Vince Mondoza, Composer in Residence, leads the WDR BIG BAND in the concert of the same name and presents completely new pieces that he has written for "his" big band. With the title "Rumba No1" Vince Mendoza introduces the young Thilo Fleckenstein as Composer Fellow of the WDR BIG BAND. The Composer Fellowship allows 4 young people over a 2-year period to develop their skills as composers / arrangers through weekly lessons and regular readings. The Composer Fellowship was initiated 4 years ago by principal conductor Vince Mendoza and is mainly accompanied by Cologne jazz musician, bandleader and composer Florian Ross. Mendoza has been working together with the WDR BIG BAND since the early 1990s. This long-lasting successful collaboration has been further consolidated since 2016 with the appointment of the American arranger as "Composer in Residence". Mendoza knows the WDR Big Band like no other: with his delicate art of composition, Vince Mendoza fully exploits the potential of each individual band member.

I was fortunate to be in the same Norwalk High School with the "Young Vince Mendoza," and hear some of the early trends in his style. I'm so glad he kept his focus and then spread that sound as a composer and teacher.
