    I've been watching many of your videos and find so many aspects about them and your work that I love. Your videos are in standardised, familiar format, no clickbait, no exaggerations, no ridiculous bandwagon trends (big mouth thumbnails, sensationalism, "ASMR", ...) and very soothing to watch. And your work is top-noch, too! Sure, we cannot expect the last nut and bolt to be shiny like in those "dream build" videos; you're a professional shop after all. But everything is diligent, honest, well thought out, informative, and unpretentious. I am so tired of watching/reading stuff like "I don't need a torque wrench, I know how to tighten bolts", "a chain protector is a dork disc and needs to go", etc. This channel is one of the rare gems of this otherwise pretty much ruined video streaming platform. I can only congratulate and encourage you to keep doing your work as you do, because it's great and a real pleasure to watch.

    Two questions : - You changed from cantis to V brakes without changing the levers. How's that? They do have different pull ratios right? - What brand of chain are you using? We have been looking for a high quality 5-6 speeds chain for a long time with no luck.

  • @KarlosEPM

    @KarlosEPM

    +1 on your brake lever question. As far as I know, you can use 6 sp chains on 5 sp freewheels. KMC in fact markets a chain as a 6/7/8 speed. The space between cogs remained the same. Not sure if you could use a chain meant for more speeds, although I would think you could. Cheers.

    Came here for the brake lever non-switch. It's possible they were already high-pull levers, which, from experience, make cantilevers... touchy... Nice service!!

    That was a great era for bicycles and cycling. Comfortable materials, easy enough to service, meant to last. I too daydream of hand machined components 😅 and I'm lucky enough to have a few (apparently indestructible) 90's Alessa wheelsets engraved "handmade in Belgium". Top video and refurbishment and, gosh, that bottom bracket is alien technology 😆.

    I was thinking that myself, I remember when v-brakes first appeared in the late 90s and I tried to use them with standard SLX brake levers - they pulled all the way to the bars before biting! Still got the dents on the back of my fingers 25yrs later… 😄

  • @SeventhTenant

    My thought exactly! Wouldn't be a problem with mini v-brakes, but this mismatched setup raises question about performance and modulation of the brakes. Interested to hear a comment from @bikespeeds. Cantilever brakes that are set up properly are plenty strong for city riding in my experience.

I reckon many cyclists today wouldnt be familiar with the term " 6 speed block", made me chuckle! Proper bike service/ renovation always worth it. @@Bikespeeds it was a wet play day yesterday up here in the Pennines so I stripped the Frankenstein hybrid hardtail commuter bike ( call it what you like ) down and gave it a proper overhaul. It was disgusting but has got me through winter. Spent a full 10 hours on it, no sonic cleaner, just thinners and a toothbrush and a lot of oily rag stuff. I think this is why your videos are so appealing. It's like a second language where I appreciate and understand what you are conveying in them. Thanks for the reply, you must get hundreds of em every week !👍 And no doubt busy busy

    Like your videos - just a correction as you've said the same thing on a few videos. An unloaded spin test on a crank is fairly meaningless and is certainly not indicative of how 'efficient' a bottom bracket is. The way contact seals work is that seals lift above a certain RPM. I would take a modern threaded BB over these old heavy/ingress prone BBs any day of the week: they would maintain their efficiency longer and doesn't require like 3-4 tools to disassemble.

    Excellent videos, I loved watching this video,, I've got a Raleigh marauder retro mountain bike and the crank arm, left side has just decided to break,, lasted ages considering its over 30 years old, but I replaced it with a 2 speed front crank arm I had,, instead of the 3 cog set up it used to be,, only downfall it's harder to set off due to the higher gearing Can you still purchase the old cranks from the 90s,,where the crank is put through the whole of the frame? Not like the newer bikes whicker are cylinder cranks,, so no way of greasing up the bearings 👍👍👍👍 Thanks for the great videos Keep up the good work👍👍👍
