    Well, invading Vietnam seems to be a bad decision through and through on U.S' part. Like, they should have at least known Vietnam's history before deciding. Vietnam, as a small nation, spent thousands of year fending off Chinese invasion, and fought off the Mongol Empire 3 times in a row when they were still the biggest empire in the world after conquering Europe. Anyone with common sense would know Vietnam war was a bad idea.

And as an Indian being suppressed by colonial forces for 200 years really felt for him and Vietnam..... Kudos to every Vietnamese that they failed to devide you into two countries and led you to long Lasting moral and economic fight like INDIA and PAKISTAN and BANGLADESH... Being a Bengali My grandparents had to overnight leave their houses forever and come to new India... Many of my relatives died in this nuisance... Edit: Thank you everyone for showing solidarity... "...Nevertheless, for more than eighty years, the French imperialists, in the name of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity, have violated our Fatherland and oppressed our fellow citizens. They have acted contrary to the ideals of humanity and justice. In the field of politics, they have deprived our people of every democratic liberty. They have enforced inhuman laws; they have set up three distinct political regimes in the North, Center, and South of Vietnam in order to destroy our national unity and prevent our people from being united. They have built more prisons than schools. They have mercilessly slaughtered our patriots; they have drowned our uprisings in bloodbaths. They have fettered public opinion; they have practiced obscurantism against our people. To weaken our race they have forced us to use opium and alcohol. In the field of economics, they have fleeced us to the backbone, impoverished our people and devastated our land. They have robbed us of our rice fields, our mines, our forests, and our raw materials. They have monopolized the issuing of bank notes and the export trade. They have invented numerous unjustifiable taxes and reduced our people, especially our peasantry, to a state of extreme poverty. They have hampered the prospering of our national bourgeoisie; they have mercilessly exploited our workers."

    This whole war was the result of a critical decision from the U.S : their rejection to support Ho Chi Minh - the founding father of Vietnam. Believe it or not, Ho Chi Minh never wanted to embrace full Communism, the declaration of independence that he wrote was based on the U.S declaration of independence. His only goal was to have Vietnam become an independent nation, free of France's grasp, free of China's influence. He approached the U.S with the intention of asking for their supports in Vietnam's independence, hoping that they could put themselves in the Vietnamese's shoe because the U.S was also a colonial nation that got its independence, and Vietnam was doing the same. However, since the U.S were ally to France as part of the treaty, they couldn't risk losing France in order to contain the spread of Communism. Plus, Vietnam wasn't showing any potential of a strong nation yet, so the U.S had no reason to support Ho and his movement. Ho Chi Minh had no other choice but to turn to the USSR for help. He used Communism as a tool to free Vietnam, a necessary devil. Vietnam only went full Communism after Ho Chi Minh's death. By then, his successor - Le Duan who was a radical Communist, enacted many isolationist reforms that brought vietnam into a stage of stagnant till 1987 when he died and the Communist party began to open to the free market.

    The Vietnam War holds the record for the most dropped bombs in history, with 7,662,000 tons of explosives used by the U.S. Air Force, 3.7 times more than the 2,150,000 tons used by all countries during World War II. Another source reported that the amount of bombs used by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War was about 15.35 million tons, including 7.85 million tons dropped from aircraft and another 7.5 million tons used on the ground.

    They didn't fight against the US to gain independence, they fought against France. At this point and time, both the north and south were independent nations, and neither was controlled by the US. The North invaded the South, and the South requested international assistance, as the Communists were invading South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, the international community intervened, while Communist nations poured support onto the North. Troops from dozens of countries fought in this war. So no, no one was fighting the US for independence. The US never controlled Vietnam, had nothing to do with the creation of North or South Vietnam, and didn't even support the South Vietnamese government for much of the early period. The North wanted to unite the North and South by military force with a rifle in front and the Communist world at their back, and the Communists took Southeast Asia. Let's not pretend it was the Americans engaged in imperialism, it was the Communists and their allies engaged in imperialism.

