Vince Gill and Patty Loveless Perform "Go Rest High On That Mountain" at George Jones' Funeral

These were among the performers at the Grand Ole Opry for the funeral on May2, 2013. As you will see, Vince gets a little emotional half way through.

This song was played today at the funeral of my father-in-Law (8/12/23). He was 89, served in Vietnam as a US Marine, and was married 64 years and had 4 children. In Sherman, Texas. A good man, father, and husband. Go Rest High Sir. You deserve it.

I had this played for my 76 yr old brother's funeral. He passed away 3 years ago tomorrow (10/2/20). It keeps me calm every time I hear it and sing it and I couldn't be at his funeral so I asked they find a quartet to sing it, and they did. I hope it only brings you peace and joy (and tears) for many years because it was a wonderful tribute. We appreciate your father-in-law's service. I was USO 101st Aborne (1966-67) and lost many friends so I sing this song for everyone I've lost. I hope it brings the entire family peace and rest. It's a very high mountain.

Each night I lay down in my sons room to listen to great performances like this one to gift him a culture of reverence and peace that can only come through the solice of remembrance just as my grandfather did for me. Patti saw it..she probably anticipated it knowing George and Vince's close relationship. I, actually did not anticipate that much emotion and it sucked me down with him in the vortex, and I had to turn it off. It was too much. My feelings about George and Vince's just created something that would only go downhill at the time..not bad or good, just paralyzing. I've been down that path before on LSD and I was not gonna revisit it on it's terms even though I was sober.

Vince wrote that song for his brother after he passed. They were very close. Vince was also close to George. Patty and Vince go back forever, like brother and sister. Country is truly family. Garth showed some real class, after he stood everyone followed. I watched the funeral show and cried like a baby. Later Alan Jackson did George's signature song "He Stopped Lovin Her Today, he stumbled once when his voice broke, who else could have pulled that song off, like "No Pressure." A funeral to end all funerals, I think George is actually more popular today and will always be one of the greats. RIP George.

I used to like this song. My Dad died on Dec. 17th 2021. Actually, that's the date he "went to rest high on that mountain", due to dementia he was dying long before that date. I am now sitting at work, on the overnight shift. This is the first time I've listened to that song since Dad went Home. I am glad I'm in here alone, because I am in tears. I said I "used to like this song". Now, I treasure it. I miss you, Dad. Mel Redford 1931 - 2021

Over the years as I worked in radio and for a few years as a concert photographer, I was most impressed with a small group or performers. Vince and Patty are among the best because they were not "stars", they were people. At a concert with Vince I once asked him when he wanted to wrap up the autograph signing process. He simply told me, "See the lady way back there in the blue... when she gets up up here." What he told me when a young lady who pulled up her blouse and asked him if he would sign "here." That's another story. With Patty I was "tasked" with "watching" at a radio presser. I stuck by her side, and we chatted. When the presser was over, she turned to me and thanked for for watching over her. She complimented for being her "Angel of the Night."

How beautiful are the the feet of thoes that touch the hearts of people that know that there is a higher. Spirit. When Jesus know his time was getting close to leave the world he had compassion for his disciples. At the cross he prayed father forgive them for they know not what they our doing. As brother Vince and his sister sang for their brother what love came from there hearts they showed the same kind of love that Jesus showed. As he hung from the cross what a great day it's gone to be when gods children get home this song brings great joy to my life. I lost my sister in2020 from a broken heart. All she wanted was to see her grand children not just send money to them I pray her children can live with it it took my heart and this song brings me much comfort Jake Phillips let the world know children can hurt you more than any one knows thanks again Vince and patty for your love for your brother .
