Visiting Kuala Lumpur in 1979 (4)

Before leaving for Vienna the Austian couple visits Kuala Lumpur and some of their monuments in 1979. I visited the Malaysian capital in 1961. I wonder if important changes took already place in those 18 years.

Dulu.....we cover each others back. Come to think of it, mmg sedih tgk bangsa Malaysia skrg. Budak2 skrg tak dpt menikmati keindahan membesar, bermain bersama dan lepak n mkan2 bersama. Mgkin skrg pun ada yg mkn minum dan lepak sama tapi tak mcm dulu....../ we never had any reservations about races....in fact we can make fun of each other tanpa perlu risau dia ni melayu lah, dia ni India lah atau dia ni cina lah.... We were TRULY one Malaysian masa tu...

So sarapan kat rumah dia, lunch kat rumah dia and sometimes dinner pun kat rumah dia jugak. Hahaha. Tak pernah tanya pun ini halal ke tak, itu halal ke tak sbb dia mmg dah tahu. Raya turn dorg pulak dtg umah pagi petang. Anak dorg dgn saya sama2 main bola tiap2 ptg. So ur dad mmg tau persahabatan org2 dulu.

It was beautiful and peaceful then. I remember visiting KL/Singapore during that era a few times, my dad was a pilot for a British Airline so we had flying privileges to see the world for less. 40 years on I am a senior captain for British Airways on 380 fleet seeing the world from a completely different point of view. I take my family around places 4/5 times a year and when I visit some of the old shops in different towns I mention them that during early 80’s you were like this and that and they get very emotional specially the old owners. The pace the world is changing is rather alarming, only time will decide the fate. One thing I must admit though that back then the society was much more tolerant and we had genuine courtesy and respect for each other.

It would be 5 cents, I think and the portions would be huge. When I was in primary school back in the 1990s, a plate of nasi lemak was 20 cents, 10 cents if you get the half portions. At the end of my primary school years in 1995-1996, a plate of nasi lemak cost 30 cents and if you wanted a bigger portion, you'd pay 50 cents. Well, this was my school in Subang Jaya area, some places may be cheaper.

viknes actually for me, i dont mind about people coming here for work. we know we lack of manpower in certain areas. but what happened today is totally out of control. this suppose labour/manpower is not doing what they allowed but beyond that they have venture into entrepreneurship and business ownership which is wrong. i dont mind about several restaurant because to cater their needs but what you see at chow kit, bukit bintang, petaling street not to mention other part and city such as pasar borong all have been conquered at most. it just insane. i dont know where you got your fact about hardworking banglas. i had ventured into several small business before and have experienced as a small contractor in electrical and some small construction. i know how these banglas mentality and their working etiquette. maybe there are some banglas who really hardworking as you said but in my experience majority is totally opposite. one thing they good at is finding excuse and to "jilat" the boss. and it is logic that whoever going overseas to work normally yes we got to work our sock out. it happened everywhere and if we go to other country, of course we have to be more hardworking than we were in malaysia because that the mentality once you set your objective and you will not get the special and treatment as a local. its logic.

Joe TechNerd are you malaysian? have you been to malaysia? if you live here then you know what i am talking about. there are many type of foreigner in malaysia. i am not talking about tourist and visitors although there are some cases who using the tourist visa for work and overstayed. i just want to tell about foreign labour in malaysia. some are legal while mostly are illegal(no passport coming thru rat hole, expired permit, using tourist/student visa). many of them working illegal and some trying doing business because can get job. raid by officers is done quite regular but the also have insiders, the do pay lot to some officers. moreover if you see all detention camp in malaysia all overcrowded. what i saw during past year is a significant reduce of african coming. last time many of african coming and misuse their student but not studying and their crime rate is very high.
