Medal of Honor Recipient Sgt. Maj. John Canley

“It was an honor to be your leader, you made my job easy.”
Yesterday, Sgt. Maj. John Canley became the 300th Marine to receive the Medal of Honor. His Marines to this day remember his selfless actions that kept them alive in combat.

    I served in the Army combat engineers but to my Marine friends, and that means all of you, I say a hearty "Semper Fi." And to Sgt. Major John Canley, I say "Congratulations. You are a true American hero."

    My dad served with these guys in Alpha 1/1 2nd platoon. His name was Jerry McFarland but he went by Mac. He passed away about a month ago. Glad to see they are getting the recognition deserved. Thanks to you all for your service.

    We were 8 miles from Hue when the TET started on January 31, 1968 We knew something big was going on up in Hue but we had no idea 10,000 NVA took over the city. We kept saying, why is it taking 2/5 so long to clear the city? We had two battalions of Marine Artillery at Phu Bai and we kept waiting for orders to support 1/1, 2/5 and 3/5. It never came. Only after several days did we send one of our 155 up to support the Marines. We could of saved a lot of Marines lives. Semper Fi Brothers.

I'm glad to see these true American heroes finally getting some recognition. They all deserve to be remembered as true American heroes, yourself included.     @@JimXultra if your dad served with Alpha 1/1 during the TET Offensive he must have known sergeant Alfredo Gonzalez who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. May your dad Rest in Peace. Semper Fi. You can google Alfredo Gonzalez to read about his actions in Vietnam

    A War had divided America and forgot American Heros. Furthermore, the rewards for a hero soldier has been so long forgotten. A soldier had defined for his actions in the battle of Huế -1968. Apparently, John Canley is a true hero and he deserves recognition. However, still have many American soldiers heroes of the Vietnam War, need recognition and deserve to rewards. Congratulations and best wishes to John Canley.

    I can’t even begin to comprehend this kind of courage. How can we not honor them? How do we forget them and their sacrifices and burn down cities and chant Death to America? When we should be having parades for Heroes like this? Help me understand. Meanwhile....Thank You. Semper Fi

    Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country. In either event, it is unpatriotic not to tell the truth, whether about the president or anyone else.

    I had to be strong holding back my tears..Im disabled now.I wish I could stop my drinking.Sometimes it's the only way I can go sleep...And when I do I still have haunting nightmares.I love the women I've loved.And I'm SO GD SORRY ABOUT waking them up hitting them cursing and behind my past I've lost.I know deep in my heart, they still have love for me.But.I don't blame them.I don't.At most I have a son."THANK YOU GOD ALMIGHTY."     I remember being ordered to see sergeant major at camp Schwab in 1972 a really gracious man really nice, but as we got into the correction and Direction part of the conversation took more of a marine get it right, and that's when I realized this man is different even though he had that grandfatherly aura I knew he was dangerous... that's my brush with MARINE CORP GREATNESS!

    Not really. My only real concern is does the person deserve the award. The standards for a Marine to receive one of the so-called valor awards, Silver Star, Service Cross and MOH, has always been high and remain so. The stories of members of the other branches getting undeserved medals including Purple Hearts is annoying. My pet peeve is when they call it the CMH. I was in Vietnam at the same time. The closest I got to an award was a slap on the back and a hearty "atta boy". At least no one died in my squad although half of them got PHs. Semper Fi and a Well Done SgtMaj.
