Vintage PBA Trash Talk | Chris Barnes vs. Brad Angelo | 2010 PBA Marathon Open

Спорт

In the second match of the 2010 PBA Marathon Open telecast, Brad Angelo rolls a Brooklyn strike in the sixth frame and hoists his arms in celebration. Opponent Chris Barnes doesn't take kindly to it. Commentators Rob Stone and Randy Pedersen add to the debate.
After defeating Barnes, Angelo went on to lose to Pete Weber, who then secured his 35th career PBA Tour title (and first in three years) by defeating Mike Scroggins in the championship match. The Scroggins loss also meant Walter Ray Williams Jr. clinched the 2010 PBA Player of the Year award for a record seventh time.

A Brooklyn strike is no different as a baseball player hitting a weak ground ball or slow pop up over the head of infielders for a single. Then they hit a 105 MPH line drive for an out. Sometimes you nail the pocket and leave a stone 8 or ringing 10. These are things what makes sports great and worth watching.

I think a better analogy is hitting a frame shot in tennis that ends up being a winner, or hitting a drive in golf that bounces off a tree and ends up in the fairway - a Brooklyn in bowling is a rewarded error, whereas a bloop isn't really a "mistake" in the same way

Let me put it into football speak for you, since you seem to not get it. A Brooklyn strike in professional bowling is the equivalent to a player fumbling after a catch, the lineman coming downfield, scooping the ball, and proceeding to run it 60 yards to the end zone to end the game.

Mate, I'm from the UK and I didn't get it either. I had to Google why it's bad and it's because the ball hits the 1 and 2 pins instead of the 1 and 3 (from a right handed player). Instead of ploughing through and getting the strike (as intended) it misses the 3 and the pins bounce around and make a lucky strike. I know that's not too clear but I'm sure another arrogant yank will soon correct me.

Reason is, if you threw the ball and it goes Brooklyn that means you threw a bad shot. These guys throw great shots and get screwed over all the time. It’s hilarious how a Brooklyn gets treated like you did some black magic to get a strike as if no one has thrown a Brooklyn ever before. Competition or not, a strike is a strike. It has to hit the pocket just right, the ball needs the perfect oomph on it, and the pins need to give you the right action. How many times have we seen a perfect ball roll into the pocket and leave a 7 or 10 pin up?

14:32 Randy makes it seem like Brad got right up in Chris's face after he threw that shot. I respect Randy as a bowler, but I can't stand him as an announcer. He raised his arms after a lucky shot so what? Randy and Chris would be like some guys in my sport shot league that will yell at you if you don't give them two lane courtesy, which apparently is also another stupid "unwritten" rule in my league.

Its when you're aiming to hit one side of the group of 10 pins for a strike, you screw up, hit the pins in the intended spot, but on the other side, and get lucky because they all go down. It's not bad, it's just luck. You could say it's bad form to celebrate it, but why not be happy that you were blessed with a strike after messing up?
