African grooves, virtuoso bass lines and feather-light singing in the tradition of West African griots: Richard Bona weaves these ingredients into a music for head, heart and feet. Richard Bona built his first bass himself from crates and bicycle brake ropes. A French jazz club owner in Douala had played recordings of Jaco Pastorius to the thirteen-year-old Richard and thus pointed the way. Otherwise the Cameroonian might have become famous only as a singer. With his feathery falsetto singing, in which the West African Griot tradition is suspended, he is still enchanting. But it is his astonishing virtuosity on the electric bass that first paved Bona's way into the bands of Salif Keita and Manu Dibangu and finally into those of jazz fusion greats like Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker or Joe Zawinul. Richard Bona has long been a star himself and is now playing together the hr big band with his own music.

He is a very accessible man and very down to earth. I met him in Washington DC at the French embassy after a great performance.

I love his playing and he is an amazing player. What I don't agree with is the "God-given" part of this. It focuses on the idea that he was mostly lucky to be given something by a god. What is clear from his interviews is that he has spent countless hours practicing, transcribing, listening, and dedicating his time to playing music in many other ways. If someone is willing to work that hard and actually puts in the thousands upon thousands of hours, they WILL become excellent. I know the intention of your comment is good, but this is something he worked hard on to earn, not just some sort of gift he happened to be just lucky to receive.

Ce qui démarque plus Richard Bona c'est sa façon de toucher le monde...Rire avec les spectateurs, les faires chante, une minute de blague...Et garde toujours son sourire tout accordant le mouvement du corps avec sa guitare. C'est un art la musique mais aussi un don.

Cela fait au moins dix fois que je regarde ce concert, magnifique et les musiciens sont au top. Richard n'en parlons pas. J'ai surtout aimé comment ses chantons ont été revisité par cet orchestre de jazz. Du pur bonheur. Camair toujours fort. ce Week end le gars qu'on paye pour taper les gens va encore faire des dégâts. je sais que les Camair sont forts wèèèè
