VetsOnCall - Dr. Pete Ostrum ultrasounds cows

One of Dr. Pete Ostrum's most important procedures is pregnancy tests on his clients' cows, which he performs in this Vets On Call series video. Here, Dr. Ostrum and a colleague work together to check pregnancy in cows on a large family farm of 4,000 dairy cows and 9,000 animals overall.

Technology plays an important role in the exams, the same technology used on human moms. Dr. Ostrum uses ultrasound of the uterus, allowing him to gather more information about the health of the unborn calves than when he uses just his hand. Vets typically check pregnancy by inserting their arm into the cow's rectum next to the uterus, wearing a protective, arm-length plastic sleeve.

Dairy cows usually give birth every 12-13 months and are milking for about 305 days.

One of the family members who owns the farm is Dr. Lindsey Peck, who also works as a veterinarian colleague in Dr. Ostrum's clinic in upstate New York.

With all his clients, Dr. Ostrum says the main priority is the health and well-being of their animals, explaining, "A happy, healthy cow translates to a good product, a safe product in the supermarket."

A number of KZread users have commented correctly that Dr. Ostrum as a child played "Charlie" in the classic film Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. As a young man he transitioned from "candy man" to "milk man" to become a successful dairy cow vet.

"By participating in this project, I hope to draw the public's attention to the hard-working men and women who own and operate our country's family farms," says Dr. Ostrum. "Food safety and animal welfare issues are top priorities for both veterinarians and dairy producers alike."

He's quite likely the only veterinarian in the world who has a Funko Pop figurine of himself.

Yes he was a great actor and probably would still be one today but I'm really happy he went after his dreams. He seems like an excellent Vet and in our world we can always use really good vets to help insure the animals we depend on so much. I've learned a lot from watching these videos. He's an even bigger hero to me now.

Mandy D. He’s doing what he loves. I’m sure he enjoys being in this program and being asked questions he’s trained for, than surrounded by idiots asking him the same old things that he hasn’t done since he was 13 and thinking of him as Charlie

I raised on a small dairy farm in SD. We had mostly Holsteins but also had a Gurnsey and a Brown Swiss. We named every one of our ladies. Before building a dairy, we had a milk cow named Sally. She was sweet and gentle most days, but just like a person, she had bad days and could be temperamental. I got kicked more times than I can count growing up on a dairy. It teaches you to get back up and move on though. Small operation dairies went under in the '80s when milk prices plummeted and the cost of feed sky-rocketed. Dad had to sell out.

What's amazing is the emphasis on "family"... Yet - All these mother cows --- How many of their babies and "family" were they allowed to nurture and nourish??? Ooops! Forgot about that... Their milk is reserved for "humans" only. My bad.

They're so beautiful and sweet and we do this to them :( Treat them as we would want to be treated? Surely we don't want to be regarded as "property" for someone else to own, confine, impregnate, mutilate, control, dominate, and kill for others' unnecessary pleasure? I have a child and if someone stole her from me so that they could use me as a milk machine I would feel devastated and extremely violated. I would want people to leave me alone and respect my rights as a someone, not a something, so I treat animals the same way. I would also want people to speak up for me if people were violating my rights, so I speak out for them. This is NOT okay!

So I can’t kill an insect that bite me? Let mice spread germs? Don’t kill maggots?
