Virtua Cop Documentary | Reviewing Every U.S. Saturn Game | Episode 31 of 246

Patreon: / pandamoniumnick
Ko-fi: ko-fi.com/pandamoniumnick
This is a journey through time analyzing the history of Virtua Cop, its Saturn port, and revelations on why Sega's 5th gen console performed the way it did. You will see source material that you cannot find anywhere else - woven into a tale straight from the trenches of 90's video game development.
Please note the chapters in this video. If you think sitting through a 4+ hour video sounds like too much of a task, then I encourage you to watch the chapters by themselves over time, like you would episodes of a TV show. Think of this like a streaming service dropping an entire season of a show all at once. Marathon it if you want, but don't feel like you must.
This was not a solo project. While it is true that I wrote and edited this 4+ hour piece, it would not be close to half of what it is without SamIAm and the tremendous help from other friends across the Saturn community. SamIAm is the translator working on the Princess Crown English patch (yes, he is still working on it). He translated a massive amount of Japanese source material for this video. Pimpeaux contributed mountains of her time to release date research for the overall series, sales data, and other assets used throughout. My partners with SHIRO! Media Group lent their time to QA, and their voices to some magazine interviews. Other voice overs were provided by the likes of SlappyBag9, Jordan Ryan of GBATemp, Greg Lacquerware, and Tit0 from Hall of Game. The SHIRO! crew consists of myself, Patrick Traynor, David Lee (SaturnDave), Peter Malek and Ben Wallace.
Homebrew developers XL2 and TrekkiesUnite118 helped me with understanding the inner machinations of SGL and proofreading parts of my script that go over technical details.
SHIRO! also lent their skills and connections for past interviews with Tom Kalinske, Chuck Tolman, and Paul Kerchen. I must also thank 90's devs Robert Leyland, Chris Kirby and Steve Snake, along with Jarrod Nichol of Project COE.
Random Stuff and May Rosencratz allowed me to use some of their original music for parts of this video. Random even made a couple of tracks just for this episode. Big thanks to both of you.
As for the others who took part... Well... Watch the video and find out who they are. :)
I extend my most heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to this project, and to all who have supported me over the years. Be it a financial contribution, shoutout, or kind message - you all mean a lot and continue to motivate me to carry on this passion project. Thank you for watching. Sorry for taking so long.
POST UPLOAD NOTES: Turns out the M2 Emulator I use (to play the arcade original) fakes transparencies instead of displaying mesh graphics. There is a way to turn this off, so I will be doing that in future videos.
DISCLAIMER: Virtua Cop is a 1994 arcade game in which the player assumes the role of a police officer, shooting several hundred fictitious criminals without question. This video is a journalistic analysis of that specific video game and other works it influenced. Any potential reference to modern United States politics, police brutality or the debate on western law enforcement reform is purely coincidental.

    Thank you all for watching. Sorry it took so long. :) SamIAm did some incredible work with translation efforts and being THE ultimate connection to Japan for my channel. I cannot thank him enough. This doc would not be what it is without his help. I really gave this all the energy I could put into an episode of PandaMonium. People often talk about how I'm outdoing the previous episode. In terms of sheer scope, I do not know if I will outdo this one, at least not any time soon. The length of this video is also something you won't see terribly often. Not sure if I can vamp this long about Fifa Soccer 96, for example. But I will always put as extreme of an effort as I can into the research and information gathering moving forward. As for the Virtua Cop episode, I hope you are all able to enjoy this microcosm of Saturn history. The video is not monetized. If you’re getting a million ads, it’s because of KZread.

Your vids really are a window into our glory years of gaming - days of SEGA vs. Nintendo vs. Sony, days of the Wild West of developing, days of the first polygons, and of blue, blue skies. The message towards the end regarding how SEGA's story sadly panned out but we can still live in their brief glory moments any time we load up one of their old games, ...that gave me genuine goosebumps. Maybe it was just the way you edited it and delivered the line, but that really got me. Blue skies, forever ~ The amount of love, dedication and effort you put into these videos is insane, my man. It might start to sound like a copy/paste response but i sincerely mean this when i say it - thank you for all your hard work. Regarding the long hours of work, I am a software engineer and I've been doing this for 20 years. Things are different now that I'm married with children, but I remember those early days when I was single. For those of us that love this work, you don't mind the long days and even sometimes volunteer them because this profession can feel like a hobby you get paid to do. I'm not supporting that companies should exploit their workers, but I do think there's another side to the coin. Most engineers, especially young ones, can become hyper-focused on their work because they have few, outside-work responsibilities plus they love what they are doing. The way these guys speak about this project sounds like me and some of the early work I was doing in my career, and I was doing business development and not working for a rad company like SEGA.