    Vietnam was declared to be an independent country (2/9/1945) after vietminh defeated the Japanese. The last emperor of vietnam (Bao Dai) dethrone himself and declared the righteousness of the new government of vietnam in 1945. Therefore, vietnam from the start is one country. No south or north. Bao Dai was famous with his claim: he would rather be a citizen in a free country than be the emperor of a dependent one. Bao Dai himself was invited to be the Supreme advisor to the new government but soon left the country. He returned to vietnam after the french persuaded him to serve as head of state. The successors of this state were the Diem and Thieu after several coup d’etat which was puppeted by the US. Therefore there is no righteousness of those called southern government from the start. They are all puppets.

  • @Robertz1986

    @Robertz1986

    @@chaaulinh The North and South were both to be temporary governments until a national government could replace them. Instead, both the Communists and Nationalists fought against the French (they fought the Japanese too, but didn't defeat them, rather the US did in a different theater). That said, it wasn't the Communists alone who achieved independence, and the Communists didn't represent the resistance generally, only the Communist resistance. The Chinese had a lot to do with the establishment of the north as Communist, and other powers had a lot to do with the establishment of the South as non-Communist, but both were completely independent, and neither was a puppet of the French. That was slander used by the Communist North as a pretext for invading the South, but it had no basis in fact. In fact, the South Vietnamese fought of the North Vietnamese alone and unsupported for years, while the Chinese meddled throughout the length of the conflict on behalf of the Communists, and the North massacred civilians on both sides who disagreed with them by the hundreds of thousands. The United States was never a colonial power in Southeast Asia, the United States had nothing to do with the creation of South Vietnam or North Vietnam, instead like many countries, the US answered the South's call for assistance after years of invasion had begun to take its toll. In fact, the US left after everyone agreed to peace in 1973. Instead, both sides kept on fighting, the North invaded the South, and they fought alone for two years without any significant foreign assistance, while the Communists backed by much of the Communist world invaded South Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos in huge numbers. Why again were there 300,000 Chinese troops and unimaginable levels of military and civilian aid North Vietnam from China? Why were North Korean officers in North Vietnam? Why were North Vietnamese troops in Cambodia and Laos? It was all Communist aggression. It had nothing to do with some fake "independence" that they had already had since the French defeat.

    Vietnam wants independence. The United States supports the south of Vietnam, but at the same time, it needs to establish a military base in Vietnam to threaten China, so China has to support North Vietnam, which is the truth. Vietnamese people in history have been repeating their personalities. Sometimes they feel good, sometimes they attack you. China has provided too much help to North Vietnam. The rice I live in our province in China was provided to Vietnam but I was reluctant to eat. However, Vietnam later wanted to invade China's land, so there was a war between China and Vietnam. Vietnamese can never be friends. This is determined by their national character. You help them, but they attack you.

    The elite earns alot from each war, ex. earn money from drug, oil, exploit resources, sell weapons for both side. The elite even use American’s tax to pay for their war’s debt and take away billions $ from American. War brings money and advantages for the rich, so the lesson is for poor people, not for the elite.

During the Dien Bien Phu battle, the hero Phan Dinh Giot decided to sacrifice for peace. He took his body to fill the enemy's artillery for the Vietnamese army to advance. And there are many other examples. Be Van Dan is a hero of Vietnam. During the battle, the whole team died and only 17 people remained. At that time they did not have a place to place small artillery shells to shoot enemy. Be Van Dan told his teammate Chu Van Pu to put the cannon on his shoulder. He was seriously injured in his shoulders and torso and died. There are many other examples but I can't tell them all. I'am not gud at English :v Viet Nam

    Putting it simply, the Vietnamese just wanted their country's independence and integrity, and to be left alone, if not FRIEND TO EVERYONE. ALL ELSE IS NEGOTIABLE. # They'd go to any length, endure any sacrifice, hardship, suffering, ... for their country's independence and integrity. =================== Jay Lu says "The mongol couldn't conquer vietnam. The chinese has tried on and off for thousands of years. The french failed. The japanese failed. What makes you think the US had a chance?" -- I say: # Very well said, Jay Lu; especially when China is right next door, and 20 times the size of Vietnam. If the expansionist, boundlessly greedy, ruthless, extremely cunning, brutal and experienced rulers of China could not conquer Vietnam despite repeated attempts, what makes anyone think the US could ? =================== Hitoro Mitori ひとろ みとり says "The war is over but Vietnam still suffered to birth defects" -- I say # That's correct. That CRIME against Humanity by US Government is still not yet punished; and no remorse or apology has been expressed.
