Vinson 101: Taking a Trip To The Ship's Store

As we were posting this, we got a "Hey Carl" question from Anna Penner: "What kinds of things are available to the sailors in the ship store? Is it kinda like Wal-mart where there's a little bit of everything?" Well, here you go Anna.

    My Dad served in the South Pacific in WW II for over 3 years.....those guys back then had nothing pretty much as far as a ship store from what I remember him telling me.....they just did not have the logistics they have now.....plus it was WW II shortages everywhere.....he told me they ate pretty much canned milk and powdered eggs etc.....no air con either...... went up top side at night with bed rolls to sleep......he loved it though......before he died and had dementia he told me he dreamed/thought a lot about his time in the Navy.....he was my hero and the best Man I have ever known.....I love you dad and miss you...Love Gordo......

    Not really, it's more like a 7/11, you can get snacks, drinks, bath supplies, underwear, uniform accessories, a few other things. Regular meals come from the galley, there's no place to cook anything other than in a microwave anywhere else, and spare uniforms (if needed) are provided from another source

    I have been around the military all my life (but never a member) and this just popped in my head: Printed newspapers are all on the decline for various reasons, mostly people just get digital subscriptions or the app to the papers they want, but do deployed sailors, marines, and officers get media via digital means (smartphones, pads, and pods as well)? What about forward deployed personnel? I've been in ship stores on both amphibs and carriers and I do not recall seeing printed newspapers and magazines (like NYTs, Time, Life, et al).

    A third class with two warfare pins? I remember around 1998 when they said they would start making warfare pins mandatory. Older salts said "they only way that will happen is if they make them much easier and less prestigious." Coincidentally, around the same time they took-away any points towards advancement for having a bachelor's degree; So a warfare pins which means nothing in the real world means everything in the Navy and a degree which means everything in the real world means nothing in the Navy. Go figure.

  • @theblackknight9783

    @theblackknight9783

    3 жыл бұрын

    The warfare pin requirements were changed. In February of 2021 a Sailor would have to be an E5 to get a warfare pin. But an E4 with a ep on their last eval could get a pin. Then there are those Sailors who were grandfather in. If a E4 and below took and passed the test, they can still be boarded. Not sure how prestigious warfare pins were prior to 1998, but the issue I had with it is junior sailors were so focus on getting their pins instead of learning their rate, some were useless. They just got their pins so they could flex it on their uniforms. Another issue is when advancement season would come around some junior sailors were upset they didnt get maped to the next rank. My argument is, well if you can study for a warfare pin and pass two boards, you should be able to pass your advancement exam and earn rank that way.

I tend to believe #Anna Williams' comment that it's hard to advance if the Navy is full up on SH's. Good luck though.

    Jessie Whitman We had Coke all the time. Coke inside a Pepsi machine. On the small ships you ran out of everything or the SH’s didn’t fill the machine up you were stuck with Diet Coke.

    She's an SH (now RS3) with two warfare pins on her uniform. RSs' have a lot of down time while import, and many use that time to earn credits from any college, or trade school they wish too attend, through online courses. You have to work in the field of rate once you leave the Navy.

    accountnumber90 it depends in what part of the world you are in. Like in the Middle East 99 percent of the time it is Pepsi or Mountain Dew. In Asia it is Dr Pepper close to the us it is 50/50 for coke or Pepsi. In the middle of the sea your lucky if they have bottled water.
