Viking Spear and Shield Ep.2 : How to do Thrand's Overarm Throwing Spear Slide!

Ойын-сауық

Thrand and Eldgrim continue the long awaited spear and shield video instructional series with Thrand's overarm throwing slide with step by step instructions and its various range capabilities which seems to make it superior and why it matches ancient and medieval depictions. So sit back grab an ale or mead and watch how to use and do this historical technique uncovered from ancient Greek and Spartan vases and artwork well into and past the Viking age. Special thanks to Roland Warzecha for getting me to prefect this techniques for we both observed in in art work and wanted to see it replicated in the modern age. I also believe this what was lost over time and why spear shield was so dominate and revered in early combat!

    I like the possibilities for short range combat this allows. The assumption that a sword and shield user has the fight in the bag if he gets past the point is a lot less likely here, where the underarm makes it much more easy to bind or knock aside.

    Great work once again. I very much like that it is supported by period art work.

    You may already know this, but the back-weighted stance you show after 8:00 is historical without a slightest doubt - it's shown and explained in Fiore's Floss Duellatorum. Now, Fiore is a lot later than Vikings, but since he's showing the same stance (and technique, avoid blow by stepping, then counterattack or bind), it's probably well worth your time looking into. Word of warning, though, you'll have to read the entire book. Fiore is sort of infamous for referring you to his earlier plays (e.g. sword on horseback refers you back to the dagger) or just plain assuming you already know them (best seen in dagger section). I personally suggest Tracy Mellow translation, it looks really, really good, and unless you can read latin or italian, you don't need the original text all that much.

    Well presented and explained. Points for explaining the importance of hip/torso drive in the stab or throw.

    The hip can be omitted with light overarm sliding throw but you lose some reach and power. So yes hip is very important for speed power and reach.

    Good video. If you ever need an idea for a video you could explain/demostrate that off axis turning footwork thing some more. I not sure i understand how that would work exactly.

    Love that new itro the banner and the flagged banner too mountain did a good hob A trained spear man would be a right pain in the backside to get round for anyone who'd lost their spear. Would be interesting to see some sparing outing the techniques in to practice sometime

    do you have any combat techniques for strapped shields (kite) and a spear?

  • @ARR0WMANC3R
    @ARR0WMANC3R8 жыл бұрын

    Question: where is your spear's center of balance? It seems to me this technique benefits the most from a balance point somewhere near the center of the shaft so that the spear is more manageable to retrieve after being thrown out.

    Depends on length of spear used. You want the point near your head and right eye or just slightly in from of it when chambered.

    When you 'slide' the spear you are reducing forward momentum with friction. This can be observed by the sound of your hand abrading on the shaft of the spear.

    Yes but still more power is achieved than a grip and thrust method in most cases. the acceleration of the weapon and it's weight give more power than body and grip can alone. The body pivot and lunge is not trully message either but if done correctly with method show one can achieve power near thrown speed and that rivals and static grip punching method.

  • @MartinGreywolf

    Well, yes and no. If you are trying to throw a proper full-power strike, then you will achieve the same power with a Thrand grip or static grip, if the weapon is the same. Thrand only has the shaft actually slide at the longest range, otherwise his grip is, well, static (that is, the position of the hand doesn't change, only the way the hand grips the weapon). What people usually do with static grip, though, is not a full power blow, but sort of a quick poke - sort of like a difference between a jab and proper punch in boxing. Both have their place, but work very differently, even if they look almost the same if you draw or photograph them. Once the shaft starts sliding and being slowed, well, you got to a range that you simply couldn't reach with a static grip, so it's not a question of 100% or 80% power, but of striking or no strike possible at all. In that situation, it's always better to have the option to strike.

    It predates the peltast going to the bronze age and the primary style of the hoplite and spartans that was used with the Dory or Doru. Here are a couple of videos explaining it. A spear user against a shield user would make any sliding with the spear very vulnerable to disarm. As well, I am sure against a shield user the spear man with a shield would focus on lower blows to the opponents leading knees, shins and feet. Probably why greaves came about. Using the reach, but firm handed, seems more realistic for real combat, being all sweaty and bloody prone, grip and dis arming has deadly consequence.
