I’m the same way with the lock washers. I don’t use them because they don’t work, you never see a lock washer on a head bolt or a rod bolt or a main bolt. Flat washes are OK providing that you use a hard washer on a hard bolt, not a cut washer. I probably would’ve locked tightened the winch on, just to slow down the Tweaker that might steal it . Boats have a flying bridge. That trailer has a flying toolbox.👍

Good thinking on the toolbox location. That original 48”inch height he was thinking was going to be way to high, he would’ve hated trying to get in that. But he would have never known without mocking it up like you did.

I keep looking at that thumbnail and noodling on it. Gotta ask, if we're mounting the toolbox forward of the trailer deck over the tongue triangle, is it no longer essential to be above a car hood height? Please help me understand the advantage of it being way up in the air. Thank you for all you do to teach all of us!

It has to be high enough to give you enough clearance to operate the jack which means it's gonna be too high to access from the ground...once ground access is abandoned the next thing is to set it at a height comfortable to be accessed from standing on the trailer deck, so that's the height it ended up at...it ended up at a height high enough to provide clearance to crank the jack handle and access from standing on the trailer deck

With that style trailet, would you pull a vehicle far enough forward to use the front rail of the trailer as a wheel stop? Great work, and again, for walking us through your design process.

You could but with most vehicles pulling that far forward would be too far forward to be loaded correctly

A tall toolbox looks weird to me, but if that’s what the customer wants, that’s what they get

Moving that far forward. What that do to the turnin radi, will tool box hit the tow vehicle. Truck box as yours, van or big box truck. I'm just thinkin here, learn something every day

I’m not quite sure I understand what Paul is looking to store in a trailer box that large. Ratchet straps and axle straps ain’t that heavy…….🤔. Even if there is an actual need for that much storage, that style of box is a poor choice. CB needing to stand on the front rail to reach into the center of the box pretty much tells the tale…..imagine having to do that on a wet or icy day/night….. and the twin doors mandate the need to move yourself from one side to the other just to retrieve whatever is in that side of the box. Personally, I’m a fan of saddle bag style boxes. A pair of 40mm ammo cans, mounted the same way that spare tire, is what I’m fixing to do on one of my trailers. But one or two custom built long and low boxes will hold a bunch of stuff and is way more accessible. Another benefit is that it uses that otherwise “lost space”. 🫡
