Hello, new subscriber here. I just learned about Victober yesterday and I'm absolutely on board. I'll be reading two novellas by George MacDonald, Phantastes and Lilith. I love Victorian novels -- and poetry. I love Vanity Fair and Barry Lyndon (Thackeray), Middlemarch, and Wives and Daughters and Sylvia's Lovers by Elizabeth Gaskell. And many, many more! So happy to have found your channel!😊

Greetings from South Africa. Thanks for a great post! I've just subscribed.! Thomas Hardy's '"Jude the Obscure" is not too bad, since you mention some of his stuff. I'm going to read "Tess of the D'Urbavilles" sometime soon. I've recently dived into "Victoriana", and believe me, it sharpened my reading skills (I'm 66, so perhaps a bit belatedly😃) I've done " The Mill on the Floss" by George Elliot, so I'm not too daunted in tackling "Middlemarch" soon.

Yes, yes, yes, yes… Doing VicTober! Hooray! Favourite piece of Victorian literature, my whole life: Jane Eyre. I might listen to that on audio just for fun this year and I guess it ticks off the first person account category. I feel very very Gothic this year… LOL. I’ve already begun VicTober as well - for the same reasons as you - I want it to last longer because I’m slow! LOL. So last year and this year I’m starting in September and I’ve begun the group read and I’ve already finished the hound of the Baskervilles, which will tick off the first box again- the first person account category. That’s obviously going to be the easiest category! LOL. I have a TBR of 14 books… Yikes. Maybe I’d better extend it until January ha ha! I do like to read Dickens in December and wish they would have Dicksember - a whole month of just Dickens around Christmas time - perfect! Fun times.

I loved Agnes Grey so much I asked on Goodreads if anyone wanted to do a group read and I was surprised how many do. We are doing that in Victober and then I am reading Silas Marner for sure and then I don't know. There are so many I have been wanting to read and never seem to get to. Some of my choices are: The Diary of a Nobody, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or something else by Robert Louis Stevenson, something by Hardy and Collins are always on my list, and Oliver Twist has been on TBR for years and it always gets pushed off. I am not going to worry too much about prompts this year because in previous years what I wanted to read got pushed off because I was worried about prompts. If I fill them great if not, it is okay. Trollope would be a new to me author this year but again I don't feel like it and it wasn't on my radar for Vic. this year. I will read him in the future. Of course, my only frame of reference was the film Oliver! which came out when I was 8 or 9 years old. Mark Lester was my first crush! 😂 I love The Way We Live Now and am hoping to give it a re-read. 📚 Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest is also a favorite and Victober is the perfect time to re-watch the movie from 1952 (which includes the hilarious Margaret Rutherford, who plays a different kind of Miss Marple in 3 or 4 movies; enjoyable, but NOT Joan Hickson who I adore...but I digress....). 😆 Thanks for sharing. ❤️

Mitzi, I have a question I want to ask you. First of all, I am very excited about Victober! This is my first year participating. I am planning to read Dracula, Wuthering Heights, and The Hound of Baskervilles. I am currently reading Jane Eyre. There is so many I want to read though! I didn’t know Charles Spurgeon was a Victorian preacher. Here’s my question, do you think his theology had an impact on the stories/views at that time. Particularly, Reformed theology. For example, the religious tones in Jane Eyre? I am thinking of some of the religious abuse used against her to make her feel guilty, or that God was mad at her and if she didn’t act better she would go to hell. I am very curious of your thoughts on this. I have a lot I am trying to work out in my mind about Calvinism and the impact on Christians. Oh, and I loved hearing your singing this morning in the intro. It just brightened my morning! 🥰

What a great question!! Last year, I tried to research this! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find anything about it so I'll continue my search this year. Have you read the Brontes? It's a biography about their family and I found that her religious upbringing made all the difference in her writing and, of. course, the society itself. It's a wonderful book if you get a chance to read it. I also found Charles Dickens nonfiction book he wrote for his children, The Life of Our Lord, interesting. In that, his emphasis is on being good. I've also been looking at some of the other writers of this period and their Christian ideas as well. It was such an interesting time with so many ideas and I find that fascinating. Sorry this is so long, but I'm trying to work this out myself!
