Vietnam War Hero Sgt. Maj. John Canley to be Awarded Medal of Honor
Sgt. Maj. John Canley will become the 300th Marine to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
President Donald J. Trump called Canley July 9 to share the news and congratulate him.
As a gunnery sergeant during the Vietnam War, Canley took command of 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, after his company commander was wounded during the Battle of Hue City. He led his Marines while saving lives and eliminating enemy threats over several days.
He was originally awarded a Navy Cross for his actions. It is being upgraded to a Medal of Honor.

They were ALL heroes! They all fought and many gave their lives, limbs and a normal life to keep us free! I have never heard anyone speculate what would have been the results if the free world, primarily us, had not stopped the Viet Cong! Would they just have just stopped in Vietnam, or would their conquering Vietnam just given them enough the freedom to keep going as long as they could, taking over other countries until??? When would they have stopped? Fortunately for the world, we'll never know because these men fought , and won at a great price and at least for a while the world was relatively peaceful!
