Vintage Mac computers at the recycling center

Ғылым және технология

A few old Apple computers I rescued from being recycled: an Apple IIc and Mac PowerBook 5300C that work perfectly, a Mac SE/30 and Performa 6360 that I haven't tested yet, and a Mac Color Classic that has a "Mystic" LC575 logic board upgrade and works fine as well.

Lazy Game Reviews I wonder if we were suggested this video because we viewed yours? :D Anyway, my city says the recycling centers don't allow "scavenging" but I doubt they enforce it much, at least at the drop off locations. It's sad but looks like most thrift stores around me don't seem to bother keeping any old hardware, so it probably all ends up there :(

I went at a recycling center like a year ago, I took 21 inch crt tv for retro games, it's working like it's new. The image quality is excellent, close to a sony trinitron. If I was working there, I would need a very big storage place haha.

RAZERZ Well, I undestand why most crt tv get thrown away. These are obsolete and therefore useless. There are a ton of these things to sale on the used market and nobody buy them. For stuff that have value, many people don't know how much it is worth and just don't have a use for these. And they end up with the trash. If I had to choose to keep only one computer I would definitely keep the most recent one.

The people dropping the items off don't do that. It's the metal scrappers who come around and cut off the cords just to collect the few cents in scrap copper that they're worth.

+doomage101 We legally have to cut the cables when we dispose of items. The problem comes with liability. We write it off, we disable it. We've resorted to shredding devices, as it is cheaper than reselling it. Scrap metal prices are better than finished product recycling... A bit sad really...

One day during my off hours at my High School, my district was throwing out their old CRTVS, monitors, cords, and etc computer stuff. So me and my friend ask our Principle and IT guy about salvaging some stuff for ourselves and so we get permission and after school just start searching the stuff. What we found were 2 old Pentium machines with 3.2 Ghz, along with 2 HP ProBooks 4520's (Around $800 each) without power bricks, just being thrown out. I'm actually using the laptop stated in the story the day of finding it and the shock of the idea that the school just throws out stuff they deem as old is actually quite useful to the average person in my town. (The laptops had Core i5's making it a real steal)

we can't even buy from e waste centers here either. their claim is "they sent it to us for recycling and they money has changed hands so it MUST be shredded". same with scrapped cars. they pay a thousand to take in a car to be crushed and they think the owner would be angry if they saw someone driving what they thought they scrapped on the road again and having someone paying less than 300 dollars.

Wow, my god. Do you have a four-leaf clover up your butt or something? :P A Color Classic!? The rest you took are great finds, too. The fact that the 5300c works fine is a feat in itself - they suffered terrible reliability problems even when new. I don't blame you for not grabbing the 6400 - they were terribly designed. You should have gotten the 5500, though - they are awesome machines. They weigh 47 lb, a little more than an iMac. The G3 all-in-one was the heaviest Mac, at 59 lb. Oh well. Amazing finds across the board. Can't wait to see more.

You should of taken a closer look at that Window fan. It looks like a Bionaire digital window fan. They sell for $65 at Amazon and $80 at Costco. Nice finds though. You also should of taken that "no-name" PC, it was more than likely a custom build. Those (even if old) are usually good! Also those speakers looked like JBL speakers, you should have taken them. They would sound much better than your 3" no name speakers.

Where I live (in an upper-class part of Chicago, even though I'm nowhere near upper-class) Pentium 4's and Core 2 Duo's are impossible to find anywhere, in home use or otherwise. Because he isn't a hoarder. He already has a similar Compaq to the one that he saw there, too. The Apple stuff is also much more valuable, especially those two Macintoshes. If he decides to sell them off, he would easily fetch buyers. Those beige computers aren't very collectable yet, so there is not much incentive in buying those if you're not going to use them. Yeah, it is kinda sad that those are gone now, but you can't just hoard everything either.

I used to have a Powerbook 5300ce. It was Apple's first attempt at slimming down the Powerbook and they had to cut out the CD-ROM drive to make it that compact. The PCMCIA slots have a rather interesting mechanism to eject them; a bimetallic strip holds the ejection spring back, and it's heated to release the spring snd push out the card.

An Apple IIc like the one in your video helped me get my first job out of college! I was babysitting my brother's Apple IIc for the summer, and I decided that since I had it, I might as well put to good use, and so I set up a little job search database in AppleWorks. When an interviewer asked me about my experience with microcomputers, I showed him my database report, and told him about what I had done to set it up. Apparently, I was the first person he had ever interviewed who walked in with something like that, and it left quite an impression. I had a second interview within a few days, and a job offer about a week later. Thanks for the memories! - Mar4k

lol, the macs were the most worthless there, and the video is titled vintage macs with the m as M. All of that stuff is junk, but what's really bad is those macs are not even intel macs and are from a time when apple made fun of pc's for using intel and the hardware of pc (this is true, and I know I'm right), and people copied that. When they no longer could keep up, they dumped their old user base, recompiled the OS for x86 circa 2007. And nothing ran anymore. Stuff like that happens to all computers, but it was the biggest change over... And after they made fun. Then they were hailing intel as part of apple as many were clueless. The only value is sentimental, and if any of those macs happened to be worth a lot to collectors. I could see that, but I don't think they were. And again, the monitors. We have some like that and hate to throw them out, at first. But now it's like to to the point, why on Earth are we even keeping them. So heavy, so square, low resolution, fuzzy, dead. We used to keep some computers in case we needed an extra. But now they are so old, I think they belong at the dump.

  • @Browningate

I recently did a summer job for an organization that was upgrading its computer equipment, and they sold all their stuff (older, but still nice vista-era C2D Dell SFF desktops, 17-19" LCDs, even some nicer workstation-class vista Dell desktop PCs and a couple nicer monitors) by the pound to a recycling place, even though it was all operational because the cost and labor involved with prepping selling it is actually surprisingly high. Now as to whether or not the recycling place just trashed it all or sold it was not clear because they did have us boxing the monitors face-to-face (thereby protecting the panels), but that may have just been to save space.

It's funny that you found a IIC in that pile - some people really do just throw them out not realizing their value. A friend of mine had one in the basement at her house, complete with the monitor and a box of software. Her and her family were packing up to move out, and her grandmother, in a fit of rage, put the IIC and the box of software out on the curb. My friend knew I collect old electronics, so she told me about what had happened, and needless to say, that IIC now lives in *my* basement. So it's a funny coincidence to me that we both rescued IICs from the garbage.

I think it's amazing people use recycling centers to drop off stuff they don't need anymore (as opposed to dumping it in the wild - not sure if that happens where you live, but it sure used to where I do!), so they should definitely be accessible to people like computer geeks who want to pick stuff up and continue using it.

Here in 2020! That Magnavox monitor at 0:50 looks a lot like mine. This model is CM8762 from the back label you just happened to film (thanks for that). I will have to check my monitor's model to be sure. It's broken at the moment & stored in another building for hopefully future repair. I used it for the longest time on my C64, which I still also have. I might return here once I find my Magnavox. I also want that equalizer, heh. As a tech geek myself, I see value in all those things that other people threw away in this video, just like others have commented here. As the saying goes... "One man's trash is another man's treasure." You have to wonder if probably a school, or a company, dumped most of that stuff there, including the Apples, which is why you said you rarely saw that much at one time.
