I wish I could like this more than once.

Im Swedish and this song hits hard. It is about the thirty years war from a Swedish soldier's point of view. But its applicable to any time, any war. Easily my favourite Sabaton song.

True words. If still people think WWII with this amount of deaths was devastating, the "30 year war" was much, much more devastating to so many countries in Europe than the black death before. Germany, the kingdoms, needed nearly one century to recover population wise and structural. No war is good for anything and anyone but for war profiteers only. That's a great recommendation by Sabaton!

Indeed, all of us who have served understand the sacrifice of those we left behind. The difference was that we had a choice, this is about fighting for your own. We kinda did that at one point on the border but we shut that down really, really fast, in a matter of hours (we count the Baltic states and Finland as our people).

I live in the US, and I'm 70. I don't know this band, or where they are from or where they are playing. I do know that I have never seen an audience so in tune with a band. The way they started out singing so LOUD and in sync with the band! I was also moved, being a veteran, though not as much as Andrei! I fell in love with your channel when I watched your reaction to the phenomenon of Aurora. You are both just delightful!

The band is from Sweden and this perticular concert takes place at Scandinavium in Gothenburg, Sweden. They do songs primarily about military history and also has a compendium channel where people can learn more about the history behind their songs. The band is Sabaton. They are from Sweden, Northern Europe. They play heavy metal, with many different labels which nobody can agree with. They usually sing in English, and they always tell historically correct stories in their songs, mainly about war. They even have a youtube channel where they tell the stories about what inspired their songs. World War 2 has gotten a lot of attention, but also other historical wars. They do not glorify war in any way, and the person who claims they do should listen to "The Price of a mile". They released an album which was called Carolus Rex, which is about the Swedish empire. They released two version, one in Swedish and one in English. They are not the same, not literally translated. They tell different stories. I do recommend warmly to check them out. You won't regret it.

I saw a comment on another video from someone who said they were at that show in the video, and they said that when Sabaton has a tour in Sweden that has shows in both Stockholm and Gothenburg (where this performance was filmed), the band has a "sing-off" of sorts to see which city sings this song the loudest.

That is roughly 12000 swedes singing their hearts out,and as a swede this one has me tearing up every single time. As you probably know now this is about the 30 year war. And back then alot of people followed along in the armies footsteps,people in charge of food,supplies etc. And ofc there would be kids that were born following the army who eventully grew up and became soldiers them self and in most cases died in the army too. Hence A life time of War. Love your reactions guys,keep going with Sabaton!

Sabaton sang two versions of this song. The Swedish version in this video is from the perspective of one soldier. The English version, which has the title Lifetime of war, is from the point of view of the entire army. It's practically one song, but two lyrics.

In short, English version is the World looking in at the war and the Swedish version is the solider in the war looking out at the world.

This is about the 30 years war in the 17th century. Most of Northern and Western Europe was so depleted by the end that they where sending children to fight. Many of them had lived their entire lives during wartime, hence the title. Great job guys, I loved this!

Those tears are from a man who could picture himself in their shoes. I do also cry when I listen to these lyrics. This was a horrible war were you began and ended your life in the conflict. Thank you for your reaction and your humanity.

This happens every time they perform that song in Sweden. I've been in the audience singing along too and it's an incredibly powerful experience to be part of. Can absolutely confirm that half the audience is moved the same way by this song. Not many a dry eye during the performance.

I suspected that you would love the song, most of us do! For me...who was in that crowd on the left, it marked me forever and I will never forget it. Please don't be ashamed over shedding some tears, if this song doesn't get you emotional, there is something wrong with you! Sabaton is really good with making you feel proud and that pride doesn't stop with your own country, but directly transfers to other countries too. Well we will eventually run out of sad songs but we ain't there yet! The Price of a Mile, The Final solution, Cliffs of Gallipoli, Angels Calling, Soldier of Heaven and To Hell and back for more polish history related songs 40:1, Inmate 4859 and The Winged Hussars. While not even mentioning half of the total songs worthy of a listening. Do also note that the whole Carolus rex album has songs both in Swedish and English with alternative lyrics often shifting in perspective between the languagues.

First Rammstein, and now Sabaton, this is a great day!

