenses when they had no answers for him. Montana surgically moving the chains like a general. Rice making circus catches, causing our crowd to loose their sh*t... Young running around knocking down camara guys after finally spanking those guys. I always remember driving up through the hood, looking for parking, the walk, and finally going up the escalators. But I will miss the most is the tailgating with my Uncle and his friends before and after games and like your self we became Kings of the dirt lot every time we feasted. @@vvarietyshow - It is disgusting that after 10 years, nothing has been done to replace the spot. Doesn't Kezar stadium still exist? It is sad that a grass Bill Walsh field at Candle stick point doesn't still exist to run and throw the ball around in. I was lucky to go once, the first week back after 9/11, and have front row tickets with my dad to watch the 49ers host the Rams. I didn't grow up in wealth and only had that one chance. We lived north of Sacramento, so that moment will love with me forever. I don't even live in the USA,but what I wouldn't give to be able to step on the grass of a park where that field once stood and toss the ball around before I die. I hope they develop that area.

I remember watching Giants and 49er games here. Man so many memories! Gotta represent, still got my 49er Deion Sanders jersey, and my burgundy Jerry Rice Starter jersey! Seeing your video makes me happy and sad. Thank you for making this, thank you for sharing this.

As a Seahawks fan some of the best games in the Hawks-49ers rivalry were at the Stick all of the early 2010’s were great I actually can’t believe it’s been 10 years

I am from the Detroit area. I really miss old Tiger Stadium. The unique smell it had when you first walked in, the bleacher creatures, the right field upper deck over hung the field. I also miss hearing the buzzing of the light towers at night games, you could get the stadium literally shaking when everyone would stomp their feet, the center field was 440 feet deep with the flag pole in play. Fans would really get an amazing wave going both upper and lower decks at the same time and sometimes the upper and lower deck wave would go opposite way. Old Tiger stadium was just the best. I loved that place!

If I could go back in time to see lost ballparks, Tigers Stadium would be in my top 5. To me it just perfectly encapsulated it's era. The big balconies with support poles, bright paint, close quarters.

Dope video man. I love the historical context you provided and seeing what it means to you. Captures the way we are all so attached to our local sporting venues, especially those that are no longer standing but alive in our hearts and memories. Learning about old stadiums is a favorite topic of mine. Glad I found this video.

As a fellow 49ers and Giants fan and a fellow Bay Area I've always wanted to go to the Candlestick Park aka the stick and I definitely wish I went to the last game at the stick definitely remember the 89 quake cuz I was in middle school around the time Quake hit and to think of it thank God the World Series happened at the time it did cuz if it wasn't for the World Series a lot more people would have died from the quick cuz it would have been rush hour around the time the Quake hit even though I didn't go to any of the games at Candlestick it will always be in my heart if they do something to Candlestick Point let's just hope they do more than a plaque for the 49ers and Giants home field farewell to the Candlestick Park you will always be forever in our hearts

Gotta admit.... i haven't watched a video about a point of my childhood that made me tear up like this. This was a great video!!! I have too many gret memories of the Stick and 49ers games and a few Giants games. Great job with this video. I only have 1 correction for you. The Earthquake in 89 happened just before Game 3, not Game 1. You are right, and I said it years ago when they were going to leave the stick, this is one of the Meccas for the NFL. I miss it too. Miss it so much, but Levi is starting to get that vibe and we must never forget our historic past and bring it along with us to Levi. Levi in my books is now Candlestick South. 😃

I lived in Union City from 1991 to 1993, and worked in Santa Clara about 2 blocks from the 49ers practice field, I was walking across the street and a bad ass car had Flash-80 on it, I looked closer and yes it was Jerry Rice….Candlestick was my first Pro Baseball and Football game….My first pro Football game was the 1992 game between The Bills & 49ers (No Punts and over a 1,000 yards of Offense). I became a fan of the 49ers… Great Memories!!! Great job on this upload…..

I’ve been a Giants and 49’ers fan since 1970.My mom and dad took me to my first Giants game and I couldn’t wait to see the players who I had watched on tv and when I opened the doors to get to our seats I saw the playing field and players warming up and was mesmerized by how everything looked to me as a 10 year old kid. Will never forget that day and all the other games I attended over the years.Like you I have so many great memories of Candlestick and watching your video it really takes you back in time.Candlestick Park may be gone but the memory’s and good times I had there will be with me till my last breath.
