Vintage Lens Review - Canon 58mm FL f1.2 Breech Lock on a Fuji XT3

Ойын-сауық

I review the Canon FL 58mm f1.2 Vintage Lens on my Fuji XT3 and share my thought s about this really cool and old lens. While the early Canon FL lenses like the 58mm f1.2 FL are known for their low contrast wide open, they give the photographer a look that software can not replicate. These early Canon breechlock lenses are wonderful for the look they produce on modern cameras like the Fuji XT3.

THAT was the best mount ever. If it experienced wear, it just tightened down more. ALWAYS tight, lens to film plane always the same. NO wiggle.

They have this lens at my camera store but I chose the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 AI, Carl Zeis for Nikon F 50mm f/2 Makro-Planar Manual Focus lenses and the Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 D Autofocus lens. Picked up the Leica M Mount Voigtlander Heliar Classic 75mm f/1.8 & the Leica APO Sumicron 90mm f/2 ASPH. I have three adapters that can use the Leica M to Leica L, Nikon F to Leica L and Leica M to Nikon Z. FTZII using the Nikkors on Nikon Z. Two Lleica M Mount lenses to Nikon Z. You can figure ou the rest but I am falling in love with the SL2-S and Zf. Cheers!

I have never seen a Canon camera body that uses the breech lock system in person. I would love to get my hands on one to see, but as of right now, I have not been able to mount to a Canon body... Since my XT3 is not stabilized, I will need to tripod mount it for video. That sounds like a video in the making! Thank you for the idea! 👍📸

I'm a fellow Georgia photographer and also use that lens on my Fuji cameras. I love it as a portrait lens. If shot wide open it is a little soft, but I use Topaz Sharpen AI to sharpen the subject while maintaining the look of the lens. I also find stopping down to f2 sacrifices a little bokeh but really sharpens up the image.

That idea great information! Thank you for sharing it!!! The 58mm is one of the lenses I will keep, just for the character. It just has that look to it that can’t be replicated in post. Your point about stopping down is a really great one too. 👍📸

You have to reset the silver ring prior to installing the mount, so make sure that is done too. Also it might not be seating properly. I have talked with more than one person who either had to modify the adapter slightly to get it to work or returned it and got a different one which worked for them. I would try those next.

what did you pay for this lens ? here in Germany the lens cost about 400 - 600 € . for this price you can get a new Voigtländer 58mm 1.4 Nokton or a Nikkor 50mm 1.2 AIS . I have the canon fd 50mm sc 1.8 ( 10€), it’s really lightweight and the rendering reminds me of an old Carl zeiss lens , the lensconstruction is nearly identical , I bought a QUENOX adapter for my Z6 but it doesn’t fit that well , I don’t recommend this adapter for big and heavy lenses it can rip your mount of , I don’t recommend using old vintage zoom lenses with this kind of adapters they will suck dust as hell on your mirrorless sensor . By the way nice video 💪😎📸

David: You don't know the half of it. Wait until you try to focus it past 6 feet at the wide open f1.2 setting. FL = Fluorite Lens elements. I am looking at your photos. I think you can do better than that with the focus. F1.2 has a very short depth of field. You will need a tripod to find the in focus part. I have the 55mm f1.2 and that is true with it. I paid $100 for mine. It is in great shape. Try shooting close up with wide open.

You know, sometimes great art comes from the artist and not the gear. Take for example, the movie "Mad Dogs and Englishmen". It is a great Rock movie shot on 16mm film with time codes that sync up the audio to the cameras. This is like NO technology minus three. Yet, working within those limitations this great film was produced. I don't think you will be able to find a Conversion Kit these days. So make use of what you do have, a Canon FL f1.2 lens with all it's limitations, burps and farts. I think the lens is a great clear lens made from Fluorite Crystals, that were made into glass lenses. How cool is that? Google "Fluorite Crystals". Forget about using it to photograph buildings, create art. A great lens is like a great woman. It will push you to be a better artist. It won't break down under pressure... when the going gets tough.

@@vadimvadimovich1075 I store my lenses in the fridge, next to the meat. Radiation kills bacteria and the meat doesn't spoil as quickly. Just kidding. Actually, I was a Chemistry and Radiological Controls officer on a nuclear sub in my youth. Having studied the issue, I have no issues in using legacy-Thoriated glass as designed/intended. As long as you do not hold the rear element(s) next to your cornea for long periods without blinking, grind the glass to dust and inhale it, and/or break the rear elements into shards and impale yourself with them...the risks are negligible IMO. Stored normally or housed on a camera, time-distance-shielding are more than ample in bringing this radiation to near-natural/background levels. Yes, Thoriated glass does emit alpha, beta and some low energy gamma. The later, from decay of Bismuth and Thallium, at the late Th-232 decay stages to stabilized lead. Gamma levels are low. Beta...easily shielded by the lens/camera and glass. Alpha, shielded the same; not to mention it is stopped by the very thin (human) dead-skin layer. That being said, this is only applicable if the lens is used as intended/designed. The best news...the radioactive lens label keeps prices low! Don't tell anyone, it is a secret.

You should be fine, even bananas kick off a small amount of radiation, and background radiation is there with us all around the world, all the time. Unless you're looking really close up at the lens surface for long periods on a regular basis, there's nothing to worry about, as the camera body and lens body are enough to stop alpha and beta radiation. If it was kicking out gamma radiation in dangerous quantities these things would be banned from import.
