Love the interplay between Herbie and Vinnie during the piano solo. It's a great musical conversation, and Herbie's diggin' it.

Gotta say that I love the way the piano sounds here because you can hear most of the tension in Herbie's voicings. I've heard recordings where all you hear is the top part, but the mid-range of the piano comes out here and it's really nice to hear.

the thing about this is you either get it or you don't. this is a very specialized, niche form of jazz. this is the way these magicians express themselves. some people will call this 'noise' or whatever. perhaps they are not ready, or they just never will get it, which is fine. they don't have to. no one is holding anyone to any kind if standard here, like "if you don't get this, you're a subpar musician". perhaps some people do, but that mindset is wrong. everyone has their own way of experiencing/expressing themselves through different genres. but what i can tell you is that learning to let go and experience/understand this kind of music can only come from literal years of study and appreciation of experimental music, i.e. Frank Zappa. this is pure expression--spur of the moment improvisation on all fronts by all personnel in the group. the same thing has been happening in jazz groups and progressive/experimental music groups since humans first shied away from written parts. even the cadenza sections in some concertos for solo instruments backed by orchestras (Bach's bassoon concerto, for example) are all improv. to get this you have to be INTO it. like deep into it. even if you TECHNICALLY understand it, you need to have been studying this kind of music for a while to be truly into it, enjoying it at the most fundamental level. letting go of all preconceived notions of what music is and what it's all about. there is no grey area with this kind of thing. if you're not, you're just not. and like i said before, that's okay. you don't have to be. but if you want to be, then the most difficult part is already done. all that is left is to buy a bunch of albums, sit back, let go of all that you think you know, and let the masters speak to you, teach you. and thr nore you absorb, the more you will understand. it is a wonderful world, and all you have to do is listen

I've actually never seen Dave Holland play a regular 4 string before! Only knew him on the upright. He is an astonishing bass player.

For the people who don't like Vinnie's playing pin this, go listen to Thomas Pridgen cover it... you'll then appreciate this much more. Nothing against Thomas, he's amazing btw.

The interplay between Herbie and Dave Holland really is awesome, and its cool that you can see Herbie being visibly turned on by it. Hell of a group. I actually found Vinnie's playing a little over-the-top. While I usually like a lot of extended fills that go one into the other (a la what you might here on Zappa's live performances), I would have preferred a little less from Vinnie during Herbie's portion of the solo.

Why is Vinnie playing a drum solo over Herbie's piano solo?

Well... Herbie was anointed with his Jazz God status by playing with Miles, ft. Tony Williams, and Vinnie got where he is by, among other things, devouring everything Tony Williams ever did, so it would be a shock if Vinnie was playing anything LESS than completely on fire if Herbie is playing loud-ass mega-dissonant chords all over the piano like that.

TheGumboVariator That is in the 'among other things' category. Do you think Vinnie is playing with Herbie because he played with Zappa, (who proclaimed that the 60's, the time of Herbie's golden era with Miles, were "actually not that great"), or because one of his lifelong influences is Tony Williams, who was Herbie's close friend and regular/long-term bandmate?

They can't be following Vinnie. They HAVE to be listening to a click. All of them. This is absurd. This is Vinnie soloing over a 132 click track in the form of "Actual Proof". Yay. And i love Vinnie. But ....fuck.... I transcribed some of this. They have to have a click....

Vinnie is playing 8th-notes with his left foot on the hi-hat. There's your 'click'...top-shelf players like these don't think in beats- they think in measures. So they all meet on the '1', then go into orbit for a bit, then meet again...👍
