Viewer Questions: Swapping a V-8 in a Jeep YJ - Dirt Every Day Extra

A viewer wants a V-8 swapped in his Jeep with as few modifications as possible. So on this episode of Dirt Every Day Extra, Dave Chappelle and Fred Williams give him a list of what he’ll need and things to think about for the swap.

    Keep the six cylinder with carburetor but covert it to propane. Then you can run it at just about any angle you want. Proper axle gearing is probably more important than the power plant. I’m still running the 2.5 with stock 4.10 gears and 35s. Soon I’ll be regearing to 4.56. (Dana 44 front and Ford 8.8 rear)

    I love Jeep YJ's. Mine is nearly finished... (finally) 1991 YJ 4.0L AX15. It had the high pinion Dana-30 in the front, but I swapped in a Dana-30 without the CAD from a '98 XJ. I also swapped an XJ Dana-44 in the rear. In the past I had considered swapping in the crappy 305 (w/Quadrajet carb) from my crappier '87 Camaro, then changed my mind and planned to swap the 3.9L 4BD1T diesel from my old Isuzu NPR. Even considered swapping in the little 1.9L ALH diesel I have sitting in the shed. But I just like the 4.0L too much so it is staying.

    I had the 360 in my 1998 ZJ (lx) , they eat water pumps for some reason. In any case, they are cheap because aftermarket parts and cost are much higher vs any 305 or LS swap.

    We have a shop here in Michigan at does work on all Jeeps well as straight from the factory floor 318 conversions on the 2019 Jeep's that are quite a site to behold. They also do plenty of R&D work directly with FCA's Jeep engineers and had a "pilot" Jeep in their shop about a year back doing their 1st 318 conversion not only for future product, but also for one of the Jeep execs. Wasn't a fan of the new Jeep until one of their techs spent an hour of his free time going through the whole thing with me. After that have to confess that it's quite nicely engineered and set up quite nicely to support all the aftermarket sellers.

    If you CAN keep the 4.2 ( I assume you're swapping out a motor with a working bottom end and doenst have a hole in the block), and want a little more power. You can keep it simple with taking your head to a machine shop and getting a good 5 angle valve job, new springs, a new cam, and a well sorted exhaust, should liven the 4.2 up pretty nicely. If you splurge a little and get a trick EFI system you can run different tunes to liven it up pretty nicely over the stock Carb as well..... A V8 swap though cool is alotta headache and in my own opinion is more for show than actual work. Plus you aren't gonna have to hassle with getting a bellhousing adapter and cutting up your front suspension...... and with the money you can save over doing a motor swap you can reinvest that into your suspension (stronger axles, 44's front and rear, lockers, even bigger tires if you need them)..... Just my two sense from a guy who likes motors on KZread

    A 304, 360, 401 will bolt directly to the ax15, you just need the correct pilot bushing, motor mounts and radiator big enough to cool it.

    I installed a 305 out of a 77 Nova in my 89 YJ over 20 years ago and it's been a daily driver ever since. I had the first the advanced adapters kit in the torque flight 999. However, the crank twisted the center out of the flywheel one day so I installed a turbo 350 trans. Other than the fuel economy everything's been fine.

    Did a 302 and a T18 into my cousin's for him. Just took a motor mount kit welded in, and a t18 adapted to his 231 via a Novak kit and replacement output shaft. Custom driveshafts from a little shop. Worst part was getting a hydraulic slave cylinder setup. Basically chopped the factory master cylinder out and put in a Ford one on the firewall. Weird P/N for the bellhousing we had (which came off a 78 F250 camper special with a manual clutch) to make it work but it's fine now. Still has the 35/30 combo open/open waiting to grenade, but he doesn't offroad, it's just an around-town ride for him. Bottom line, if you're at all mechanically competent, figure out what you have first and then what you need to do to adapt it. We had the T18 first, and then pieced together three junkyard 302s. Has the heads, intake, and exhaust from a mustang, the block and rotating assembly from a crown vic (reringed, all new bearings, dingleball honed), and the accessories from an f150. Basically grabbed three motors on the cheap from my buddies at the local junkyard, and picked what was best out of all of them to make one.

    I have a YJ 4.2 with a header with Howell EFI runs pretty good

  • @AgamemnonTWC
    @AgamemnonTWC6 жыл бұрын

    AX15 would be okay, none of the other YJ transmissions would be remotely strong enough. For the price of the adapter to run the AX15 though, he could get a T18 or SM465 and have a much beefier transmission at the cost of losing overdrive. Once you've got big tires though, 4th gear starts to feel a lot like 5th does stock, and with the granny gear you could avoid regearing. That's my plan with my V8 swap, already have my drivetrain. I do have to wonder what the point of swapping in a 305 is, given it makes about the same power as a 4.2. I think it'd be a waste unless you just wanted the V8 sound. You guys touched on that too though. Of course I can't say too much, I plan on swapping an AMC 360 into mine. Additionally, as far as axles, he has a high pinion D30 and a D35. They didn't use a low pinion in a YJ. He can do the Ford 8.8, it's literally almost bolt in, and keep the HP D30 and he'll be good for 35s and potentially 37s. The 8.8 can even usually be found in matching ratio and with a limited slip. The 8.8 is far and away the best swap into anything 5 lug and small truck width, and can easily handle the power of a 305 and more.

    You said that he would need to cut out all of the factory mounts to make it leaf spring. All YJ wranglers were leaf spring front and rear. Wranglers didn't get coil spring suspension until the TJ came out. To all of the people that are complaining about him wanting to use a 305, there is nothing wrong with them. There is a good reason that GM kept producing the 305 instead of the 327, 307, and so on. 350s are no real power houses until you dump alot of money into them.

    Why not swap in a 4.0 HO from a 91+ XJ? Bolts right up, motor mounts fit, everything fits (even the exhaust!) and you get 197 HP. Of course you'll have a lot of wiring harness work instead though, but most of it should be transferable from the XJ.

    The transmission final drive ratio and the differential ratio determine how fast a vehicle will go. Not the size of the engine. I see morons on jeep websites who want to put disc brakes on an old Willys 2A or 3A!?! Why? Your top speed is 40 mph. Why do you need disc brakes?

    Say that to someone with a built 334. Then imagine off-roading a Jeep with a built 334 under the hood. Easy 400 foot pounds, solid lowend torque and better fuel economy than a 350 would make it an ideal candidate for a little Jeep.

    Now is a built 334 the same as a stock 305??? Really?

  • @shadesofbluee

    @shadesofbluee

    Stock 305 still uses a 350 crank, it was designed with torque & fuel economy in mind. It just needs an upgraded cam and heads to do away with the power real limiters. But if you're willing to go that far, on an old engine, you may as well give it a real refresher. Thinking that even a 'stock 305' would not be good for off-roading a light duty vehicle is just ignorance.

    The only reason to have a 305 in your vehicle is because it's the original engine that came in it.

    David Knauss That could be pretty awesome, especially with the motors and batteries that are now becoming available. There is a Korean company that converted a TJ or JK to electric sounded and acted a lot like a R/C Scaler!
