The first woman seems like a real sweetheart. I think the second could be easily miss understood. It's not uncommon for parents to leave home. Their sense of family is strong for most and it seems that way for her. Some of the most loving and strongest family units I've witnessed is from my best friend and her family in the Philippines. Half her siblings were raised there and she came to the states with her mom and dad and brother when she was young. They're all very close and see each other often now. And Shaun seems like a sweetheart.

Unless the child holds a British passport or hes legally on the birth certificate as his dad then he won't get nothing for the child until he's given stay (uk laws) as the stated they were on a tourist visa and even to get basic child benefit he has to prove hes eligible. As for rent, is he works over 16 hours and without the same proof of being a father he won't get anything .

Take the "divorce document" to the Japanese embassy and ask them the legality of it. Really. If you don't trust him on this, walk away. This could be the tip of the iceberg in future.

It might be his English name. They sometimes use another name when around English speaking people. Its so that we are able to say their name. The english name usually sounds similar to their legal name or has the same meaning in Engliah as their legal name

As a foreign woman who lives in Japan... I do not trust Sean...She also needs to know his real name.. If he is 100% Japanese born and raised he should have an official Japanese name written in Kanji and have a koseki (family registry) if she knew his real name she could look up and call and ask about his family registry to see if he was divorced or not. Because if he got married then divorced it would show up at city hall in the family registry... as I said before.. I do not truth this Sean guy.. and the fact he is single now over 40 in Japan is rare... unless he is a workaholic or has some kind of issues that make it hard for him to be married...most people here marry by the time they are late 30s.

Also in Japan yes anyone can divorce anyone without consent. Not just foreigners but also Japanese too. That is why you need a special paper that says you do not wish to be divorced without consent. The reason for this is because once you get married (woman) you join the man's family registry and he can take you off anytime or you can remove yourself anytime. There is a special paper document that makes it hard to divorce without consent.
