Exactly. Which is why it's not historical data and still a myth. The people that called himself Ragnar's sons didn't even live in the same area, let alone during the same time period. There are many mythological figures like this in history. Heracles, for example. Not to be confused with Hercules, who was also very likely a combination of several other hero figures, including the Greek Heracles. Same with most biblical figures aswell. For a person to be a historical figure, contemporary records must exist, outside of the initial source or retells of that source. Since there are no records about most Scandinavian, Norse and Germanic history until years after Ragnar supposingly lived, he cannot be considered a historical figure

In the extended version, when Ragnar speaks with the seer, there is a time when Ragnar mentions Lagertha, basically he explains that the seer manipulates the destinies of people in a certain way, because he told Lagertha that she could never have another child, then she took a chance and lost the son she expected, but if she hadn't heard it, maybe she would be happy with another son. You can also interpret Rollo's decision to stay in Paris in some way because that was his "destiny", but basically his destiny was influenced by the seer.

I wonder if in their religion they had the same ideas as Christianity…. Like if you don’t believe at your death then you don’t make it to heaven. With that being said, I just wonder if he is in Valhalla considering he didn’t fully believe at the end. He did everything to get in his entire life, he had just lost his faith by the end of his life. The lines at the end were like he said, for his people his sons because they believed and that was very important to not disillusion the rest of the population like he had been. I feel like that was a main source of his unhappiness, of course along with Athelstan’s death. I know this is just a show, I’m just too high and thinking about it too much.

Ragnar's only goal since he came back from his 10 year "vacation" was to get revenge for the destruction of the settlement, EVERYTHING he's done since then has been to serve that purpose. Since he couldn't convince his sons and the people of Kattegat to raid with him, he went for plan B, and now they all have the motivation to do so.

Relationships are complicated and Ecbert and Ragnar’s relationship was no different. They were both brilliant, ambitious men. They were both enemies and friends. Ragnar was genuinely fond of Ecbert but that didn’t change his plans. Ecbert was fond of Ragnar but he still had to rid his court of conspirators so the settlement had to go. Both of them fully understood the other. You think Ragnar fooled Ecbert? Or do you think Ecbert knows the Sons of Ragnar will be coming regardless? Of course he knows. He knows because that’s what he would do.

I think Eckbert walked barefoot and in plain robes (not just for disguise) but as penance. It's like the pilgrimage he sent Alfred and Aethelwolf on. (Sorry about the spellings.) And maybe in a way, to pay homage to the gods that neither of them truly believe in any more. And perhaps so that Ragnar wouldn't die alone.
