It was always the rich culture of the place that stunned me, visually, emotionally and physically! I cannot believe that the WEST (and POLAND) is so stupid to think that it can destroy the Russian Civilisation!

In the US and UK there is widespread public boycott of everything Russian. In Austria world-leading Russian conductors and opera singers have been fired from their posts. Ministers of Culture in Lithuania and Ukraine both note that Russian culture is - just like oil - a dangerous weapon and should or must be sanctioned! The idea is that censorship and restriction of contacts can help prevent infection from spreading and corrupting. Adroitness is needed when embarking on war. So goodbye - No more Tchaikovsky, Nutcracker Suite or Russian Orthodox Church for that matter!

Happy B-day Ania! Enjoy your roaming through the one most beautiful and dear to my heart city! My family lived in StPetersburg since its foundation in 1703. This city is called the Northern Venice for 2 reasons: many bridges (350) connect numerous islands, forming one city; most of buildings in the center were designed by Italian architects. But StPete is very unique. I hope you will see the beauty of it even in the winter. I used to walk through the whole city, from the south to another side of Neva river on coldest days and admire the crisp and dreamlike beauty of it. Enjoy your stay in StPete, Ania !

Dear Ania thanks so much for your lovely presentation of some of the highlights of the “Venice of the North” - its landscapes, architecture and design. Like many people living “next door” in Finland, I have friends in Russia and am familiar with St. Petersburg. By the time of the Belle Epoque at the turn of the century there was a great cultural efflorescense in both Russia and the Grand Duchy of Finland. In fact, at the time the second largest city in terms of Finnish population was (after Helsinki) St. Petersburg! My father as a small boy used to collect mushrooms on the Karelian Isthmus (in Finland) and take them and sell them to the Winter Palace’s (Finnish) kitchen staff. Many of the Fabergé jewellery firm’s master designers and artisans were Finns. Today in harmony with the enlightened policies and script from the West, our Govt. does its best to build a new Iron curtain and to eliminate all contacts and cooperation with Russia, St. Petersburg included. Of course, that has a price and consequences also for us in Finland and the West.

@@user-kk1jv7rs9m Thanks Evg. but there is no need to argue. Translation and communication outside of one's native language can be difficult. I have not talked about the prehistory of the St. Petersburg region, nor about the indigenous Baltic-Finnish population living there at that time, nor about the period of the Swedish Empire and the “Swedish” city and fortress of Nyen. It was conquered by Peter the Great, after which it flourished and was renamed St. Petersburg. I just referred to the DEMOGRAPHIC CURIOSITY - if you will - that more than 100 years ago there were more Finns living in St. Petersburg than in any city in Finland except Helsinki. At that time, the Finns, Ingrians, etc. of course were a minority in the Russian city.

if that would be your first Nutcracker, then I just envy you )) the music is totally fantastic and the Mariinsky is known with its classical choreography of this ballet dated mid of 30-s while the Bolshoy plays a later and shorter version (only in two parts) adopted in late 60-s. There is a lasting public discussion which performance is better but in anyway I hope you would catch this magic sense of the Christmas miracle. Happy birthday!

There's no discussion: Bolshoi version is better of course 😁 I don't want to underestimate Kirovsky and Vainonen's talent, but Grigorovich is an absolute genius and his version is more dynamic. But please don't say this to people in St.Pete. There is an undergoing hidden competition between the two capitals and St.Pete pretends to keep its leading benchmarks in all arts)) And concerning the stage, I guess the Nutcracker will be played on the new stage.

You couldn’t have a more ideal birthday present walking through St. Petersburg. Word are simply not strong enough to describe the culture, the place and the people. Russia is majestic.

Thank you for showing us your beautiful shows. As you are now in St. Petersburg I would like to tell you about this KZread channel, Baklykov Live. I recently found this ,Sergey the guy who runs the channel from St. Petersburg shows people all about the beauty of Russia and Russian life. He presents this all in English. He is a very pleasant, humorous , gentle person, on the last show I saw he invited the audience of You Tube for New Year celebration at home with his family. Check it out Ania, Happy Russian Christmas, lots of love to you!

Well done! Poor thing the camera can not show even a fraction of it's beauty. Say, 2:18, this cigarette cases are not just blue. They are covered with multiply layers of translucent enamel. When you change an angle, it's look slightly changes. Like holographic stickers, but in royally calm manner. I googled it, and even 4k videos have a hard time showing the effect. But, when you look it in person - it's stunning! Man, I wish I could have one - especially, aqua blue and ruby series. All of you people, you should visit the Faberge museum!!! He was not royal best jeweller in words only.
