This CNY video of Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur has brought back fond memories of my childhood days. I was born in 1950 in Petaling Street. The shops like Yat Hing (selling household items, pots and pans), 0:46 Jalan Hang Lekiu (formerly Klyne Street) , 2:39 'Chop Wah Cheong' is along Jalan Hang Lekiu, 3:38 'Wah Hin & Company', 4:38 'Tai Cheong Loong' Those who stayed in Petaling Street in the 1950s will surely remember these familiar names.

Sir, you've mentioned wrongly with regards Jln Lekiu or Klyne Street. The correct street should be Cecil Street or Jln Hang Lekir now. We're formerly a Tenant's together with my Parent's and siblings in one of shop/house at Klyne Street now Jalan Lekiu near St John's Institution. All Chinese Lion Dance activities was conducted around the shops in Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur. You're my senior by 6 years and we shifted to PJ in 1967. Thanks for your sharing. God blessed Also Mr Michael Thank you very much. We're very grateful for sharing this memorable and nostalgic Kuala Lumpur.

For those who said nay, this is d old chinatown in KL. Petaling St was also jokingly called "chee tin kai" or Liars st as they were not known for honesty and still don't, haha. The old funeral parlours were nearby where poorer folks held their wakes on the ground floors and the retired China amahs or "ma chay" who couldn't go home, rented these upper stories and stayed till they passed on from what I was told. I had lived nearby in Pudu or "pun sam par" (1/2 jungle in Cantonese) altho' already developed by then. My grandaunt lived in nearby Kampong Pandan and there was a central collection area there with huge bins to collect the night soil as it was still the bucket system and it stank to high heaven so I knew we were arriving soon. Bukit Bintang was always a busy commercial area and itz fun carnival night on weekends for nearby families. Petaling St also well known for street food but d old cooks are long gone and 1 old man made the best "hup toh so" or (?) walnut cookies unlike those now. This really brings back a lot of old memories.

Behind federal hotel were colonial houses. Instead of destroy most heritage in kl. They should have develop kl at the fringe not the proper kl at large. Kl is a nostalgic colonial city , bful. @@kokwahtan8577 True and amazingly these old shophouses still around saved by Chinatown becoming a tourist attraction now. The old Central Market was a very popular open air market full of busy trishaw men transporting goods and people but now transformed into a cultural shopping center n worth a visit. About 15 mins towards Pudu was a Tai Wah or Majestic Cinema where we watched the Tarzan and 50-60's HK movies. A local legendary stripper (more tease than obsene) called Rose Chan had a few shows there to the wives' horror and the men's delight. Rumor had it that she went off to d greener Aussie pastures but got booked by the police for her shows! Bukit Bintang too had the old dance halls where girls did so with their paying customers. This childhood era is gone and our children's generation know little of the hardships and poverty then with modern conveniences and their tech toys. Some when asked what one thing they couldn't do without, they replied, "Air con!" when we were lucky to even finish high school. Colleges were only for the smarties on scholarships or rich folks. Much thanks mostly to our missionary schools that my generation became the professional and middle class who are able to provide better for our kids and help develop the country as it is now.

@@yinnc9811 central market is my main argument point of view of how silly , that they demolish all 2 row of colonial shop houses at frontage of central market. My dad works there so i knew the place pretty well. Demolish for a open area car park is the most brainless decision planning . Infact the side of CM was car parking area and too was broad enough for pedestrian strolling and walking . Instead they demolish the shop for car park and the side road, makes narrow for just walking pedestrian! Imagine today, you see hostel, cafe, restaurant, fast food, retailer , pub, in a colonial shop right infront of CM , a nostalgia sight atmosphere. ...etc. the row facing main road had a round arch architecture design at shop frontage. Too bad Malaysia rule by a bunch of simpletons of short sighted stupidity ,people.

@@kokwahtan8577 Money talks as they must have planned for the CM and itz carpark to bring in good business. The ones in Petaling St are so run down that itz a miracle they are still standing and a huge firetrap as the wiring must be so old. Nobody seems to be interested to renovate them as happened in Penang, Melacca and S'pore. I am really surprised that this area has not been bought up for development all these yrs as it is in the heart of old KL.

Check out Petaling St in KL, ilz d old Chinatown and now pretty run down but still a tourist attraction. Furthur on down the intersection towards the PNB bldg now being built, were a row of cheap funeral houses of old where bodies were laid overnight for mourning before burial. No posh Nirvana complex then. I still recalled a mother weeping over her dead son who was killed when his bike hit a cow on the road as no helmet law then. Each family had their own section in the same hall. A relative's body was next to his when my mom asked the woman and it was her only son just started working to help out financially. How sad and hardly any visitors all night to donate "pak kam" or money to help out with their funeral expenses. My mom did as they were poorly off and the lady cried "till no tears flow" as the saying goes. Thatz why I remembered it till this day.

@@brandonwoo8299 develop the fringe , and heritage owners gave priviledge citizens to have govt; projects bnesses, with a value scale of their properties. So KL, will be world renowned as a city of both nostalgic AND modernization. A city of both world will strike the eyes of the world . Europe as example. Imagine todays Bangsar, Pj, Subang is the South Corridors of New KL. Today's, Taman Maluri, Pandan Area , etc is the West Corridor of new KL. Todays Damansara Height , Kiara, Kepong, Segambut till Selayang the North Corridor of new KL. All this Corridors connected by bus and eventually by MRT in the 80s. Central KL of today, should reserve, only to demolish the wooden houses slum areas and developed . Roads at Kl centre are narrow due to Early 20th cent; development, as such connect by Tram( like Melbourne/ Hongkong) . In the 50s & 60s , KL had ample land for such plan. They can't vision a City of both world , nostalgia and modernization, thats truly magnificient. We had ample flat land , unlike Japan Tokyo, witj too many hills and mountains, New york which separated by water ways by river and ocean bays. Spore and HK too small. Yes they can't keep the heritage.!! The above plan n vision, will apply to all states in Msia. We will have 13 Singapore in Msia!!! Sorry, they don't have futuristic smart vision. Simple Straight Shallow mind. !!!

@@kokwahtan8577 our city need to be centralise..ppl need to stay in city not within city. Look at kl nowadays there is no crowd compare to other major city just because ppl is not there. And if people is not staying in the city square its hard to develope effecient tranaportation and everyone will create jam by driving into the city to work. I dont realy agree with with segragating city into north, south and east simply because we dont have that population.
