“Anyone who has ever looked into the glazed eyes of a soldier dying on the battlefield will think hard before starting a war.” - Otto von Bismarck

Wouter IJzerman kind of ironic considering he started alot of wars to "unify Germany" and contributed to the Militarism and Nationalism, a major cause of WWI, which led to a chain reaction of wars.

Exactly! It's one of the reasons why this particular quote always stuck with me, since it is such a strong contrast to the quote that Bismarck is probably best known for, 'Blood and Iron'.

That probably wasn't the real question if i'm picking up on context clues right. I'm pretty sure watching your friends arm fly towards you 60 miles an hour as a IED takes out half of your squadron is a bit harder than coming back and not knowing what job to get.

One thing I miss about the Army is that we we're a group of people from all over the country, some from other countries, of different races, religions, beliefs, backgrounds, political beliefs, etc but we all got along, became friends and would do anything for each other. In the civilian world if you like someone that someone else doesn't like that pretty much means you two won't get along. If you voted for someone that person doesn't like that means you two can't be friends. It doesn't make sense, we as humans have so much in common yet we let little things separate us and keep us from bonding with one another. If we would just let go of all the petty stuff the world would be a much better place. Civilians could learn a lot from the military.

My grandfather fought in Vietnam and is still suffering from PTSD and gets nightmares. He's a great man, but Vietnam was horrible for him, and some things he saw still choke him up today. He saw his friends die in front of him and he couldn't do anything to change it. That's one of the hardest parts of war. He was also blasted off of a train there and it screwed up his back. He fought in the Korean war, and was proud when he came back. He felt like he knew exactly what he was fighting for and felt it was justified. When he got back from Vietnam, people would curse at him, spit on him, and say horrible things. At that time, he was already feeling beat down by the world around him, and to come back home and have people calling him a traitor, a horrible person and other terrible names. It's fucked up. You only understand the full extent of war after you've been through it, and the people back home have no clue what was really happening. Even if the war is constantly televised, you are still oblivious to 99% of what's going on. War is horrible, and these politicians who've never even touched a gun in their lives, let alone be forced to kill, just keep on starting wars. It's expensive and pointless, and just showing the rest of us that humans are still dumb, Primitive Creatures, regardless of all of our achievements, if we are still killing each other, we haven't really gone anywhere.

The blatant disrespect towards vets in today's America is absolutely appalling. To hear stories like these- from men and women willing to sacrifice their life for this country- and think about them finally coming home and being viewed as the enemy by so many here... It's just heartbreaking. Major respect to all who serve/served. It takes so much selflessness to do what they do.

knine1833 but again, just because the group is strong doesn't give people an excuse to be disrespectful... we have vets in the family, and they are some of the most caring, honest, loyal human beings I've had the privilege of knowing... and thinking about them having to put up with hate for doing a job is not ok in my opinion. Respect may be something you can live without, but it should still be given to those who earn it.

The truth is, if a service member goes homeless, it’s from a direct lack of action. The education benefits given to us allow us to build a safety net for when we get out. If someone didn’t take advantage of those opportunities, it’s their fault.

Communication between veterans is key. I am a veteran from the Iraqi Freedom days and I didn't even believe I had PTSD until I had kids and I started falling apart in front of my family. We need to stick together. We can survive together. Find a veterans center near where you are. It makes all the difference.

As a Veteran, I can completely understand their difficulty in transitioning. You go from doing what needs to be done, either leading or being led with so much camaraderie to civilians way of living...each one for themselves...thankfully my children understood me and had the compassion to always be there for me - I thought I was the one leading them but as they grew up, I realized just how much they saved me.

As a veteran, although I never got to make that venture to the "sandbox" I did get to see the world that exists outside America. After spending 3 years in a foreign country with only my Army family to lean on coming back I felt disconnected from not just my community but America as a whole. I've secretly struggled with depression because I physically can't cut it as a soldier anymore and I regret not going to war like alot of my friends. I feel this despite many vets and my former NCOs telling me that I was blessed to be spared from it. I never realized how serious the recruiters were when they told us that once you make that choice and see it through you're never the same. To all my fellow vets we are still the last line of defense for our brothers and sisters in arms for when they struggle in service and for when its time for that service to end. To all the civilians that truly care about service members thank you because showing your respect and care makes everything we go through so much more worth it and can reverse the negatives we feel after service.

Having been overseas... I understand them completely. To remember those moments is very difficult. The brotherhood created is unbreakable. I come from a military background...my dad served, my uncles served, my brother served 26 yrs. For the ones who have never put the uniform on and worn those boots and walked the path not many can choose, is when it will be understood. We will live through the daily pain, and memories of friends lost in combat, and try to live a some what normal life the best we can. To all my fellow members of the armed forces, serving, veterans, retirees, and fallen....stay strong and remember we are all here for each other. Hooah!

This so unbelievably sad. I have a cousin who was in the Vietnam War and he shared some aad stpries with me and how much he still suffers with depression now. Also he shared stories of things that were said and done to him when he came home. I feel those soldiers (where so many were forced to go to war) were treated soooo horribly when they came home!

This hits home. My ex husband was a Combat Medic. 17 years in the Army. We had a beautiful little girl. Then His personality changed after his 5th deployment. We ended up divorcing. A year later he was diagnosed with PTSD and Traumatic Brain injury. Less than a year after he retired he took his own life. That was March 2017. I have so much respect for our veterans ❤️

steven Srn I cannot say this with 100% cerrainity, but I know some people who dislike these kind of videos not because they actually don't have respect for veterans. But because they feel like others profit from their stories, I don't agree with it since openness and sharing is so important.

No Steven, they don't sacrifice their blood, sweat and tears so we can have a good life. They believe they are, but unfortunately, they're being lied to and duped as well!! They sacrifice their blood, sweat and tears for Israel, and the federal reserve for murder and war profiteering, and ALL wars started under blatant, intentional lies. I support our troops... they're victims of this satanic dishonest kabal too. I do not support these wars.
