Hello Catherine, I think this is my 4th Victober and I love it. I like your suggestion of Children of the New Forest - so that can cover 2 prompts for me too. Orphans and a new to me author. I've just bought a Kindle Delphi edition of the complete works of Frederick Marryat. It has so much in it - including his biography by his daughter Florence Marryat. I also purchased King Solomon's Mines by Rider Haggard. Like you, I'm heading off the beaten track for this Victober. I will look forward to your video on the Pre-Raphaelites.

I love the Gower Street Waterstones. A great selection of books, very excited for Victober!

Sounds like a wonderful TBR! I am reading Orley Farm too! The Trollope Society has all its lectures about it on their website, so I'm going to be watching those too as I read. I'm reading Margaret Oliphant for the first time this Victober too!

A wonderful TBR! 👏🏻 Here's hoping that Orley Farm will do the trick with your Trollope _situation!_ 😉 I'm planning on re-reading The Way We Live Now and I usually re-read The Hound of the Baskervilles but I might choose something different from Conan-Doyle. 🤔I'm also reading David Copperfield and would like to finally read The Five because it's been on my shelf for a couple years. 😬 I'm sure I'll also watch my favorite movie adaptation of The Importance of Being Earnest from 1952, too. Thanks for sharing! 📚

I am drinking Victorian London Fog as I watch! The Children of the New Forest sounds really fascinating--and both Hester and something by Yonge are both on my read-eventually list. And Orley Farms is already on my shelf, still unread... I'm eager to hear what you think of them all!

I have Miss Marjoriebanks by Oliphant as one of my Victober choices, lots of Virago books are on Kindle and you can control the font. I'm going to read The Haunted Hotel toward the end of Victober, plus it is short and free on Kindle. I have too many on my Victober, but if I do not finish in Victober, that's fine. I'm going to read Barchester Towers for Trollope and Ruth for Gaskell. One of my list is a play An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde, which wil only take a short time. Enjoy your Victober, just bought Orley Farm for next year, only 99 cents on Kindle.

Font sizes have become a real issue. Kindle and magnifying bookmarks are my new friends!

That's a wonderful TBR! I've read two (Hester & Orley Farm) and will be very interested to hear about the others, esp. the Charlotte Yonge & Wilkie Collins selections. Hester is good and also concerns class; Orley Farm is fantastic and there is a lot of legal discussion which I enjoyed, and sounds like you will, too! I had a hard time choosing a first-person narrative as well, and decided to re-read Agnes Grey because 1) it's been a while, and 2) it's short ☺ Happy reading!

I'm brand new to Victober this year, and looking forward to hearing about all of these! I'm still very much in the basics phase, planning on The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (shamefully, I have only encountered it as a miniseries), The Return of the Native, and Middlemarch. I'm like the Victorian literature equivalent of an obvious tourist! 😅

This is the first I have heard of this challenge. Maybe challenge isn't the right word. I've been away from book tube for a while. Can't wait to read a couple of Victorian books in October.

I haven't yet read anything by Charlotte Yonge. I think I should make that a goal for next Victober. You are right about class popping up in most Victorian novels. Orley Farm sounds perfect. If you are talking about the Pre-Raphaelites you could read some Christina Rossetti poems that are first person.

I love Orley Farm. I was once told by an attorney that "Orley Farm" was the favorite of lawyers (who seem to be very fond of Trollope in general.

Thank you Catherine, I have decided to read Man and Wife besides a few others for Victober. It’s always great to hear different recommendations 📚🥰

The back cover description for “Orley Farm” made me laugh because it could be a generic description of so very many of Trollope’s novels. I finished “Lady Anna” a few months ago. Class was a major factor in that one as well as marriage and lawyers having to prove the rightful bestowal of an inheritance. It was published about 10 years after Orley Farm and Trollope also commented to his readers that it was the best thing he had written. I disagree. Unlike the other Trollopes I have read, I had to push myself to finish it. Whether positive or negative, I enjoy hearing comments about Trollope and his writing. Your enthusiasm for his work is appreciated. Happy Victober🍁🍂🍁🍂📚

Hester and Orley Farm were both 5 star reads for me. So I hope you'll love them ❤ The last Wilkie Collins I read, The Law and the Lady was rather annoying to me, but I'm willing to give Wilkie Collins another try...eventually. I also own The Clever Woman of the Family and want to read it. Who knows, maybe I'll start it this Victober. 😅

I also like Wilkie Collins. "Armadale" is a favorite. How could you not like a book with a character named Lydia Gwilt?

Hester is on my tbr as well. I'm also planning to read Trollope's The Way We Live Now, David Copperfield by Charles Dickens and A Prince of Swindlers by Guy Newell Boothby. Very much looking forward to the video about the Pre-Raphaelites!

I believe this is my fourth Victober, and I’m so looking forward to it. I’ll be reading the group read, which also counts as my first Trollope and I’m also excited for that. I also want to do a reread of The Picture of Dorian Gray, which was one of the books I read my first Victober. If I have time, I also want to read Far From the Madding Crowd. Have a great weekend💕
