11:15 They were trying to install a glitch chip (Probably a Picofly, Hwfly or Instinct-NX), to run unsigned code like custom firmware and homebrew. To install the mod the chip needs to connect to the capacitors on the APU for glitching and to the DAT0 point on the eMMC on the back of the mainboard. The capacitors near the eMMC have solder on them because they are being used as anchor points for a DAT0 adapter which sildes under the eMMC.

I am always surprised when I watch this channel and NRF on how many shops do such a poor work when they are supposed to be professionals. Nothing is more frustrating for a tech trying to clean up someone else's poor work. Also reduces the chance of a successful repair.

They were trying to add a mod chip. Part of that includes cutting away at the shield and soldering wires to different points. The bridged caps around the processor is where the ribbon cable connects for the mod chip

Looks like a picofly failed install to me. Someone brand new to soldering probably saw a YT video thinking it would be easy and killed their switch. RIP.
I've always been scared to solder but you make it look so easy that I want to try on some already broke electronics.
I can’t tell you how incredible these videos are. You have kept me entertained, but also vastly increased my ability to understand and work on these things for myself. Thanks for providing me with the confidence to replace my switch game card reader. The replacement that I ordered didn’t work, but I was able to desolder the game card reading component from the board and put it on the original board. Long story short, I have a fully functional switch again. For over a year I considered my physical switch games unplayable. Really appreciate you, and eagerly awaiting your next upload

Thank you for your comment! So glad to hear this. This is the main reason I make these videos.
@25:48 the max chip (bottom left, just right of the speaker connector) normally causes that short on the BQ capactior, remove the max chip and check for short, if its gone, thats your issue.
I was very disappointed when I had to send my Switch OLED in for repairs. It seemed like a simple fix of replacing the Wi-Fi chip, but the repair shop just gave me a brand new console and no information about why they decided to deem my console "unfixable". All my data was on the old console and is now lost forever. Unfortunately, because I had a warranty, I did not try to repair it myself. I love the work you did in this video, keep on fixing!
21:35 You know the console is going to work after the repair attempt when it gets fully put back together before it's 'tested' again. ;) Great job Steve.

Awesome video and repair especially on Switch no 2,you're a Maestro,I wouldn't know where to begin,now there's less electronic waist.💯👌🏻💪🏻
You can't count the first Switch as fixed because you didn't add the perfect amount of thermal paste to it.
Wild to see the OLED switch before and after your clean up! Great work!
As someone already pointed out, Switch #3 is definitely a victim of someone trying to install a modchip on it. I saw a vid of someone installing the said modchip that's why it looked familiar.

Nice job Steve! My roommates switch which was my old v2 one I gave since I had a oled one and his has the same problem it’s not bricked but dosent charge
25:45 I believe a short in the chip to the right of the charging port can sometimes be caused by the chip to the left, the one right below the shield you replaced in the previous one. I think that's the bq chip, but don't quote me on that. You should try replacing that one.
Always satisfying fixing the un-fixable, at least that what they want t you to think
I feel bad for that rent to own guy. Great video as always!
Not bad at all! Glad to hear that you got some of the Switch's fixed! And hopefully you can use some of the parts from other ones if you ever need to repair more Switch's.
Watching you do this makes me feel like I can do this but reality snaps me back to knowing I am no where near doing that kind of repair. Can’t even find the reason for the pop shut down for the 3DS I am fixing even when the speakers were replaced and no damage on the ribbon cable 💀. So much to learn to catch up. So far I did the simple Ds lite fixes. Saved 13/16 with 3 motherboards being dead with no way to get them to work. Inspired by you.

Thanks! You too
For the OLED Switch, they were installing a modchip most likely, for which you need to solder to the CPU (SP1 & SP2) and more on the OLED model. You need microsoldering knowledge and a microscope, but a lot of people try to do it by eye and mess it up. EDIT: As mentioned below my comments, their soldering to DAT0 went very very wrong, which is also needed for an OLED install

I’ve modded quite a few OLED switches, and it’s not an easy task unless you’re experienced. Seeing that mutilated board was heartbreaking.. like what kinda hamfisting was going on lol. Glad you were able to resurrect it!
Hey man, when you were working on the "modded" switch, I'm very well aware of what the mod is and how it works. The person who attempted to mod this is clearly new to soldering. No flux used(or they used the terrible paste flux), too much heat on the capacitors on the SoC, and they scraped wayy too much solder mask around the via (not the larger rectangular ground pad next to it) to the top right of the cpu (where the shielding was cut). Very surprised they didn't Bridge that via to the ground plane next to it. That is a cpu clock point used by a modchip for timing when to inject a payload.
Why is it seemingly that only KZreadrs can fix this stuff? 😄
Can you make a video showing the places where you can fix it and the equipment?

After you replaced the chip on the 4th switch. It appears to be a bridged resistor right above the chip you just replaced. At 24:47 in the video it looks like two resistors are touching.

Hey, so the oled one was trying to install an oled homebrew mod chip, which needs to tap some points on those chips and you also need to cut the heat shield…etc
@DrWaSaBe
11 ай бұрын
There is also a thing you slide under one of the chips and you need to use hot air to solder it, clearly the mod was wayyyy to advance for this guy to try and attempt
I always manage to blow tiny capacitors and whatnot off the board and have to reseat them when I'm trying to replace chips/ports with hot air. If I turn the airflow down I can't seem to get enough heat on some boards with extensive ground planes. What kind of settings are you using for this type of job?
@Tronicsfix
11 ай бұрын
It can be tricky. I leave my station on pretty high airflow but just don't put it very close to my work piece. I usually have quite a bit of flux on what I'm working on and that helps things stay in place too.

Hi Tronics, I love your videos, I am from South Africa and have been watching you for 3 years. I opened up my Xbox One original because it was switching off everytime; I found a lot of dirt and cockroaches inside. I cleaned it and when I tried to reassemble it I think I bent two pins on one of the thingies on the motherboard. I was born without arms and I use my feet to do everything. I guess my toes were too big to put the ports properly together. Can you please assist me in any way? Regards
cool vid keep it up
Any suggestions for an original ds shell (plays gba and ds games)
fixing these devices seems a lot more mentally stimulating than the games they actually play...
Man has me looking in eBay for bargains after watching him fixing stuff haha
What happens if you put a oled screen on a older switch ?
For the Fortnite switch, because it was something so simple, do you send it back to the guy for the same price or do you keep it and sell it on eBay?
@Tronicsfix
11 ай бұрын
If I buy something from someone then I keep it. Sometimes that ends up good for me and sometimes it ends up bad but as long as two people agree upon a price and they both understand the deal then when that deal is done it's done.
I would’ve loved to send in my switch! It has a very weird problem when it is docked, it works on the home but about 5 minutes into a game the screen goes black, and the game reader is also broken 😢
for the modded OLED the shield was cut to run wires from the chips
It amazes me how these shops “fix” things and obviously don’t test them after!
I don’t understand why when you could see that one chip was not on correctly. You still left it. And had to go back and change it. 🤦♂️
Is there a modchip for switch, the destruction on the second one can't be random

Looks like someone was attempting to install the mod chip on that 2nd swtich which basically allows you to hack the Nintendo Switch's firmware and run homebrew and unlicensed games. However it is not like installing a playstation mod chip and is much more difficult requiring decent microsoldering skills and equipment. The person who attempted the mod obviously had neither.

The key to rent to own stores. Is to pay it off as quickly as possible. If you buy something like a Nintendo switch from a rent to own store. Try to pay it off in like 3 months. You're going to pay an extra 50 bucks on top of what the switch cost but you didn't have to come up with that money all in one chunk
