Viarco ArtGraf Tailor Shape 12 Set Review - Unboxing, First Impressions, Swatching and Painting!

In today's video I will be reviewing this set of twelve water soluble blocks by the Portugese company Viarco; ArtGraf Tailor Shape. Are they like pencils or crayons? I still haven't decided. One of them is water soluble graphite though! I will be unboxing them, giving my first impressions, and reviewing them in more detail with swatches and a painting in my sketchbook. Let me know if you have used these before, and what you thought of them!
Here is the full 12 set at The Art Shop in Melbourne: theartshop.com.au/artgraf-was...
Some but not many ArtGraf Tailor Shape Products on Amazon (with affiliate links):
AU: amzn.to/3gdy3Cl
US: amzn.to/3GigJqD
Jackson's Art has everything but the 12 set as well!

Apparently magenta and green are new colours, so maybe this full set of 12 will become more common over time....?

My friend Rosi cut peices off her blocks and shared them with me. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed them. They reminded me of inktense blocks and revived my love of that product. I find the tailor chalk shape very intuitive. I have not seen that set you have before but if I ever find a good deal on them I will grab a set!

Imo, they are just a smart marketing trick to make people buy something "new and shiny". They are big and heavy to carry, not practical for use, stain the hand, drawing with them is a pain, and they behave just like watercolor. So what do we gain? 🙂

Thank you! I feel like swatches don't fully show how the supplies work as they usually behave differently again when applied in larger quantities for an artwork. Plus I like to see how the colours interact with each other. And I just like making art! 😂 I hope you try your Tailorshapes out; they're so nice to use. 💜

You do such lovely reviews Beckey! This one did not disappoint, with the great swatches that really represent the lovely colors, to the cute teddy bear painting. I think these artgraf’ s are unique & versatile. The Lazy Redhead takes “out & about” with great affect. Their layerability [?lol] is great. They are so pigmented & generously sized that painting large is a breeze. And that white provides some awesome atmospheric affects in the landscape. Mediums of different formats provide such fun opportunities to expand creatively. I really appreciate Viarco & hope these don’t go away any time soon. [shhh, I’m slow adding back-ups to my stash] Hope you are still enjoying them too…

Lovely painting and paints! Could I ask for a favor? Could you add a bit of white on the black paint and see if you get a blue-gray (rather than a neutral gray)? If yes, then the earth tones + white (bought separately at Jackson's Art that seem to have the best prices on these so far), might make sense. Because it would be like having a Payne's grey, forgoing the need to get the blue (that doesn't quite fit with the earth tones).

  • @BeckyTregear

    @BeckyTregear

    2 жыл бұрын

I tested them out; the black and white make very much a neutral grey (to the cooler side), and I wasn't able to make Payne's grey with them. Mixing blue with the brown made a really good Payne's grey - so yes, in this case the blue is needed. The black doesn't have any blue undertones that I can see. I hope that helps!

Water soluble box of things! Lol. I have to say, ArtGraf makes some interesting stuff. The water soluble graphite is fun but also can create a huge mess (I tried that giant one that looks like a kneaded eraser😂). These look like real chocolates squares and if I put them in a chocolate box I would accidentally try to eat one eventually if I’m being honest. The pigments are so beautiful and deep once activated! And they seem to dissolve the lines so well. I really desperately need those stamps for creating swatch charts as I’m the worst at it lol!

I forgot what I was saying partway through that sentence! 🤣 I am hoping Nick might carve out some wood with divots to fit them into as he reckons he can do that. Then they wouldn't move around everywhere. I keep them with my other watercolours so they don't accidentally get eaten, lol. I have to say those stamps are coming in mighty handy! 😆

I looked it up and it looks like Viarco it's a brand that only sells Many art supplies and has these aquarelas in form of stick and that's why they created these aquarela Squares which are pressed pigment. They started inspired in Tailor's pencil which is a type of pencil you use with clothing so it doesn't stain the cloth, I only knew about the pencil because it's common here but they sell many pigments like these aquarela Squares and are specialized in graphite molding paste which you can mold to draw thinner or larger as you wish. They do not have pigment information but they are ecologically safe and help many causes. Here they're also expensive but art materials usually are in PT. I hope it helps a bit :) their page has lots of other supplies and it has International distribution which covers Australia so there's that xD they're everywhere.

Being Australian, you may not find them at Blick, but Holbein also have some amazing metallic gouache. The Irodori sets I bought have Gold, Antique Gold and Silver - hopefully they are sold as singles. These are great fun to paint with but, rather than using them like pans, I Frau with them then wet the marks afterwards, never knowing what to expect. Two tips when painting this way: - keep the initial marks light as there's a lot more colour in there than you think - if you're using multiple colours, best to wet them with little dabs rather than big strokes. If you do a big stroke through multiple colours expecting them to mix on the paper you'll be disappointed: you must end up with the colour at the start of the stroke completely hiding everything else. There's a video of me on the wetting stage at kzread.info/dash/bejne/fGt21NCgkbnRn7Q.htmlfeature=shared that I hope will convince people to try out this crazy new medium.

I see this as a marketing trick to get people buy something just for the sake that it's something new and shiny on the market. Just by the review videos I can tell, using these are not practical, not comfortable. They stain the hand if you want to draw with them. They are heavy and big, so a small watercolor set with the same colors are much more practical than carrying these around. They behave just like watercolor, so what do we gain? The graphite ones are very limiting, you cannot lift them, using payne's grey or neutral tint watercolor for sketching value studies seems much more practical and giving the same look as a result. Even using Staedtler Mars Lumograph water soluble pencils will give the same result and they are more practical to use and carry around. It's a smart marketing idea, nothing new.

Weirdly enough, for all of their perceived and valid flaws, I still actually really love these. From what I've used of them, they are much more opaque than watercolour so I'd liken them more to gouache. Probably stick form would be a little more practical but I've always had a fascination for tailor chalks so I like the shape of these. Messy, cumbersome, and weirdly awesome. But yes, a very boutique item, one which I think is very much love or hate. I love 'em, haha!
