I served in the Army for 10 years. And I feel like the biggest threat to a service members mental and emotional stability has to do with identity. At the beginning of your training, the objective of the Army was to teach you how to be a Soldier. In the process, you change a little and your mind has been altered to understand that you are one with the other Soldiers you fight with and that you should follow orders unless they are immoral. As Soldiers continue to serve, they lose some of their individuality and become a part of the collective. The problem is that many Soldiers don’t have an identity outside of the uniform. They no longer know who they are because who they are is A Soldier. We all know that it’s true because we can see a soldier in public places wearing civilian clothes and instantly recognize them as a Soldier. There is a look, a way in which we interact with others and move through society. For me, this was all a positive thing. But I was also VERY CONSCIOUS and aware that I had to fight for my individuality. Being a Soldier is what I do; NOT the only thing that defines who I am.

that's really interesting. I don't have first hand experience but I'm a spouse and can already see how jarring reintegrating into civilian life will be for my partner when we move back to the US. I'm sure that the veteran suicide rate is heavily impacted by going from that group identity with a set of rules for interacting, to "losing purpose" suddenly when you're no longer wearing that uniform or under the unique stressors of that job. I'm glad it turned out okay for you :)

Sammi J. Yes, you hit the nail on the head. Once people leave the Army, some feel they have also lost their identity. Therefore integrating back into a society where they feel like they are incomplete is difficult and for some, it’s impossible. They feel worthless without the Army, so they decide to end it all. During my entire time as a Soldier, I maintain my individuality and my sense of self. And I must say, that this maintenance of my self was celebrated in the Army and attributed to my success. I wish the best for you and your spouse.

Now if the protest became violent or that person went out of their way to obstruct anyone else from being able to observe the National Anthem, then it would be a problem. Also if it's something along the lines as burning or walking all over the US flag, then yeah I think that's disrespectful and said people should face consequences.

I have seen about 4-5 episodes, many I didn't like, but never hated. This is by far the most eye opening, transformative, and tear jerking. I love what you all do, i think that there are different ways to ask questions that would be less devisive(not sure that I spelled that correctly as I hate the skynet control over our society). Keep it up, and thank you

Good One!! Loved this episode, it widened my perspective, you picked some awesome candidates! I like the respect and different points of view. I am a VFW myself and never sought any support from the VA, yet I am also a retired LEO and I have more PTSD from that yet there is nowhere to go for Firemen, EMS, Trauma Staff, or Cops... so the Army guy kinda hit the nail on the head for me.
