Verdun was a massacre. Both on the french and the german side. There were 300 days and 300 nights of combat without a break, 300,000 dead and missing, 400,000 French and German wounded. The pastoral landscape surrounding the city had been permanently transformed, and nine villages-Beaumont, Bezonvaux, Cumières, Douaumont, Fleury, Haumont, Louvemont, Ornes, and Vaux-were entirely destroyed. Douaumont Ossuary, a monument completed in 1932 that contains the remains of 150,000 unidentified French and German soldiers. n the 21st century the French Interior Ministry estimated that over 10 million shells remained in the soil around Verdun, and bomb-clearing units continued to remove some 40 tons of unexploded munitions from the area annually.

Sabaton 40-1 (Woodstock Poland) a song of the battle of Wizna, in front of over half a million people in Poland. (Battle of Wizna was a battle lasting 3 days, when 700 Poles fought off 42,000 Nazis, including over 350 tanks in WW2.) The crowd is huge, and goes nuts, the song is epic, and Wizna should be marked and remembered.

Verdun was one of the places my grandfather took the heavy guns. Being RA, he, and his team of horses, served pretty much every hell hole on the western front.

Sabaton are an excellent band and they have their own history channel starring the band members and Indy neidell - american historian who's done his own series' in the past. Iron Maiden (named after a british regiment) also in their songs bring history to life, 5FDP also pay respects to the american military (wrong side of heaven is an amazing song).

You pronounced it correctly the 1st time and if you're curious what it means a sabaton is the bit of articulated armor that would go over the shoes of someone in a full set of plate armor. "To hell and back", "Cliffs of Gallipoli" and "The price of a mile" would be some other good ones for a veteran to react to