Since the lyrics are a bit hit and miss with the captions, I'm reposting my translation I put under the original video here as well. It should give a more accurate sense of what they are singing. Although, at the same time, Dominika said it beautifully int he reaction: "The song can still touch you even when you don't understand the lyrics, because you are listening with your heart not your brain." Beautifully said. :) I know some people have already posted translated lyrics. I'll try to offer some with more sense for meaning than the direct translation can offer. Hopefully it will be useful. :) I'll add (some text within parenthesis), for things that the swedish lyrics imply, but does not actually spell out and _(some annotations in italics where I think an elaboration or explanation is warranted)_ I look back and see my home disappear (in the distance) My time at home now feels way too short Merely (a) youth, barely a man when duty called me I don't know if I get to see my home again _(the swedish version is backwards to this; 'If I get to see my home again, I know not', a more archaic way of speaking)_ Among (friends and family) of my village I went to battle _('fränder' is an archaic swedish word encompassing both friends and family, with the friends implied to be as close as family)_ And the world (was) burning Because the war can _('Kriget' translates as 'the war', 'krig' is 'war'. Swedish uses ending suffixes instead of the prefixes usually used in english to distinguish general from specific)_ Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland _('Fosterland' technically means 'land of my birth', but the modern meaning is homeland)_ But who (will) miss me So see me as A husband, a friend (A) father, (a) son, who never will come home But who (will) mourn me? _(Here I would say 'den' should be omitted for the english translation. The literal translation would be 'it', a more contextual translation would be 'one', as in "So see me as one - a husband, a friend". However, in practical terms 'den' is just used to make the lyrics rhyme in swedish and can be omitted without any meaning getting lost.)_ (I) Went into battle for Sweden, (and) was baptized in blood Out there death awaits, not bravery _(bit tricky here 'hjältemod' is closer to 'bravery' or 'heroic bravery'. Heroics would be 'hjältedåd' or 'heroic deeds')_ In the field where friends and family fall, no song is heard _(military term, 'i fält'/'in the field' means not in the barracks/home base, not always a literal field of grass or battlefield)_ (We) go out (into battle) against the odds, one more time _(Tricky last line. Literally it's "we challenge our destinies, once again" but in swedish to "utmana ödet" implies doing something stupid or foolish, implying that they go out into battle again despite it being a stupid thing to do, implying further that the fighting is hard and/or things are not going very well for them.)_ Far from home _(background chorus):_ (We are) baptized and killed in battle _(Combined with the the line about destiny/odds in the preceding verse, and the far away from home sung by Jocke immediately before, "Döpas och dö i strid" implies that getting baptized in blood and then getting killed is what they can expect, or are expecting. Hence the lyrics of the refrain about how war can destroy a man.)_ And the world (was) burning Because the war can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who (will) miss me So see me as A husband, a friend (A) father, (a) son, who never will come home But who (will) mourn me? And when my time has run out Who will care then? They fight on Will a soldier get a dignified end? _(The literal translation is 'worthy end' but the meaning is 'dignified end')_ (Be) Allowed to fall asleep Fade away And never wake (up) _(The implication here is the soldier questioning if any of them will ever be allowed to die a peaceful death, because the war is raging on with no end in sight.)_ Because the war can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who (will) miss me So see me as A husband, a friend (A) father, (a) son, who never will come home But who (will) mourn me?

Love your reactions. Sabaton is a fantastic and strange band. Strange in that way that no matter where you are from and no matter what they sing about they makes everyone love it. I have seen concerts in both Poland and Germany, one song is 40:1 about the Polish army.. next song is about the German panzer division.. and people seems to love both songs just as much and get touched and even feel proud even if it isn’t about your country.. it might even be old enemies.. but when Sabaton sings… people seems to unite and see it for what it is.. i dividual men and woman often put in a war they have nothing to say about and do their best.. they are just amazing.

This song is about the 30 year war in the perspective of the soldier who fight that war (swedish soldier in this case), you can hear now the english version of the song that have another perspective more general view of the war. This version is so emotional, you dont hear this without cry....

the fact that a swedish band talking about history can amke ppl feel patriotic for countries they are not from, its just amazing (this song made me cry fr)

Honestly it's not even patriotism its empathy with how horrible war is for the soldiers, the song always gets me to tear up because of how sad it is. And the lyrics really applies to basically anyone as well if we overlook the specific Swedish lines, you can change Sweden with other countries and it would not be less fitting.

Hes a man that knows responsibility and knows the way of war even tho he may not have been to a actual war.. Most men do shed a few tears when they hear this song because they know deep down how awful war is but they also know it is needed and they are prepared to brave the awfulness of war for their loved ones and all they hope and want is to be remembered for their sacrificed.

It's insane how a song that depicts the emotional struggles of war literally four hundred years ago has an impact today. Makes you think, doesn't it. In so many ways we're so advanced, but in so many other ways we're not. And the days where Swedes do not have to go into war may not be over. Time will tell, and we will be ready. In the meantime, please enjoy this song and cry as much as you want because this song has me in tears every time.

Chris Rörland is great on guitar! I miss the weekends, when he and Mattias Marklund from Vintersorg came and jammed at my downstairs neighbor and i was invited to drink beer.

This song is about the Thirty Years' War that dominated central Europe in the 17th century (1618-1648). To this day it is one of the longest and bloodiest wars in history, with the death toll falling between 4 million and 8 million. Many of the fatalities were not even from active warfare, but famine and disease also plagued the area, upping the casualties that much more. Casualties reached such a high number that many Swedish men were forced to fight when they had barely reached manhood, and sometimes even before then. Which really makes the title of the song ("A Lifetime of War" in English) hit a little harder. Men basically spent their entire lives at war, no chance for a peaceful life. The was about the battle between Catholics and Protestants, and at some point during the war almost every major player/Country in Europe was a part of it. This Swedish version of the song tells the story from a Swedish soldier's point of view. You should also check out the English version; it is not a direct translation from the Swedish, but it rather tells the story of the war from the perspective of the outside people, those not involved directly in the war but were affected by it. The lyrics hits hard, but it also shows that even when times change, new technology comes, one thing remains constant and that is the horrors of the war, both those who fall in it and those who survive and have to live with nightmare every day (ptsd).

I had been sitting on tickets to see Judas Priest and Sabaton for over a year as the show was cancelled and rescheduled over and over. Finally at the last moment they rescheduled the show again but Sabaton had been replaced as the opening act. As much as I love Priest I wasn't paying to see Queensreich so I exchanged the ticket for a seat at a Jordan Peterson presentation. Hopefully Sabaton will be back here soon.

We still feel the pain of our ancestors to this day. There is a reason we have stayed neutral and out of war for 208 years. Even if we are preparing for war today...

I've done quite a lot of reading around the 30-years war and there are stories from farmsteads where the husband, the uncle, and the oldest son went off to war leaving small children and grandparents to look after the farm. There is one story where the wife is pregnant with a boy who is later on also sent to the army. In the end only the uncle came back missing one leg :/ There was even a time where the church allowed women of nobility to share men because the ratio of men to women were only 2 for every 3 women. And keep in mind that it was even worse outside of Sweden where especially the german states were horrific. Also the deluge in Poland.