    As a Portuguese person can confirm: that show was a huge success, and the Saturn was the console most people seemed to had (in terms of all the kids I knew and/or were friends with, I can very much remember that not even a handful of them had a Playstation or even any Nintendo Console that wasn't a Game Boy). This essentially led to me and my brother having a "library" of over 80 games bought off of the local shop - most of them we actually could just "rent" before buying. It also helped that the Saturn games were, for the most part, cheaper than the PS1's. I remember that the most expensive games we bought were at the time Dragon Force and Shining Force 3, at 10.990 and 11.990 Escudos in 1997 and 1998, respectively, (the equivalent to 55.99 and 59.99 EUR, before Portugal officially adopted the Euro as the main currency in Jan. 2002). There were also many videogame related shows on Fridays talking about new releases, "cheats", "interviews", reviews, etc. At first, a Specific Show that used to air on SIC (Independent Television Group) called "Templo dos Jogos" (Lit. translated to "The Temple of Videogames" or "Videogames Temple") used to be heavily SEGA-Centric, until the early 00s where it became, essentially a Playstation showcase, due to Sony's increasing market-share and SEGA of America's poor choices in all accounts being widely known (and the DreamCast then being announced and released). That same TV show ended up "dying quietly" in 2002 - having been moved from "Weekly Friday Morning" to "Overnight Wednesday" slots (the last one I remember watching aired after Midnight, before the channel/broadcast was cut off, as it used to stop broadcast after 1 or 2 am). Plus, an amazing thing that SEGA had pulled off was their amazing marketing: I don't remember the name of the company / guy they hired for it, but the promotional videos were always really, really good and SEGA had actual advertisement slots on Television for a LOT of games in one moderately long slot (think 1 or 2 minute long advert, there are examples of this on youtube!), instead of the 30-45 second "teaser trailers" for one specific game we are now currently seeing. And that paid off *really* well for them for a time.

    Receiving Virtua Cop as 1 of 3 classic Sega titles on Saturn for Christmas was an amazing experience. This documentary drives home the time period, taking me right back to those moments of reading game magazines and going to Toys R Us. The added context and in-depth analysis of the game, development, to the people who made it possible is overwhelmingly incredible. Pacing, editing style, & the added music cast a dream like haze of nostalgia that feels soooo good. Sega Lord X said to check it out and I wasn’t disappointed. This is amazing.

    Awesome work. One note on your appreciation of magazine dates. In Japan, issues are typically dated one month early for monthly magazines (two weeks early for weekly magazines). So in the case of Sega Saturn Magazine, the April 1995 issue was actually released on the first week of March 1995 (and the media contents for the magazine likely provided by Sega in Mid-February). Hence why Panzer Dragoon, released March 10, is on the cover of the "April" issue. Same for the June '95 issue released in the first week of May, etc.

    This just drives home the absolute tragedy of the fifth generation; Sega was the undisputed trailblazer in polygon gaming in the arcade scene, yet didn't make home hardware suited to it. The polygon/textured leap in so many genres was spearheaded by Sega, but their competitors picked up that ball and took it home. Virtua Cop walked so Time Crisis could run.

    Sorry George, but the Saturn was superior in every way. The only thing that held it back was its complicated architecture, an 8 core processor. But make no mistake, once Sega and other companies figured it out. Amazing things happened, with games like virtua cop 1 & 2. And its not just that, but games like panzer Dragoon, guardian heroes, virtual fighter would NEVER have run on PS1 hardware. And that was without the ram cart, but that didn't keep biased reviewers from tearing down the Saturn every chance they got. Or being paid off take your pick. But as a gamer, and collector since 80'', I know my stuff. Granted Sega could have handled the launch better, and marketing as well. But if you've never played one, or owned it. I highly recommend you do. You'll see exactly what I'm talking about, a lot of the games on the Saturn will never be outdone.

    There is so much to say about how incredible this video is; but it's best I don't leave a 1000 word comment just gushing about the incredible amount of research and effort this must have taken to pull off. So I will just list my top 3 favorite things: 3. I honestly didn't know the whole story behind Playstations use of development tools. I always wondered how a newcomer in a flooded console market (3D0 etc) was able to convince so many developers to make games for it. But it just shows that if you think you are going to win, you won't act like you could lose. Sony thought they had a chance but knew they needed to show what it could do. 2: I have been watching this entire series of videos thinking "Weird he hasn't mentioned Nintendo yet." and damn; that introduction was epic. 1: Seeing the developers talk about Death Crimson was absolutely one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I hope one day you cover that game in all its glory (?) also. GET PATREON YOU KNUCKLEHEAD.

