Viking Shield Techniques - shield clench throw ep.1

Thrand and Eldgrim demonstrate Techniques of how to come out on top of a dual shield clench in this exciting new series. Thrand demonstrated a shield manipulation technique that will get you in a position to counter with an arm or shoulder cut and not give an opening. Then shows how to do this and apply a Throw. After then demonstrates the Throw can be on on the off side as well. The thigh throw is a popular more used in many Historical fight manuals and Treaties. So set back grab some mead or ale wile Thrand and Eldgrim show how it could have been applied in the Viking age with Historical full sized large round shields as well as win a clench.

    For any more shield demonstrations like this, you guys should see about making a transparent shield so the camera can see what is going on through the shield.

    Nice techniques and well executed from the established position. In German longsword it is called a Schrank, or barrier throw, as Thrand mentioned. The weakness of the large shield is amply demonstrated. The large diameter means that any pressure on the edge from the side is almost impossible to stop, causing the shield to turn in the hand. If there is a secondary strap on the arm then this will reducde this effect considerably, though some effect will occur, would be interesting to try out that type of shield as a test. The first couter I would try is to push my hand into the opponents face as the shield turned in the hope of blocking the line of attack that the sword makes and to redirect the sword arm so that the throw cannot be made. I must try this out myself. great stuff.

    The fact that the large round shield pivots is not a bug, it's a feature. The extra reach provided by the center grip is massive compared to that of a strapped shield, and this increases both the protection and the offensive potential of the shield. One of the drawbacks of all shields is that they frequently get in the way of the weapon (sword, axe,spear, etc). The pivoting shield allows the shield to be rapidly pivoted out of the way to open up for strikes and to obstruct the enemy's own sword and shield. The large round shield itself is a formiddable weapon that can strike quickly and unexpectedly. And the large size provides incredible protection when held out at full length. I'd argue that it is the ideal shield design for any heavy infantry not wearing full suits of chain or plate armor.

    I think the main problem with these videos remains that Thrand's shield is opaque. Have you guys considered making a shield that is basically just an inch thick outer ring held by a 'cross' in the center for stability? Alternatively, maybe cutting out 'view' windows, so one can see what is happening between both shields. That said, thank you for doing it. Its just a bit unfortunate that the Shields (nature of the beast) block a lot of the visibility in these situations.

  • @IshanDeston

    @IshanDeston

    ThegnThrand Yeah, it would just be for the demonstrations (and is my only nitpick about the videos, i mean i have your explaination and i can guess what you are doing, but you guys seem to know yourself you are struggling with showing what you are doing. Having one of the shields be just for the demonstrations, that face the camera and allows people to see through, would probably go a long way to increase the visibility. And in theory you'd only need the outline for your own shield, so people know where your shield is (and no one complains about it) I think maybe an inch thick ring, with a sturdy cross to hold it, would be sturdy enough to allow you to use the shield as you normally would, but still increase the visibility to what you are doing.

    Another insightful video - in my recent (the past year) research. I have learned so much about ancient warfare and tactics, I used to ignorantly think people ran at eachother with inferior melee weapons and hacked at eachother aimlessly for a while, I have learned that it was quite the opposite - and I love these videos where I can physically see whats happening, sometimes reading and comprehending what theyre trying to emphasise/elaborate to you can be quite hard --- cheers ThegnThrand appreciate the vids and time!!!

    ThegnThrand Besides that I loved the video! I am getting a lot of respect for those viking shields. However, what do you think about famous viking weapons such as the so called "Dane Axe"? It wouldn't be so popular if it didn't worked and it requires you to drop your shield so you can handle the 10 inch blade on the 55 inch handle - clearly for two hands?

  • @Thrand11

    @Thrand11

    Ninetails1985 The Dane axe is a good pole weapon. It can be up to 6' long so reach gives some advantages.

    Great demonstration! If I were to go ahead and specialize in one particular fighting style/warrior/soldier from the past, I'd definitely want a variety of the shields they use, both in size and possibly construction. If I was really big on ancient Rome for instance, I'd have some early republican shields as well as the late rectangular scutums. Might even include some cavalry gear to boot. If my things is more ancient greece, there were a couple of different shields used in the archaic period, and even when the aspis was common, archeological finds tell us there was some degree of variance in size and construction. So I wouldn't know why folks who claim to be viking specialists would stop short at only one certain size of shield. I could definitely see the benefit of the larger one in both shieldwalls and certainly against missiles. Round shields will always leave a certain amount of the body exposed, be it the legs and head or more/less. One way to alleviate that is certainly with larger shields.

    The throw is from many European treatise and fight manuals and even used in Japanese martial arts as well as many others. I just applied it to 3' Viking center boss round shield combat based on stories from the sagas of warriors throwing others to the ground by using a special skill with their body and shields as described.

    I was taught back in the day that the yell when falling is for breath control. Bracing for impact can make you hold your breath sometimes, then the ground will knock the wind out of you. This keeps you from holding your breath.

    Eldgimr, all the best wishes for your coworker, I hope that he makes a 100% recovery in both mind and body.. Remember kids, guns and alcohol just don't mix! Also, I find your videos to be both educational and entertaining. Personally, I found just about 90% of Most Dangerous Warrior to be weapons-grade bullshit, more entertainment than educational. Had they not tried to pass their BS off as fact, I would've enjoyed it more. Here's hoping that I see the names "Thrand" and "Eldgrimr" in the credits as fight choreographers in some future movie.

    bjmccann1 I agree with you and also wish Eldgrimr's co-worker the best. (: Did you mean Deadliest Warrior? Agreed, by the way. Huge, huge, steaming truckloads of crap were involved in plenty of that show. Truly the only entertaining and worthwhile thing I got from that show was the moments when they'd test weapons on the ballistics gel dummies with bones and blood inside them. It did, at the least, give you an idea as to what damage these weapons could cause, (at least on an unclothed/armored person).

    Janas Aurora Yes, Janas, the weapons testing was interesting but flawed. Remember the IRA episode? One of the IRA "experts" used a slingshot to put a bullet into a skull's eye cavity. The show's hosts didn't seem to be very impressed. When I saw that, I was impressed, impressed with how full of shit the show was. A shot to the eye socket might cause a brain hemmorage that could lead to death. At the very least, the victim of such a wound would be out of the fight and could either be bypassed, or killed at leisure. There are too many more examples for me to continue without hosting my own KZread channel.
