Man-Swine I just like it because its believed that's actually what ragnar said before he died. The rest of his speech at the end was the writers interpretation, which was awesome too in my opinion 😊

@@joshbornman4457 To be fair that other speech is sort of historic too. There's two versions of Ragnar's Death Poem-the speech he gives here is an edited and translated extract from the poem Krákamál, which was probably composed in 9th century Norway but is attributed as Ragnar's death poem. The piggies/boar line is an edited version of a line from the death poem in the saga of Ragnar Loðbrok (the original is closer to "How the little piglets would grunt if they knew the condition of the old boar", clearly the show's version is altered to hype up the Great Heathen Army), the original version of which is the lyrics of the song we hear shortly before Ragnar's death (as they release the snakes).

Shane s totally right on this. Rangar doesn't hate Ecbert, he respects and probably even admires Ecbert, just as Ecbert respects Ragnar, but it isn't about that. It is a matter of justice. Even though Ragnar might like Ecbert personally, he still sees what Ecbert did as a great injustice that needs to be answered for, thus he is using his death to get revenge on Ecbert and his allies.

I think you nailed it. The two respect each other because they know at a deep level just how similar they are. Two strategic leaders responsible for their people. Two open minded individuals who go against the grain of what their societies believe (Ecbert's secret library, Ragnar's open mindedness on his religion). Two people who knew and truly cared for Athelstan and were effected by their friendship with him. And yeah, two friends trying to one up the other.

When I first read the saga my favourite part was “how the little piggies will grunt when they hear how the old boar suffered” the show and Travis did an amazing job with Ragnars death. It was a big movie to kill him of in a show like Vikings. The show has never been like game of thrones. Ragnar was clearly the main character. Now it’s time that the great heathen army!!!

Well the show is called 'Vikings' and it was always intended to show his sons - the next generation down. It was never just meant to be about Ragnar - in fact he was meant to be killed off at the end of season 1.

This show. I'm not big on TV anymore. I haven't any form of cable since like 2010 or so. All of my media has been from Netflix, Hulu, or KZread. And even then it was mostly just watching reruns of old shows like Scrubs and stuff. I hadn't picked up a new show in years. I never got on the Game of Thrones train, Westworld, etc. However earlier this year, in like January, my girlfriend and I were looking for something new to watch together. Something neither of us had seen before so we could each watch for the first time together completely blind to the show. She was scrolling through Amazon video when she saw Vikings. She suggested it and I didn't really care for what I saw but after the first few episodes, at about the point where Ragnar meets Athelstan, I was hooked. This has easily become one of my favorite shows of all time. This episode and the one preceding it, with Ecbert and Ragnar talking one on one all episode, are fucking incredible. It's been a long time since I've cared about characters in a TV show this much. So to the creators of the show, and to Travis for his portrayal of Ragnar, thank you very much for what you've created here. I never though i would care so much for a man whose life revolved around murder and pillaging but damn you made me care.

Idk if its the writingof this show, Travis's acting portrayal, or the story itself, but this is the greatest show I have ever watched. Better than game of thrones or westworld. I knew this day was coming so I kept up with blindwave for this season after binging the rest. I just watched the episode and was speechless. I went to the comments as I always do to see if the one eyed man was indeed odin and it seems so, but I ran across 90% of the comments recommending "the choice". It is a piece of art. I have never honestly felt so invested and connected with a character to the point that I am crying like I lost a loved one but I am today. This episode along with the tribute is a true masterpiece of art imitating life and vice versa. Ragnar's mind and life was so conflicted with curiosity and dreams that he guided himself a path through life by his means. This is an example of when your greatness exceeds you and following your own path opens your mind and spirit. The show's depiction of such a life and all of his kindred spirits was beautiful. I am greatful I decided to watch this show. And the editing of the choice spoke to me...the way it showed the eternal conflict of man and God which we have been fighting over all of our existence. Kudos to Zurik. I am sure this is long but I felt the need to share within the Viking community... all hail king RAGNAR ... and ⚘ to Travis👏🏽 I can't wait to see what's next!

Ragnar wanted as many people as possible to know he was leaving for revenge, and also to say goodbye. And Ragnar was supposed to die season one but Travis Fimmel did such a good job he kept the role this long, and he helped right the speeches, Michael Hirst the writer said that Fimmel likes to make the speeches personnel and to have a lot more meaning by adding aspects he can throw emotion into.

The writer did say that Ragnar went back to his pure viking instincts when he told Ivar to seek revenge on Ecbert. He knows his people are driven by his conquests and the symbol Ragnar has become, thus he knows his sons and all the vikings will want revenge if he makes this grand spectacle of his 'viking' death. He spoke of Odin, even though he doesn't believe it, only to inspire his people. But why? I do believe he saw that trying to conquer England by settling there peacefully did not work, so he tried something different. He rallied his people under the banner of 'let's avenge the great Ragnar Lothbrok', knowing they would all do it as it is the viking way. Shane was right, Ragnar still admires and respects Ecbert, but he has to do this for his people and himself. Just like Ecbert still respected Ragnar and by extension his sons, but had to *SPOILER* f*ck them one last time before dying by 'giving' them lands even though he's not King. They both understood their roles, but still could respect each other.

Love your reactions! Ragnar's death in the series is inspired by the old viking sagas, where he gets killed in the same way. According to some sagas he acctually said: "How the little pigs would grunt if they knew how the old boar suffers" before he was killed, like in the show. A lot of the show is inspired by the old viking sagas and historical texts. Love it.

A few historical notes, Alfred is actually the true son of aethelwulf and not a bastard, and Alfred has a son named aethelstan, who becomes the first true King of England.

As an English person who actually had to study about some of these events/people in school, hearing most American reactors all say “I hope Alfred has a big part” is truly tickling lol

I think it’s interesting that Ragnar died and suffered for his people in the way Jesus suffered for his people but also sought knowledge just as Odin did. The show has always showed this type of duality of religion in this show

Now that this sad episode is over! We'll have to prepare for the couple of amazing episodes that follow! You see revenge is without a doubt coming in the form of the Great Heathen Army! Can't wait to see your guy's reaction to it.

Fimmel as Ragnar was great, that's why his death(serial character!) is so painful.

His death scene, with his speech I thought was perfect. Dying in war would have been blaaaaaaa. This way he faced his death head on and then it's reminiscent of the first blood eagle scene when he talks about to get into Valhalla he must not scream in pain. He's been tortured and beaten then he's basically bit and poisoned to death and still...............no scream!!, then oden telling his sons in the next episode and the thunder etc. Just perfect. 👌
