Hi, in this video I attempt to fix a whole bundle of faulty items sent into my PO Box from viewers of the channel. Hopefully the faults and items will be varied. Let's see if any of them can be fixed.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

  • @oliverer3

    @oliverer3

    6 ай бұрын

    @@rayhowe4354 Do you perhaps mean "via"? It does sound a bit like vire with the British accent. If so a via is a tiny hole drilled through a circuit board that is plated with metal to connect the tracks between the different layers of the circuit board. In this particular case, they're especially relevant as they're often more susceptible to being damaged by corrosion than the rest of the traces on the board.

    Regarding the Sega Game Gear, I once had a gameboy advance that was in the same condition. Granted it definitely needs a lot of work, but honestly it was a rewarding experience getting so much damage repaired and seeing it work against all odds. Tackling visible damage without having to think about it is therapeutic sometimes. I went over all the broken vias and traces with a fibreglass pen so I could physically see the break and repair it. You’ll also be surprised how many will clean up. If you wick up the solder from inside the vias you could run two through-hole jumper wires, going from point A on the top side of the board, going to point B & C on the underside. If the vias are full of corrosion poke it out with the end of some tweezers, clean with IPA and then run the wires. Come on Vince it’s vintage! It deserves a revisit! Beyond economical repair is for the manufacturers! My gameboy advance still works 2 years later by the way!

    27:05 Oh heck yeah, lithium batteries don't like being charged to 100% frequently or discharged to 0% frequently, but that's exactly the life they live in power banks. And they can ultimately end up in exactly the fault condition that you found: self-discharge. I'm told that this is because the electrodes form microscopic whiskers that bridge through the electrolyte. 49:00 Your heat-shrink finishing of the microphone arm reminds me of something I did at work a few years ago: I was wearing cheap sunglasses and managed to break one of the arms. I didn't feel like going out and buying another pair just yet, and it was a pair of sunglasses I would wear only at work anyways. So I mended it with a pair of heat shrink tubes - a slightly larger one over a smaller one for rigidity. Then a few months later the other arm broke, so I did the same fix again. Still have 'em. 😂

    About that projector, you had it on radio and bluetooth. Maybe it did nothing because it had to be switched to video mode? I have a similar one (very very cheap chinese one) that when is on radio/bluetooth do not display video, but with a SD card in it turn video on. Also, to use it as projector, I need to give it some signal on VGA, AV or HDMI. It also have a button on its remote to switch the video off (or maybe only the LED turn off to save power or to protect the LED).

    Some good fixes. I did like the SD card fix and thank you Damian for sending that in. Sometimes its the simple fixes that impress. I did also love the isopropyl picture that flashed up, I am sure it was noticed by the facebook members.

    Usually a TV has an audio and a visual output of the circuit. My guess is that the visual output of your circuit on the projector is down. This would explain why the sound is working

    part of me wants to send My old IBM T42 Motherboard to Vince to Reflow the GPU On (unlike most GPUs a reflow can actually be permanent on these as the chip isnt at fault). But i recently came into possession of a new motherboard which works flawlessly so no need!..but I'll keep the old board around.

    that kind of connector is very picky about connecting and just tightening it down doesnt work, i had to fiddle with the display cable for something for awhile before it would reconnect and that device didnt actually have anything wrong with it, i had only taken it apart to replace the thermal paste

    With Lithium Ion batteries, the key rating is maximum continuous discharge current, which will be in amps. That's the amount of juice it can safely push out at once. As long as the replacement battery is equal to or higher than the original, you'll be fine. Amp Hours (or milliamp hours) is a measure of capacity. A one amp hour battery can supply one amp for one hour, or two amps for 1/2 hour, or 1/2 amp for two hours, etc. As far as safety goes, it doesn't matter, but a lower rating will go flat sooner. As for INR vs ICR, it doesn't really matter. The charging and discharge voltages are close enough to the same between chemistries that they are interchangeable.

    Additionally, max/continuous [dis]charge ratings might be given in 'C' too, multiples of the capacity. A 2000mAh (2Ah) cell rated 20C can do 2x20=40A

    Hey Vince, with the CD player, would you suspect that maybe regular use eventually forces that part to dislodge do to poor design in that area? If so, will this maybe repeat with use and is there anything you might do to reinforce while you're in there?

    You can discharge caps by shorting the live and return on the mains plug. (Obviously not plugged in 😉)

    Vince, don't those large caps have leak-down resistors to bleed off the voltage for safety reasons? You're a good detective. You don't miss much. A regular Mark Furman.

    The Game Gear would defo be a Labour of love or buy one with crud case or screen and swop out parts, the sd card if I get a faulty one I throw em out as they cost penny’s & not sure about extra pin, nice work on the headset &Hifi system & I’d say ur right to give up on the projector.

    I had my first ever 18650 flare up last week, expensive ones too very high drain things... was cycling the cells for another set an Efest pair and I thought this cell seems warm just as I was going to pull it out, as it came out it started fizzing fire and burned top of my thumb pretty badly. Only had them a few months and always treat them with respect not draining them to the max or overcharging having a pretty expensive 4 slot charger too. Sent the pair back to the company with quite a shirty letter attached, sent in a proper battery box and bag and I won't buy the brand again :(