I'd rather watch 4.5 hours of this highly informative, entertaining and cleverly (but not overly so) made docu-review than spend my time on Netflix. There's just something wholesome about seeing these devs talk about their old games. You're preserving and correcting a piece of history here. Thank you very, very much.

    I know I posted about the storm and us being okay but I really wanted to talk about this episode. In a word...WOW! This was truly a masterwork you have designed my friend. I can't believe Sega said "You program for Saturn" to a guy who never worked in that capacity before. It's like hey Panda...you're the new lead engineer for NASA's next big space exploration project, chop, chop. What's even crazier is he freaking did it. He knew nothing and I guess faked it till he made it. That is truly incredible and beyond words. What's more we're not talking about working on something small but a prestige title designed to show the Saturn's 3d capabilities and it was an incredible port. I know because I picked it up the day it dropped here in the US for my Saturn. I also snagged Virtua Cop 2 when it dropped as well and wound up getting both games again after I broke my launch Saturn. Basically I bought a second Saturn when Sega was really struggling and it came with 3 games in one cardboard sleeve (both Virtua Cops were in there if I remember correctly). Just an awesome, awesome video! Well done, well done indeed.

    The maturity of the operating system explains now how Shenmue looked so good on the Saturn. By the time it went into production, they were already finished with Virtua Fighter 2 and learned the complexities of the Saturn. I've always felt like Shenmue should have came out on the Saturn instead of the DC, this further validates my reasoning why. Mind blown!

  • @aortaplatinum

    @aortaplatinum

    The major hurdle with Shenmue on Saturn wasn't whether or not the console could handle running it, it was the amount of discs it would have taken. If I remember right, the team estimated it would have taken like 8 discs to fit everything they had in the final Dreamcast game onto the regular CDs used for the Saturn, as opposed to the bigger GD ROMs used with the Dreamcast, not to mention the advancements of compression technology eventually allowing all of Shenmue 2 to fit on a single XBOX disc.

  • @aortaplatinum

    @aortaplatinum

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Por Qué? Like I said, it would have been POSSIBLE, but it would have taken up a ton of discs. As for optimization, that test build footage on the XBOX release of Shenmue 2 was just that, a test build. Since the game relies on precise inputs during the few fights, those parts probably would have been optimized before release. As for the framerate during the rest of the game, Ocarina of Time runs at 20 and is still somehow ranked as the best game of all time on metacritic.

  • @aortaplatinum

    @aortaplatinum

    @Por Qué? I'm talking about the XBOX port of Shenmue 2 released in the US, actually the only way to play Shenmue 2 in the US until the surprisingly decent Shenmue 1 & 2 PC port from a few years ago. I was just commenting on how impressive it was how far optical disc technology had come from needing around 8 discs, to having the larger sequel fit on just 1 disc, in the span of about 5 years.

  • @gloman19

    @gloman19

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@aortaplatinum The 8 disc requirement on Saturn theory you have I agree with. The only question though is if it covers both games. Because from the footage, it looks like they got all the way up until the last chapter of 2 on the Saturn. I could easily see a scenario where Shenmue 1 and 2 get split up on the Saturn similar to how it did on the Dreamcast

    This is, by far, one of the best game-related videos I've watched in a looong time, and I speak as someone with little to no relation to Sega Saturn (as I never had one). Took several evenings but I was totally absorbed. Having the developers talk about their experiences and reuniting them was super cool! I did not know about the battery thing on the controller, but checks out as a crazy sega thing. Man, what a video... Edit: Aaaahh, it even ends with with Craig Stadler singing. Perfect video, I say!

    Fun Fact: There was at one point a 3D Video Card produced by NVIDIA that could allow 1:1 Sega Saturn-like quad rendering in the PC ports of several games, such as Virtua Cop/Virtua Squad, and Panzer Dragoon. This is one of my favorite documentary/retrospective style videos I've watched in a long time. I did not care about Virtua Cop in the slightest before watching this, and yet through history alone I am nonetheless intrigued. Fantastic work getting all of this information together.

    This is crazy! I can't believe how far this series has come and what you've been able to achieve. I can't imagine what it'll be like a few release-months from now, these will go on for days. I was in absolute heaven in 1995 with the PS1 and Saturn. I got Virtua Cop shortly after launch and played it non-stop. I couldn't get enough of it -- the arcade is in my home! I wouldn't have ever imagined then what I am watching now. Best I could get were clips on AOL/bulletin boards, video segments in IE Magazine, and imported magazines from NCSX. Wild.
