Vinson 101: The Boatswain's Mate of the Watch

Ғылым және технология

Few things are more distinctive, or traditional, across the Navy than the sound of a Boatswain's pipe played over a ship's 1MC. In this edition of 101, we take you to the bridge and introduce you to the Boatswain's Mate of the Watch. She'll explain the history and necessity behind her job.

The job of a BMSN is yeah sure at first painting and sanding. But we are a sea rate so our job is not really exciting until you go out to sea. The helm and lee helm thats your job. I am on a carrier, actually this very same carrier and the now BM2 Anderson. And we rotate in watch. Helm, Lee helm, Forward lookout, Aft lookout, port/stbd life bouy, and port/stbd aft steering. If your just starting out at your first command you are going to have a lot of studying to do. Getting your quals!

Fascinating and great job of demonstrating the Call/Pipe in contemporary service on board a working vessel. Maybe you might advise me, in reading various manuals on the Pipe, some seem to say close fingers for a high note; but some videos seem to show fingers open for the high note - the latter work better for me, but not sure if I am getting misunderstanding something.

As a hull Tech i use to tune the pipe for the guts I liked in Deck . I would braze the pipe tighter and part of the top of the bowl. I was giving a pipe from Deck and the rest of the crew was AMAZED that the BMOTW had so much lung power. I still had to learn the knots. figure 8. mast head , square knots and clove hitch to win them over...I was a HT!!! the whole ship was tight except the officers.

The only knot I knew was the square knot that I learned in boot camp. Expect that I was a RM3 while on board the Enterprise. Plus the GQ gong sounded SICK, and the BM use to sing This is a drill, this is a drill, General Quarters, General Quarters , all hands man your battle station. Then we heard the Gong, Gong,Gong,Gong, then it repeated.

I retired with 21 years in the Navy as a BMC. I always felt that the Bos'n pipe need not be used for every announcement over the 1MC. The primary reason for using the Bos'n pipe is to "get the attention" of the crew for something important about to happen. The overuse just to announce sweepers was one example of overuse. Over time the crew will just tune out the announcements because each becomes just noise. When a pipe call is sounded, one wants all to listen to what is going to be announced.

The USS Vinson is Nimitz Class NUCLEAR powered ship. I take issue with a BM saying their work area is the most professional place on the ship. Obviously has no clue what the Nuke down below are doing. That is where the true professionalism is on a carrier, in the Reactor/Engineering spaces, and also on the flight deck. A lack of professionalism in either space could have severe to grave consequences.
