Are you ever nervous before you start a surgery on a pet? Or are you more so excited?

Jisoo Kim good question!!! I'm never really nervous. If it's something I'm not sure will have a good outcome, I prepare the best I can, and then I feel focused and excited. Even in the most dire of circumstances I tend to get more focused and quiet. My techs know when something isn't right because I get quiet and totally engrossed in the moment. That's when they know to pay attention and be ready for my orders. So not really nervous. I just think to myself "I got this. I can do this."

Have just discovered your videos and am really enjoying them - very honest but optomistic. I am in my final year of vet school in NZ - and you are right, physically, emotionally and intellectually draining profession. I am worried about my work-life balance. Have always said I want veterinarian to be my profession and not my life - but already I am coming home each night from a 11 hour day in the clinic studying things I have seen or will see tomorrow. Because I want to know it all and be prepared. I guess it will be like that for a while in the beginning, when I getting my head around the common things we see I can possibly spend less time studying outside of work?

Hi, I'm planning to take Vet. Med. in college, I'm a senior high graduating student. I'm very scared and nervous because I'm emotionally unstable atm and I don't know if I can handle this kind of job in the future. Also, I've been really insecure because I always think I'm the dumbest person in our class and I've watched videos where vet. med. students were having a mental breakdown and all and I am aware it will happen to me as well in college. It's very frustrating. If things get too hard while studying vet. med. I'll roam around the street and hang out with stray cats and dogs to get my motivation back haha. I had so many wonderful pets that died and it hurts everytime because I couldn't do anything and we were kind of broke to send our pets to clinic so I felt horrible. I've always cherished animals that's why I'm forcing myself to look on the positive side but sometimes, negativity eats me and I get very anxious and I doubt myself if I can achieve my plans in life. Sorry for rambling but thank you for making this video.

Same here. I want to be that success story where someone had a terrible gpa and then got their sh*t together and eventually made good enough grades to be accepted into a vet school. I'm already half way there, I've got the terrible gpa now I just need to get my shit together lol

Every day is different? Well on the good side, veterinarians have so much more freedom with their job vs. human medical dr's. You can make decisions far more rapidly. If someone wants a vet specialist, you surely can make a referral. Also, your patients are usually cuter, and well, to be frank about it, dogs and cats smell better than humans, even if the animal is slightly smelly from not having had a bath lately, lol.

Are there certain jobs available where you don't have to perform surgery?

  • @TheBowTieVetGuy

There are! Most internal medicine specialists don't do surgery, and behavior specialists don't either. Many of them still do some procedures, but they don't do surgery. If you wanted to be a vet, but didn't want to do surgery, I'm sure you could find a practice to accommodate you. Thanks for watching!

Everybody's got their own style. It's important to learn what works for you. I found that making new notes (and trying to do it from memory) helped a lot. I also got a lot out of working with others. I did best, though, when I got to clinics. The situational learning really drove it home for me. Good luck!

There are licensing requirements here as everywhere. I would check with the state board where you'd want to practice. In the US each state handles licensing on their own. Which, now that I say it, seems kinda silly, but there you are. You should be able to find those requirements on line by state. Good luck!!
