I think this has to be one of the fucking coolest grooves EVER. In the history of western music. Fucking genius. Vinnie makes this 5/8 pulse sit down and almost feel like 4/4 with the accents, back beat, and over the bar-line phrasing. It's like listening to Joe Garage: it melts my brain and makes me want to scream with excitement, frustration, awe, and the crushing knowledge I won't ever be in 20th as good as Vinnie.

"He's one of the most amazing sight-readers that ever existed on the instrument. One day we were in a Frank rehearsal, this was early '80s, and Frank brought in this piece of music called "Mo 'N Herb's Vacation." Just unbelievably complex. All the drums were written out, just like "The Black Page" except even more complex. There were these runs of like 17 over 3 and every drumhead is notated differently. And there were a whole bunch of people there, I think Bozzio was there. Vinnie had this piece of music on the stand to his right. To his left he had another music stand with a plate of sushi on it, okay? Now the tempo of the piece was very slow, like "The Black Page." And then the first riff came in, [mimics bizarre Zappa-esque drum rhythm patterns] with all these choking of cymbals, and hi-hat, riffs, spinning of rototoms and all this crazy stuff. And I saw Vinnie reading this thing. Now, Vinnie has this habit of pushing his glasses up with the middle finger of his right hand. Well I saw him look at this one bar of music, it was the last bar of music on the page. He started to play it as he was turning the page with one hand, and then once the page was turned he continued playing the riff with his right hand, as he reached over with his left hand, grabbed a piece of sushi and put it in his mouth, continued the riff with his left hand and feet, pushed his glasses up, and then played the remaining part of the bar. It was the slickest thing I have ever seen. Frank threw his music up in the air. Bozzio turned around and walked away. I just started laughing." - Steve Vai

The stinger ratted me out. Got lucky and drove rock stars in a van for amnesty international. Well got directions from a no how how to get their forewords and backwards.Bad people to get directions from. They leave things out like he started giving directions from behind the hotel. Got lost. Finally got to the venue and here comes the baby sitter. Stinger stood behind the baby sitter who asked did I now how long it took me. Had no idea! and its the only question he wanted an answer to. Long to short my first and last job as a limo driver. Thankyou Miss sting

Maybe you need to learn to write - your story makes no sense.

@@Jez2008UK Holy crap! I'm reading this and I'm thinking "what is this story/lyrics, this is a brilliant sort of shout out, call response thing to the original lyrics of the song or something." By time I somehow meandered my way to the end I realized it's complete and utter nonsense. Total gibberish. ADHD much?

For me this is an easy beat bcs I come from Macedonia. 5/8 are very common in our traditional folk music but I know it's confusing for some drummers

His playing and speaking over it is his tribute to benard purdie who was the only drummer to have done this prior. Coliauta really lets it all hang out here but his exhibition annd exuberance isnt his values. He stopped doing masterclasses and he expressed that he did ao because he didnt ascribe to sellimg information this way. He didnt want to sell himself as a model of playing but instead he wanted playing to ve what other drummers wanted to do. I know as a drummer, whem i play its when i let my expression on the instrument happen. Coliauta.hasnalways shown that value in his playing. It is discernable in hisnearly years his playing certain systems and habits of study but quite quickly and historically uniquely he established himself as a unique drummer when he btound voice in his practice. I encourage in any musician, take inspiration where it lays but always pursue ntindingnyour own voice when you can too. When.i practice with a guitar player and he or she stops the session to return to a bar where they got the chord wrong i feel im not eoth my peers. When i play with a band that plyas through their errors but audibly correct amd adjust throughout the performance without gull stop, thats when i know im with musician's. Coliauta can spwak over his playing, bit his band is as credible as he is
